REPORT OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS
HIGHWAY DIVISION
The reconstruction of Broadway, the installation by the Metropolitan District Commission of its new fifty-six inch water main and the construction of the new Fire Station at the Centre, with the grading of Memorial Park, upset traffic conditions on Pleasant Street, Massachusetts Avenue from the railroad cross- ing at the Centre to Franklin Street, all of Broadway at times entirely shutting off side streets connecting there- with. This upset while regrettable was unavoidable. Because of this work, Broadway is now reconstructed for its entire width and length and the street railway tracks have been removed and the square at the junction of Massachusetts Avenue, Medford Street and Broad- way has been reconstructed with concrete. At the corner of Medford Street and Broadway the side lines of the street were straightened by the acquisition of land formerly belonging to the old Cooper Tavern property, thereby increasing the size of the square and straightening out the side line of Broadway to conform to the side line of Massachusetts Avenue.
Seventeen thousand, three hundred ninety - three dollars and ninety-nine cents were expended on top sur- facing public streets with either tar or asphaltic oil and streets were repaired and cleaned at an expense of $26,641.70. Five thousand, eight hundred and twenty- eight dollars and eighty-four cents were expended on the care and repair of the storm drain system. Seven thousand, six hundred and twenty-three dollars and fifty-five cents were expended upon the upkeep of gravel sidewalks and $10,376.04 upon the care and repair of per- manent sidewalks. Included in the latter were five thousand one hundred and eighty square yards of top surfacing with asphalt of old permanent tar walks.
Following the policy inaugurated in 1917 a section of Massachusetts Avenue on the north side 384 feet long, extending from Franklin Street to the Soldiers' Monument, and one on the south side 1,669 feet long,

WATER DIVISION
On October 26th water from that part of the new 56" main installed by the Metropolitan District Commission this year in Pleasant Street, Swan Street to Massachu- setts Avenue, and in Massachusetts Avenue to Broadway, was delivered to the Town of Arlington's mains through a connection at the Centre, thereby increasing the pres- sure in the Town's low service mains and furnishing an additional source through which the Town can be sup- plied.
Seventeen thousand, six hudred and seventy-one feet of water mains were laid during the year and connected with the Metropolitan system. Details of this construc- tion will be found in Table 6.
The value of the property controlled by the Water Division January 1, 1926 amounts to $21,671.96, of which $7,500 is invested in buildings, $3,500 in tools and equip- ment, and $10,671.96 in material available for new work.
Services
Six hundred and forty-six new services have been added during the year and ten services abandoned. There are for all purposes 2,700 on the low, 2,269 on the high, and 13 on the old reservoir system. On the Metropolitan water supply there are 23 services for municipal build- ings included in the above, 2 for street watering stand- pipes and 40 for sewer flushing purposes. On January 1, 1926, 165 services were temporarily out of use.
Meters
Six hundred and thirty-six meters were set on ser- vices installed during 1922, 1923, 1924 and 1925. The total number of meters in use January 1, 1926 is 4,940.
