All schools have maintained a good average attendance ow- ing to the teachers employed who have taken great interest in their work and a good advancement in the line of school work has been the result of the efforts of both teacher and pupil.
SCHOOL BOOKS.
We were obliged to overdraw the text book appropriation on account of the graded work of Somerset Academy. More and higher grade books were necessary to carry on the work success- fully as such an institution means much to our town pupils.
SCHOOL HOUSES AND REPAIRS.
Only a few repairs have been made on school houses the past year and we still have quite a balance unexpended.
The situation on Lord's Hill remains the same as ever. A new school house or a change for the better is very much needed.
Respectfully submitted.

An earnest effort has been made to improve the schools by grading the studies uniformly throughout the town and introduc- ing a regular system of promotions and graduations; by holding teachers' meetings and aiding the teachers, in other ways, to raise their standard and methods of instruction; by introducing a few kinds of improved text books better suited to the absolute needs of the pupils; by organizing School Improvement Leagues. In all these efforts, we have had the hearty co-operation of near- ly all of the teachers.

TEXT BOOKS.
Many of the books were found to be too badly worn or shat- tered to be of service and many more were totally unfit for use in schools like ours. Therefore the appropriation was, of neces- sity, heavily overdrawn, nearly one half of the expenditure being for the Academy. The reading books now in use are absolutely unfit for the use of our pupils and, consequently, the standard of reading by the children is far too low and can not be satisfac- torily raised till better books are provided. This will require an increased appropriation.
Arrangements have been made with the trustees of the Academy for the payment to the town of a rental of one dollar per term for the books used by each out-of-town pupil, and the same has been collected for the years of 1903 and 1904.
