The Police Signal System still continues to give the utmost satis- faction and to my mind is one of the most valuable adjuncts to this department.
There has been 23,064 duty calls and 743 telephone calls received during the year over this system.
During the year the department has maintained a high degree of efficiency as is shown by the work done by individual members.
With a serious epidemic of crime in all the cities and towns sur- rounding Arlington, we have been particularly fortunate and have captured (in almost every instance in the act) no less than eleven burgulars, thereby clearing up no less than sixteen mysterious bur- gularies committed in other places and recovering property of con- siderable value.
I cannot speak too highly of the services rendered by the patrol- men in the capture of these desperate characters and of the good judgment shown by the officers in the face of grave danger of bodily harm to themselves.
On June 1st. the town celebrated its 100th anniversary and I believe the citizens will be pleased to learn that on that day from 12 a.m. to 12 a m. with the thousands of strangers that gathered on

our streets not an arrest was necessary, not a complaint entered, no property was stolen and no accidents reported.
Our local force was augmented by 4 inspectors, 1 sergeant and 20 patrolmen from the Boston Police Department, and by a detach- ment kindly offered by the Metropolitan Park Commission.
I would recommend that the sum of $9000.00 be appropriated for the maintenance of this department for the year 1908.
In conclusion I wish to take this opportunity to thank the citi- zens of Arlington for the many courtesies rendered me in the en- forcement of law and order.
To the Board of Selectmen, the Town Counsel, Horace D. Hardy, and the Town Clerk, Thomas J. Robinson, for valuable advice and services rendered I extend my hearty appreciation.
Respectfully Submitted,
THOMAS O. D. URQUHART, Chief of Police.
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen of the Town of Arlington :
GENTLEMEN :- I respectfully submit my annual report of the Fire Department, for the year ending Dec. 31, 1907, giving details, the force, apparatus, record of fires, and alarms, with the amount of loss, and insurance on property endangered, as near as possible to be ascertained ; also the appropriation and expenditures together with recommendations and suggestions for the best interests of the department and the Town.
The department has met with a serious loss, a loss from which it will take some time to recover. On Nov. 23, our Chief, Chas. Gott, who has been at the head of the department for the past thirty years, passed away ; he served the town faithfully and through his efforts the department has grown from a very primitive, to one of the best equipped of Towns of this size in the State. The interests of the de- partment were always foremost in his thoughts ; a born fireman, one who never shirked his duty or new what danger was, his loss will long be felt by his comrades left behind. A set of resolutions to his memory was adopted and placed on record and a copy of same sent to his family.
