To the citizens of Thornton, N. H .:

In reply to the question that has been asked, "Why our text books are not uniform in all our schools?" we wish to say that they are uniform now, with the exception of our reading books, those we have bought in different kinds, so as to exchange with the schools, to give them more supple- mentary reading, which they are in need of.

We have introduced "Stories of Colonial Children" for supplementary reading. A "Home Geography" for begin- ners in geography. Also a language book, "With Pen and Pencil," for beginners in language study. The schools are well supplied with wall maps, globes, dictionaries and other reference books.

We would again urge the parents and those interested in school affairs to visit the schools often so as to know per- sonally what kind of work is being done in the school room.

According to our new school laws, every day a pupil is absent means a financial loss to the town, as well as a loss

28

to the pupil, tardiness affects the school work in about the same way.

It is to be regretted that our per cent. of attendance this year was only 67 per cent., so low that we did not get our state aid, or money back on our teachers which were Normal graduates. Parents can remedy this by causing the children to be on time, and regular in their attendance at school, unless kept at home by illness.

Respectfully submitted,

. FRANCES H. EMMONS, FRANK A. BARNARD, School Board. MARGARET T. BIDDLE,
