The offering and awarding of prize pictures to the schools having the highest rate of attendance and the lowest rate of tardiness each term, the publishing of the records of the schools, in this respect, and of the Rolls of Honor in the newspapers, and the strong influences in favor of regular and prompt attendance exerted by every teacher have caused great improvement and especially so where the parents have co-operated heartily with us. In the few cases that the parents have failed to manifest any interest in the matter, the results have been disastrous. The whole number of cases of tardiness would have been very small but for six pupils. The Washington school in the village with thirty-five pupils had only nineteen cases and the Longfellow with nineteen pupils had but ten cases.

It was found necessary to suspend the school near the Ha- thorne farm during the fall and winter terms because of a lack of a sufficient number of pupils. But, as there may be some quite young pupils in that vicinity the coming year, it may be best to re-establish that school.
