Report of Selectmen and Board of Public Welfare
The past year in the Town of Wilbraham has been an uneventful one, except that the last quarter of the year was marred by private work slowing up and causing our welfare rolls to rise.
As the relief applicants have called upon us for needed assistance we have endeavored to exercise the best possible judgment in administering to their needs. It has been our aim to provide adequately for each and every case and yet restrict expenditures to a minimum. In many cases they have been given work in remuneration for the aid given. Due to the business conditions the relief rolls have sharply increased the past two months.
Of the funds that the Town appropriated for W. P. A. work $4,011.93 was expended for gypsy moth suppression, road and water work.
The total expenditures for Temporary Aid was $8,836.70; for Dependent Child Aid cases (two) $254.09; for Children in Foster homes $780.00; for Old Age Assistance $9,414.31. At the close of the year there were one hundred thirty-four persons on Temporary Aid.
During the year the town received from the State $6,600 under Chapter 81 and with the town's share made a total of $13,201.10 which was used for the general care of highways.
For the maintenance or tarring of Chapter 90 roads the State contributed $346.62 and the County $346.62 and the Town $346.63-a total of $1,039.87.
On Chapter 90 roads two thousand feet was built in Glen- dale at a cost of $6,265.92: eighteen hundred feet on the East Longmeadow road at a cost of $2,539.72 and the Baldwin Hill was finished (a 1936 contract) at a cost of $4,158.02.
The so called Red Bridge has been built and traffic has com- menced to go over it again. The part that the town pays will be assessed and collected by the State Treasurer as part of our State Tax.
It is gratifying to us that the Town is in such a good finan- cial position with a blance in the Treasury of $45,017.21 with all bills paid. Again we went through the year without bor- rowing any money for our needs.
Very fortunately by the excellent cooperation given by the Division of Accounts we were again able to have a State
13
audit concurrent with the town's fiscal year January 1st to December 31, 1937. This report is presented in another section of this book and shows Wilbraham to be in excellent financial condition.
