REPORT OF ART SUPERVISOR

To the Superintendent of Schools and School Committee of Leyden:

At the end of my second year as art supervisor in Union #18, I feel that I can accurately report that much progress has been made in the development of a creative art program in all the schools.

Art is a vital means of expression which contributes to the total growth of all children and which helps make better adjusted and happier children. Few children of our schools now cry, "I can't." They like to experiment.

The art created by these children displayed on corridor and class- room walls has been enjoyed by parents and other interested citizens.

Many teachers have achieved excellent group work-murals, mobiles, and stain glass windows. One class made and handsomely decorated kites which took the wind and sailed. The teachers have done creditable work in correlation with study units.

May I add, that I have found real enjoyment and great satis- faction in my work with the pupils and teachers with whom it has been by privilege to be associated.

Respectfully submitted,

BESSIE MOORE

Art Supervisor

REPORT OF THE MUSIC SUPERVISOR

To the Superintendent of Schools and Leyden School Committee:

The half-way mark having been reached in this school year, I wish to say I am pleased with the results hoped for during the last three terms, while I have been Music Supervisor.

The note reading, both musically and rhythmically, is progress- ing very well. Our square dances and folk dances done periodically are much loved by the children, and teach co-ordination of rhythm and foot work.

Our Christmas concert was very good, and I believe the children enjoyed demonstrating their ability to the parents and friends present.

I hope in the months to come that we will increase our musical knowledge in many new ways.

Respectfully submitted,

DOROTHY W. ECCLES Music Supervisor

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL PHYSICIAN

To the Superintendent of Schools and Leyden School Committee:

It was my privilege this year to examine forty-five pupils of the Elementary School. Most were in good health. Several parents were notified of minor defects.

Respectfully submitted,

WILLIAM R. BUCHANAN, M. D. School Physician

41

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

To the Superintendent of Schools and Leyden School Committee:

In March of 1958, a Mantoux Tuberculin Test was offered to all pupils and school personnel in Leyden. Of pupils, 28 took advantage of the test. The percentage showing reaction was 3.6%. The posi- tive reactors and their contacts were all x-rayed and found to be negative. This is a five year study being done in the Northfield Union with the cooperation of the Franklin County Public Health Association and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

All elementary school children were weighed and height taken. All ears and eyes were tested and defects reported to parents. Dr. Buchanan examined all school children and defects reported to par- ents. A well-child clinic was held at the Town Hall on May 15, 1958, with 26 children examined by Dr. Buchanan.

Respectfully submitted,

BERNICE F. BERRY, R. N.

School Nurse

GEORGE E. HOWES, Collector

Report of Northern Franklin Welfare District

To: Leyden Board of Public Welfare From: L. R. Stark, Agent, Northern Franklin Welfare District

Subject: Annual report on Public Assistance for 1959

During the year 1959 the District Welfare Office at Bernardston continued to administer Public Assistance for Leyden under the di- rection of the Leyden Board of Public Welfare. This work included investigation of applications for assistance, periodical investigations of continuing need, determination of the amount of needs, preparation of payrolls and reports and related matters.

There were no general increases in assistance payments during the year but the cost of medical care continues to rise. The federal participation in Old Age Assistance, Aid to Dependent Children and Disability Assistance remains at $41.50 per month for each case of Old Age Assistance and Disability Assistance and $20.50 per month for each eligible recipient in Aid to Dependent Children. Medical care payments now are being paid directly to the vendors for all types of medical needs.

Total cases being aided was eight at the beginning of 1959 and was down to seven at the end of December.

Total assistance payments were about $2,600 less than in 1958.

OLD AGE ASSISTANCE

Minimum grants remained at $61.50 per month for recipients living with relatives and $81.50 per month for all others without other resources. The highest regular payment during the year was $72.30 per month plus medical needs.

At the beginning of the year six cases were being aided at a cost of $347 per month exclusive of medical needs. At the end of the year there were five on the rolls with a regular monthly payment of $279.

23

Additional payments for medical needs averaged about $370 per month during 1959. Assistance payments were about $2,500 less than last year.

No new applications were received during the year. One case was closed because of death of the recipient.

Five Old Age Assistance real estate liens were in force at the beginning of the year. None were released and no new liens were filed. No recoveries were made.

There were no appeals during the year.

AID TO DEPENDENT CHILDREN

Two cases with five children were being aided at the start of the year at a cost of $145 per month. No new applications were received leaving two cases with four children at the end of the year with a monthly cost also of $145 plus medical needs. Total assistance in this category was slightly less than last year.

DISABILITY ASSISTANCE

No assistance in this category was given during the year. No applications were received.

GENERAL RELIEF

One application was received during the year but was withdrawn. No assistance was given in this category during 1959.
