School IReport

To the Superintending School Committee of the town of Hartford :-

GENTLEMEN :- I herewith submit to yon, and through you to the citizens of Hartford, the school report for the year ending Feb. 6, 1909. The work of the schools for the past year has been completed in a satisfactory manner. Our teachers have been capable, conscien- tious and hard working. The parents should keep in touch with the school work of their children from day to day and not throw too much of the responsibility upon the teacher and the school system. Beginning with the spring term we plan to have a "Visitation Day" once each term at each school and I hope the parents will feel it a duty to visit us on that day and feel free to talk over all school ques- tions. The closer the public keeps in touch with its servants, the better results are obtained.

The question of grading is a subject of great importance and we hope to have a graded system established during the spring term. This must be flexible to a great degree. A large part of the pupils are well fitted in arithmetic but a large percentage of them lack in grammar.

The attention of the citizens is specially called to attendance. Do not expect your boy or girl to do a week's work in three or four days. The attendance at two of our schools has been very low and many of the children must fall behind if continued through the year.

In conclusion, I wish to thank you, the members of the school board, for the kindly consideration you have given to all matters presented, for the work that you did for me when I first came among you, and for your hearty support in my work. To the teachers, pupils and the citizens in general my thanks are extended for help and kind words of appreciation.

Respectfully submitted,

ISAAC A. SMITH, Superintendent.
