The committee respectfully submits the foregoing report and calls the attention of the town to the follow- ing explanations and reccommendations.

There is an arrangement made by the town with the trustees of Somerset Academy, by which pupils above the grammar grade may attend theacademy. We have had an attendance of 40 at the academy the past year. The trustees have maintained a school at the academy of three terms, ten weeks each, costing the town on an average of about $8 per pupil for the year.

According to a vote passed by the town, we have maintained schools in those districts, abolished by the general law, thinking it better to do so than to convey the small scholars to a distant school.

No money being raised fortext books in 1899, we

19

found many books wanting, no copy books, and a large number of text books worthless, consequently we were obliged to withdraw the account as above.

Knowing the condition of affairs in town, and the bur- den of taxation under which we are laboring, your com- mittee, hesitate to recommend any change which will entail an additional outlay. We will simply state facts and leave their consideration to the town.

The school house on Lord's Hill is not suitable to keep chickens in let alone human beings. It seems to us that a school house situated at the corner near the Gifford place would accomodate more pupils at less cost than the old site.

The school house at West Athens is in about the same condition. They need a new house badly. Their school is the second in size in town. The measles broke up that school in the summer so we had but four weeks. The remainder, 19 weeks, was in the fall. The committee advocated two terms in the fall but the house was in such condition that the people thought it best to have no vacation.

You will remember that the town raised $100 00 for repairs on that particular house if the committee thought best. That money has not been used as we thought it would be useless to make any extensive re- pairs.

The school house in the Poland District is in bad con- dition. They need a new house or extensive repairs.

Twenty-five dollars will place the school house at the "Town Farm" in good shape.

We have made a few minor repairs and purchased one new stove. We recommend that the following amounts be raised-viz :- Repairs $50.00, Text-books, $50.00, Support of schools and interest on School Fund note $800.00

It seems to us that some of our vacant school houses

20

might be utilized. They are rotting down and doing no good to any one. Our idea would be to sell the one at Corsons Corner and use the money in building a new one where it is needed. There is a good house near Benjamin Moody's which is doing no good.

Why can't that be moved to some other spot?

It will cost $500.00 to build and equip a school house at West Athens; $400.00 on Lord's Hill; $200.00 to re- pair the one in the Poland District

Can we afford to raise so much money, or utilize some of the other houses which are idle? We have stated to you the facts, you can take what action you think necessary.

You well understand the conditions under which we assumed the care of the schools last spring; no report of the year before, and no way of ascertaining the true state of affairs. We have tried to do our duty con- scientiously, and we heartily thank the citizens of this town for their kind assistance.

Most respectfully,

L. C. Williams, Supt.

F. P. Collins, G. C. Hight, H. S. Elliot,

School Committee
