ART SUPERVISOR
To the Superintendent of Schools:
I began my work as Supervisor of Art for the Northfield Union in September, 1957, and during the four months just passed have visited each class in the primary and elementary schools twice each month. That you may have a clearer picture of what I hope to accomplish, I hereby submit my report.
In my association with the teachers, my aim is to instruct them as follows:
1. Art is a personal creative process, and no two children will produce the same work. Never can a child reproduce the image which is in the mind of the teacher.
2. The art of the child is work created by a child. It is not the work of an adult and therefore should not be judged by adult standards.
47
3. Copying of any kind is not a creative process. It may have its use as "busy work" (but even of this I'm skeptical), or as a craft. Such work should never have a place in the art curri- culum.
In my work with the children, my aim is:
1. To help them to express themselves through art.
2. To show them how they can create naturally out of their own experiences or environment, but not ever to reproduce what they might have seen in a book.
Some teachers have achieved creditable group work in connec- tion with their study units.
May I add that I have found enjoyment and satisfaction in my work with the pupils and teachers with whom it has been my privi- lege to be associated.
Respectfully submitted, BESSIE MOORE
MUSIC SUPERVISOR
To the Superintendent of Schools and citizens of Leyden:
Dear Sir:
The past four months being my first introduction to a new school system, I am very pleased to find the music situation in the schools so good.
The willingness of the children, and the splendid cooperation of the teachers and Superintendent make my position extremely inter- esting.
The combined 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades do excellent work, from rote songs in the 1st to reading accurately, rhythmically and musi- cally in the 2nd and 3rd grades.
The reading is carried on, on a larger scale in grades IV, V, VI, and VII, and they are now able to read and sing correctly two and three part songs.
48
We use rhythmic drills and folk dances to learn the songs of other countries, and rhythm instruments to add color and interest to the songs.
I hope in the future to use records for appreciation, and rhythm instruments for knowledge, interest and fun.
A Christmas program was given in the Town Hall, with Christ- mas carols and playlets relating to the season. I'm certain the par- ents enjoyed it as much as did the children who presented it.
I'm sure we will make even more progress in the school days to come.
Respectfully submitted, DOROTHY W. ECCLES Music Supervisor
SCHOOL PHYSICIAN
Fifty-one children were examined and 12 health notices were issued, all being for dental abnormalties. No serious problems were encountered, and all youngsters seemed to have "weathered" the flu epidemic.
Sincerely, PAUL B. KOEHLER, M. D.
SCHOOL NURSE
All elementary school children have been weighed and height taken. All ears and eyes were tested and any defects were reported to parents. Dr. Koehler examined all school children and defects were reported to parents. On May 7, 1957, a Well Child Conference was held. Dr. Koehler examined 22 pre-school children.

Carpenter's Tavern in Old Leyden Center, built in 1830 immedi- ately after fire had leveled the pioneer Leyden Inn. Auctions and Town Meetings were held in this building. From this spot, Leyden men often set out with ox carts laden with produce for Boston. The primitive telephone poles at extreme left and right of the picture were part of the early Heath Line which served West Leyden and the Center. This photograph, taken about 1898, was contributed by Ellen L. Brown, niece of Leyden's sculptor, H. K. Brown.

Report of Northern Franklin Welfare District
To: Leyden Board of Public Welfare
From: L. R. Stark, Agent, Northern Franklin Welfare District Subject: Annual report on Public Assistance, 1958
During the year 1958 the District Welfare Office in Bernardston continued to administer Public Assistance for Leyden under the di- rection of the Leyden Board of Public Welfare. This work included periodical investigations of continuing need, determination of the amount of needs, preparation of payrolls and reports and related mat- ters.
There were no general increases in assistance payments during the year and no general increases in the cost of medical care. The federal participation in Old Age Assistance, Aid to Dependent Children and Disability Assistance was changed during the year to a much simpler formula and is now $41.50 per month for each case of Old Age Assistance and Disability Assistance and $20.50 per month for each eligible recipient in Aid to Dependent Children. This for- mula gives about the same federal money as was being received by the previous, more complicated formula. Medical care payments now are being paid directly to the vendors for most services except phy- sician's services for which the payments are being made to the recipi- ent of assistance.
Total cases being aided was ten at the beginning of 1958 and was down to eight at the end of December.
Total assistance payments were about $400. less than in 1957.
OLD AGE ASSISTANCE
Minimum grants remained at $61.50 per month for recipients liv- ing with relatives and $81.50 per month for all others without other resources. Depending on the needs of the individual, these grants ranged upward to $125.80 per month plus medical needs.
At the beginning of the year eight cases were being aided at a cost of $471. per month exclusive of medical needs. At the end of the year there were six on the rolls with a regular monthly payment of $347. Additional payments for medical needs averaged about $330. per month during 1958. Assistance payments were about $150. more than last year.
