Among the items of the Treasurer's balance of accounts it appears that at the close of the fiscal year $300.36 of the school appropriations remained in the treasury unappropriated by the school committee. But since then they have distributed $291.41 among the several districts in the town, so as to secure, as far as may be, an equal length of school- ing in each. That sum was reserved by the committee for this pur- pose, and in their discretion has been judiciously expended.
We submit to the consideration of all officers of the town, the necessity of observing faithfully the provisions of the by-laws in rela- tion to keeping full accounts of all money received or expended, and correct records of all transactions. It is made our duty to examine them, and report such suggestions as the interests of the town require. We find that any lack on the part of a board of officers drawing orders or receiving money, to keep their own aceounts properly, produces de- rangement among the accounts of the other officers, and makes them difficult to adjust. This year the Treasurer's accounts and those of the Selectmen have been well kept and proper reports returned ; but those of the Overseers of the Poor have been improperly and loosely kept, producing some imperfections in the Treasurer's report. Orders have been drawn for balances of accounts in some instances, while they are required to return to the Treasurer all moneys received from sales of property and all other sources, and draw orders for all expenditures. They should also keep methodical and full accounts of all their trans- actions, which has been neglected. The effect of any such adjustment of accounts as above named, is to make it impossible to determine accurately the resources of the town, or the standing of its finances at the close of the year, so as to provide properly for the year to come. We suggest the propriety of following the by-laws of the town in this regard strictly:
There was at the close of the last year, $101.61 due to the town from the liquor agency, it being the sum used by a former agent as capital to sustain that department of town affairs, and has since remained in the agent's hands and is still unpaid.
This concludes our report upon the ordinary affairs of the town which annually pass in review before the auditors. But we desire further to subjoin a summary statement of the material aid contributed to the support of the Union cause during the late rebellion, within the limits of this municipality. The public generally desire such informa- ation in form for preservation, and its details can be more readily secured now than later, when its sources are scattered or lost. The following tables exhibit the liabilities of the town for each year since the war began, its military expenses for the various purposes used, and the reimbursements it has received, extending to January 31, 1866, which is the close of the last fiscal year.

There. will be, also, during the coming year, a reimbursement of military aid from the state to the town, the amount of which it is impossible to. estimate at this time, to diminish the balance above.

Below we give a list of those who have served in the federal army as soldiers during the late war, and, so far as is known, their record. It is indeed a "Roll of Honor," to which we shall be hereafter proud to refer as an attestation of the loyalty and devotion of our people to the Union of the States and the cause of republican liberty. There are among them few of rank, but all are of honor, save in one or two instances, and served their country well in all the vicissitudes of the war, and we desire to perpetuate the memory of the fallen and the title of the living braves, by inscribing their names upon our public records as part of our debt of gratitude to them.
