Mr. McGowan has released two teachers, Mrs. Woolaver and Mrs. Stevens, for one period a day to help with the guidance pro- gram in the high school. Because our long-range objective is to provide guidance services for the entire school system, the help of these two teachers brings that goal a little closer to realization.
Many more of our eighth grade students went to Lowell Trade High School this year. It might be well to note that Lowell Trade does grant a high school diploma. Where a student's interest and aptitudes fit him for training in one of the skilled trades, it seems the intelligent decision would be to allow him to go to trade school.
172
In some instances denial has resulted in a student losing interest in an academic course and eventually dropping out of school. From latest reports of school officials and several students, our boys are happy in their choice and doing rather well for the most part.
Because of the experience gained by working closely with students, listening to their problems in counseling interviews, and analyzing test results, I should like to make the following recom- mendations for your consideration:
1. Reading:
Release an interested High School English teacher from one of her regular classes so that she can devote her time to im- proving the speed and comprehension of reading of both college preparatory and non-college preparatory students.
2. Speech:
More colleges are emphasizing public speaking. It is not possible to adequately provide this training in a regular English class because of the many other skills that must be taught. Perhaps a teacher could be provided that could com- bine the special reading class above and speech classes.
3. Summer School:
The majority of our students travel to and from school on busses. Because of this, very few students remain after school for remedial work in the various subject fields. A summer school devoted exclusively to remedial instruction in the tool subjects would fill an existing need. Only one school building need be used and many of our teachers would welcome the opportunity of working with their students during the summer.

REPORT OF ART SUPERVISOR
In the elementary schools the aim of the art department is to combine the practical with the aesthetic. The creative imagination of the child is stimulated, and he is encouraged to develop and put to use his own ideas rather than copying and relying on readymade adult concepts.
Everyone is aware of the contributions of art to daily life. Many things, from us ourselves to our public buildings, speak eloquently of the presence of artistic arrangements, or more loudly, perhaps, of the lack of it. It is essential that the early training of the child preserves his innate artistic abilities and encourages them through creative activities so that he can make use of them naturally in later life. Many practical things come into this category, such as manual dexterity, inventiveness, ability to work with a group and evalua- tion of ideas and results. Art in the classroom gives a unique op- portunity for this, as well as the more artistic achievements of color appreciation, graphic skills, design, and use of varied materials. In the classroom art is also helpful when integrated with other subjects, such as social studies and literature, and used in projects, murals, and other visual methods. Children remember best something they have themselves created.
The high school art program is an elective subject for pupils with special talent or interest in art. The concentration is on the specific rather than the general; more technical subjects are in- cluded, such as color theory, perspective, and techniques of drawing and painting. However, there is only one art period a week, and although the students are eager and the supply of materials excel- lent, the space is inadequate and periods too short and too far apart to accomplish the amount of study that a high school art class should maintain.
The art schedule from January to June consisted of weekly visits from the supervisor to grades one through three, with visits on alternate weeks to grades four through eight. From September through December, with the double sessions, the classes at the North
174
Street and Shawsheen Schools have been visited by the supervisor every other week, and the classes at the Foster and Ella Flemings Schools every third week, with assignments given the teachers to be done between visits. This increase of classes to be visited leaves very little time for teacher-supervisor consultations and for the many other activities that should be an essential part of the school art program.
It has always been a pleasure to work with the teachers of Tewksbury, but since the general tightening-up brought about by the double sessions, their initiative and pleasant cooperation has been particularly appreciated and has helped greatly in making the art program effective.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE
The physical and mental well-being of each school child is a major concern of everyone associated with the Tewksbury Schools. Whether for treatment of minor abrasions or severe emotional upset on his first day in school, the child is in constant contact with the school health services, which are of greatest importance as health and good citizenship are inseparable.
In April, 100 pre-school children were successfully vaccinated against smallpox at the clinic conducted by Dr. Jose Ruisanchez of the Board of Health. On May 1st, 362 children of grades 1 and 2 were given the first in a series of three polio inoculations.
Each pupil now has an annual examination of his eyes and ears in a manner precribed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. Pupils of grades 1, 4, 7 and 10 are examined by Dr. Larrabee or Dr. Kelman and notices sent home for all children needing medi- cal care. More rigid examinations are given to all students partici- pating in athletics.
In our dental clinics at the North Street and Shawsheen Schools, a survey examination shows that more than 80% of these children are in need of dental care, some pupils having as many as 18 defec- tive teeth. Arrangements can be made for only a very small num- ber of these to be cared for by the school dentist.
Although the school provides doctors, a dentist and nurses to discover physical defects in our students, it should be remembered that these examinations are of real value to the child only when he has been taken to his own physician or dentist for adequate correction.
