REPORT OF SELECTMEN
To the Citizens of Southbridge :
We herewith submit for your approval a brief report of the activities for the past years. As recorded by the voters at the annual town meeting, we with our Fire Chief pur- chased a Pirsch Aerial truck which was demonstrated in the month of December. We are convinced that it is the best apparatus of its kind made in the United States. The pur- chase of a Ford ambulance was also made by the same com- mittee, and we believe for the price paid it is a credit to our Town.
Now, that the School Departments are out of the Town Hall Building, we are recommending an appropriation for turning these quarters into suitable offices to relieve the congestion now existing in our various departments.
We have requested from the State and County under Chapter 90 the completion of North Woodstock Road in- cluding an over-head bridge at approximately the same lo- cation where the old southern New England railroad bridge was and also the construction of the Dresser Hill Road, leading from Sandersdale bridge to the Charlton town line, which is in a very deplorable condition. As soon as these two stretches are completed, we feel that the eastern outlets of our town will be in a very good condition.
We are pleased to announce that through the effort of the Southbridge Underwriters Association that a reduction of fire rate on town properties was materialized. Rate dropped from 42 cents to 37 cents which will be quite a saving to the town.
Through the efforts of the Board the town now has much better bus accommodation especially in its equipment, change which was needed badly.
18
We strongly urge an appropriation for the construction of a sidewalk with curb and gutter on Worcester street from Henry street to Charlton street and thence over Charl- ton street to the Central street bridge. We believe that the worst hazard that we have in town is right at the Central street bridge, and we believe if accidents are avoided that it will justify our recommendation.
Some needed repairs were made on our Town Hall building, but because of the small appropriation given us at the last annual town meeting we were obliged to put over until 1937 more repairs that should be done, and hope that the voters will allow a greater appropriation at the next town meeting for the preservation of the building.
The Board has decided to make our Main Street from Pleasant Street to Morris Street a through-way but are de- laying to put this order in effect until a complete report will be given us on the traffic research done by the State during the latter part of the year. Along Main Street we have numerous intersections which are very dangerous and by making a through-way with proper stop signs on each and every street, we feel that we might prevent some serious accidents.
We were confronted by a flood last March which neces- sitated an additional appropriation for the Highway De- partment, but as a whole we believe that our town was very fortunate to get by with this appropriation. We wish to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of the town for the splendid co-operation given us during this flood and particularly the manufacturers who went to consid- erable expenses to help the various town departments. They were really the greater sufferers, but were also the most willing to help financially or otherwise.
