REPORT OF SELECTMEN

To the Citizens and Taxpayers of Southbridge :

The year began with about all the complications conceivable but your Selectmen have endeavored to do for the best interest of all, the Board organized with Joseph Lafleche 2nd, chairman, and Julian C. Gabree, clerk, and have held weekly meeings on Mondays.

Inasmuch as there were few jobs to be had the Sol- diers' Relief recipients increased each week, until late in the summer when many of the veterans secured work in the shops and mills, while others found work outside or on road work for the Town, and later these were ab- sorbed in the CW A projects. This work has continued up to December 31, 1933, and at the present time the pay- rolls are small, those being aided are sick or widows with children.

In April the law allowing the sale of 3.2 percent beer and wines was passed by the State and your Selectmen granted licenses and later, in December, when the 18th Amendment was repealed and the State passed other laws, new licenses were issued for all alcoholic bever- ages. We have collected and turned over to the Treas- urer the sum of $19,308.14 for these licenses.

Acting with the Board of Public Welfare, we have made monthly reports of the expenditures in the Soldiers' Relief account to the State Emergency Relief Director in Boston and the Town has been re-imbursed to the amount of $18,779.83. The amounts received before July 1, 1933, along with the license money, were used by the Assessors and materially reduced the tax rate of the year.

-20-

The appropriation for Street Lights was reduced by the Town this year and many lights had to be removed to keep within the sum raised, this has brought about much dissatisfaction and we feel that all lights should be restored in their former locations.

By action of the Town at a special Town meeting held in July, the Selectmen have had Worcester, Charl- ton and Central streets re-surfaced and relocated from Hook Street to the State Road on Worcester Street. This was done under the provisions of Chapter 90 of the Gene- ral Laws with the State and County contributing money, the State $15,000.00, the County $5,000.00 and the Town $10,000.00.

This work was done by day labor and this allowed many men who were receiving aid from the Town to be self-supporting and was a material saving to the Town, we judge about $3,500.00.

Following will be found the reports of the several departments under our care such as Police, Fire, Ac- countant, Etc., and they will show a more detailed ac- count of their work.

We wish at this time to thank the Department heads and the public for their co-operation during the year.

Respectfully submitted, JOSEPH LAFLECHE 2nd., JULIAN C. GABREE, ALFRED J. PELOQUIN,

Selectmen of Southbridge
