Voted : That the sum of $4,750.20 be and hereby is appropriated for the payment of Pensions, during the year 1925, under the provisions of law accepted by the Town.


Article 22 taken up. (Authority of Treasurer to Borrow Money)


Voted: That the Town Treasurer, with the ap- proval of the Selectmen, be and hereby is authorized to borrow money, from time to time in anticipation of the revenue of the financial year beginning January 1, 1925, and to issue a note or notes therefor, payable within one year; any debt or debts so incurred to be paid from the revenue of said financial year.

Article 58 taken up. (To Defray Town Expenses, Overdrafts of 1924, Interest, Debt and State Aid)


Voted: That the sum of $55,000 be and hereby is appropriated for the payment of interest during the year 1925; and that for this purpose $4,037.50 be taken from the receipts of the Water Department; $44,137 be transferred from aviable balances and receipts now in the Treasury and the balance $6,825.50 be raised by general tax.


Voted: That the sum of $105,500 be and hereby is appropriated for the payment of bonds and notes ma- turing in 1925; and that for this purpose the sum of $19,500 be taken from the receipts of the Water De- partment; the sum of $2,000 be taken from the pro- ceeds of the sales of houses on engine house site now in Treasury; the sum of $1,147 be taken from premiums on loans now in the Treasury; and the balance $82,853 be raised by general tax.


Voted: That the sum of $71,462.50 be and hereby is appropriated from the income of the Water Depart- ment during the year 1925 for maintenance and exten- sions, including Metropolitan Water Assessments.

Upon inquiry Charles H. Higgins informed the meeting that there were no restrictions on the land in question and no objections from abutters.

Smith, Bent and Barker acting as tellers-more than the necessary two-thirds) That the Selectmen be and here- by are authorized and empowered, on behalf of the Town, to purchase or take in fee by eminent domain for the purpose of erecting thereon a building to be used for police purposes, all or any portion of the parcel of land situated on Central Street and more particularly de- scribed in Article 25 of the Warrant, that the sum of $10,000 be and hereby is appropriated therefor; and that said sum be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the Selectmen.

Voted : (Unanimously) That a committee of five be appointed by the Moderator to procure plans and es- timates for the construction of a building for the use of the Police Department on land bounded by Central Street, land now or formerly of Benjamin Bloom, William A Muller, Trustee, John Osborn, and Mary R. Winn; said committee to have the power to fill vacancies and not to report to the Town previous to the annual meeting in 1926; and that the sum of $100 be and here- by is appropriated for the use of said committee.

Voted : (Unanimously) That the sum of $15,000 be and hereby is appropriated for the cost of original equipment and furnishings for the new school building to be built on the True lot, so called on Lake Street; and that for this purpose the sum of $10,000 be raised by gen- eral tax and for the balance $5,000, the Treasurer with the approval of the Selectmen, be and hereby is author- ized to borrow the said sum of $5,000, and to issue bonds or notes of the Town therefor, said bonds or notes to be payable in accordance with the provisions of Section 19 of Chapter 44 of the General Laws and all Acts in addition thereto or amendment thereof, so that the whole joan shall be paid in not more than five years from the date of issue of the first bond or note or at such earlier date as the Treasurer and Selectmen may de- termine, said appropriation to be expended under the direction of the Committee appointed to construct said new school building, under vote passed February 13, 1925.

Arlington, April 2, 1925


Pursuant to the vote of adjournment on March 26, 1925, the Town Meeting Members met in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, April 2, 1925, notices having been sent by mail by the Town Clerk seven days before the meeting. Notices were placed in the local papers and posted in two places in each precinct in the town.


Lists of the duly qualified Town Meeting Members were used at the entrances of the meeting place and were in charge of James F Higgins and Philip T Robinson. The Check Lists filed with the Town Clerk at the close of the meeting showed that one hundred and sixty-nine members attended the meeting.


The meeting was called to order at 8:05 P. M. by the Moderator, John. G. Brackett.


The Town Meeting Members who had not already been sworn were sworn by the Moderator.


On motion of Charles B. Devereaux :


Voted: That if the meeting adjourns it adjourn to meet on Thursday evening, April 9, 1925, at eight o'clock.

On the substitute motion as made by Elliott R. Bar- ker, it was


Voted : (Unanimously) That the Town accept the gift of the lot of land bounded by Irving Street, land formerly of Kate P. Foster and owners unknown, being the same land mentioned in Article 35 of the Warrant and in the offer of William T. Foster and Elizabeth W. Foster, dated January 24, 1925, for school purposes ; and further that a vote of thanks of the Town be sent by the Town Clerk to the said William T. Foster and Elizabeth W. Foster for their gift.


Article 36 taken up. (Remodeling in High School Building)


Hollis M. Gott suggested that a slight change be made in the wording of the recommendation of the Fin- ance Committee as it appeared in their printed report. In accordance therewith it was


Voted: (Unanimously) That the sum of $9,000 be and hereby is appropriated to remodel in the High School building, the present lunch rooms into class rooms, and the present so-called swimming pool room into a lunch room, in order to make available for the opening of the school in September, two additional class rooms, said sum to be expended under the direction of the School Committee.


Article 37 taken up. (Outdoor gymnasium at Junior High School)


Voted: That the sum of $1,600 be and hereby is appropriated to construct a so-called outdoor gym- nasium at the Junior High School Centre, in the yard on the Maple Street side of the building, said sum to be expended under the direction of the School Commit- tee.

Voted : That the sum of $750 be and hereby is ap- propriated to provide for locker equipment for the gym- nasium in the High School building, said sum to be ex- pended under the direction of the School Committee.

Voted: That the sum of $1,500 be and hereby is appropriated for the purpose of taking the decennial census of the Town, as required by Chapter 453, of the acts of 1924, said sum to be raised by general tax and expended under the direction of the Board of Selectmen.

the Warrant, under the provisions of law authorizing the assessment of betterments, as made and reported by the Joint Board of Selectmen and Board of Public Works be accepted, said way established and said Joint Board authorized to take land for the purpose of said way.


A request was granted Mr. Kelley, a non-Town Meeting Member, to speak on this matter. Mr. William A. Muller declared his willingness to build this street in case the Town did not accept the street.


On a vote being put before the meeting as to a sub- stitute motion, the same was lost.

Voted: That the laying out of a town way from the southerly side line of Medford Street southerly to a point, a distance of approximately one hundred eighty- five (185) feet substantially in the location of the pri- vate way known as Compton Street, as more particularly described in Article 45 of the Warrant, under the pro- visions of law authorizing the assessment of better- ments, as made and reported by the joint Board of Select- men and Board of Public Works, be accepted, said way established and said Joint Board authorized to take land for the purpose of said way.
