This work has been done under the direction of the Gypsy-moth Committee.
Over six hundred dead trees have been cut and sawed up into wood. This work was authorized by the Board of Selectmen. The wood sold and the money turned into the Town.
In Russell Park, the walks across the Park have been straightened, graded and rolled. A catch basin has been built in the center of the Park to take away the surface water and prevent the gravel walks being washed during heavy rains. The hollow places in the center have been filled with loom rolled and reseeded. The grass has been kept cut, papers and other material have not been allowed to accumulate. The Town will be called upon to increase the appro- priation for work to be done in this Park for the ensuing year.
The trees in Meadow Brook Park have been watched carefully and the gypsy and brown-tail moths removed, some filling has been done during the year. When Mystic dam is completed the town will be called upon to spend money in this Park to improve the sanitary conditions.
The triangles on Mystic Street have been cared for and the grass cut from time to time.
A detailed account of money spent for the past year will be found in the town Auditor's report.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES H. GANNETT,
WILLIAM E. LLOYD,
BERT HOUGHTON, Secretary.
REPORT OF TREE WARDEN.
I have the honor to submit my fourth Annual Report as Tree Warden for the year 1906.
Most of Gypsy-moth work on the trees has been done by the Local Superintendent appointed by the town under the supervision of the State Superintendent. Under the able management of the present local Superintendent, Mr. William, H. Bradley, who served for a long period in the Tree Warden's Department, I feel that the expense in caring for this feature of the work should, in the near future, be very materially reduced on the highways.
TREE PLANTING. There have been a number of trees removed in different parts of the Town on account of fixing the grades for side- walks. I should recommend that the sum of two hundred dollars ($200) be appropriated for these and others that may be removed.
TREE TRIMMING. I again call attention to this part of the work concerning the welfare of the trees. Owing to the yearly pruning of the trees in removing the brown-tail moths, there has developed a serious condition in the appearance of most of our large elm trees. Where the cut has been made decay has set in and it will not be long before the trees will be in these upper parts a menace to people passing. These decaying limbs should be cut, the wound smeared with tar and dead wood removed from all the trees in the Town. I would recommend the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars ($250) be appropriated for this very necessary work.
GUARDS FOR SMALL TREES. There are guards required for a large number of small trees recently planted owing to the girdling of trees by horses.
CROWDED TREES. Trees that are crowded should be thinned out in all parts of the Town to give room for others to grow and would be a great benefit to the road beds of the street which are kept too wet and shady.
I should recommend that a committee be appointed to serve with the Tree Warden in regard to removing the trees, as some of the people make objections.
The Tree Warden desires to testify to the apparent effort of the Telephone, Telegraph, Light and Street Railway Companies, whose wires pass through the town streets, to conform to the laws and to meet the wishes of the Tree Warden. It has, nevertheless, been necessary to keep constant watch of these wires to prevent injury

to the trees and to make frequent complaints. The reappearance, during the past year, of the elm beetle in very large numbers and with no appropriation available with which to destroy them, resulted in the destruction of the foliage of a large number of our elm trees. These insects work on the elm tree only and an appropriation should be made to destroy them as in failure so to do they will become as great a nuisance as either the gypsy or brown tail moths.
CONCLUSION : In concluding this report I wish to extend thanks to the several departments of the town for their many courtesies shown me. For receipts and disbursements see Auditor's Report.
Respectively submitted,
A. FOSTER BROOKS.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE ROBBINS LIBRARY.
To the Town of Arlington : -
The Trustees of the Robbins Library submit their annual report.
We note a gain in the number of books taken 45,253 for 1906, as against 44,035 in 1905. There has been an increase in the number of books given out in the Children's Room, 10,959 in 1906, as against 10,864 in 1905. The average daily attendance in the Children's Room was 19 and more than double that number on Sundays. The average attendance in the Reading Room was 59 for week days and 53 for Sundays.
Reference work is carried on as usual under the direction of Miss Baston, who not only endeavors to assist all applicants, but acts in cooperation with teachers of the schools, sending them books for use in the school rooms, and keeps the reading tables at the Library well stocked with books on special topics. Attention should be drawn to the work done by Miss Marsh, in interesting the smaller children by pictures, puzzles, etc., in the Children's Room.
The open stack continues to give satisfaction to the public, and greatly facilitates the selection of books. Fewer books have been sent to the branch library at the Heights, yet 269 more books and . magazines have been drawn by people of that section than during the previous year. This was due to the sending of books from the Booklovers Library to the Heights, which were delivered there direct from Boston, and were in constant demand.
The Trustees regret to announce the withdrawal from the Board of Mr. Joseph C. Holmes, after 16 years of faithful service, he hav- ing been chosen in 1890. His place is worthily filled by Mr. C. E. Dall n of Arlington Heights.
We have continued to give exhibitions of photographs, etc., in addition to those hitherto reported.

February and March. No. 52. Photogravures of fourteen Fam- ous Pictures.

The Library has been enriched by gifts of books and magazines from Mr. Winfield Robbins, Mrs. E. C. Turner, Mr. Edwin S. Farmer, Mrs. Charlotte Rugg, Mrs. Franklin Field, Jr., Mrs. B. L. Brooks, Mrs. John F. Souther, and Col. Thomas W. Higginson.
The editors of the Advocate have continued to send us a file of that paper.
Mention must not be forgotton of a very enjoyable day, the 11th of October, when the Trustees entertained the Library Club of Massachusetts. The Chairman of the Board made a brief address of welcome at the morning session, which was held in the Unitarian church, where a collation was served in the vestry at half past twelve. One of the features of the afternoon session was a most enjoyable reading by our esteemed townsman, Mr. J. T. Trowbridge. The Librarian and her assistants had made careful preparation for this meeting and took great pleasure in receiving their many guests at the Library, which was greatly admired by all present.
Respectfully submitted,
SAMUEL C. BUSHNELL, E. NELSON BLAKE, CYRUS E. DALLIN, CHARLES A. KEEGAN, JAMES P. PARMENTER, ARTHUR J. WELLINGTON,
Trustees.
