To the citizens of Thornton:

We believe a very large per cent. of our schools for the past year have been a success. We arrive at this conclu- sion from our personal knowledge of them, and from the fact that the schools, as a rule, have not been severely criti- cized by people who never go into the school room, or know anything about the work that is being done there.

In a report of this kind, it is always in order to advise the parents to visit the schools so that they may become ac- quainted with the methods that are used for the education of their children, and we will say right here that in a few of our schools the advice has been favorably acted upon, but there is room for much improvement in that respect yet.

There is another matter of very great importance that we wish to bring before the citizens of the town in this report, and that is, the duty of raising money. If you will compare our last year's report with the present one, you will

see that the amount of school money that we are required to raise by law has been cut down $352.50, or from $975.00 to $622.50. This is a large per cent. out of our school money and must be made up by raising additional money, or our terms of school will grow shorter, instead of longer, and we will be farther behind our neighboring towns, in re- gard to schooling, than we are now. We call your attention to this matter here, so that you may have ample time to make your plans for attending the annual school meeting and when you are there, do your duty by the children, who will soon take our places in the affairs of life.

Respectfully submitted,

FRANK A. BARNARD, MARGARET T. BIDDLE, School Board. LAURA A. HORNER,
