for the brick walk in the town house yard, that for fitting up the Se- lectmen's rooms in the new police station, and that for the use of Ed- wards' hall for the Teacher's Institute. These suggestions are made for the consideration of the people of the town ; but it is not within the province of the Auditors to arrest the payment of such expendi- tures when lawfully contracted by the proper authorities, and thus the town becomes liable therefor.

For the past year, the expenditures have been large, and the taxes, of course, have been heavy, but, so far as is known, no one has suf- fered by reason of the payment of his tax bill. It may be wise for the town to make liberal provision for the support of the public schools and for all desirable public improvements, as well as for its ordinary necessary expenses, but the question may be raised whether it is not time for the town to act with a view to a more strict economy in the management of its affairs.

Respectfully submitted,

S. M. LANE, MANNING LEONARD, Auditors. F. P. PRATT,

SOUTHBRIDGE, Feb. 1, 1873.
