Report of Board of Health,
For the Town of Canaan for 1897-8.
The sanitary condition of this town is very good, yet we have abated some nuisances, and other things might be done to much improve the health of our people.
There have been two cases of scarlet fever and one of typhoid fever reported for the year, and a few cases of measles, all o which were very closely quarantined and kept from spreading, thereby preventing a great deal of sickness.
The book or ditch running south of Canaan Village we found to be very foul and had become a public nuisance. This we thought best to abate by first forbidding the dumping of refuse and of all matter into it. Also, cutting off the connection of privies with the ditch and now find it all right, and with a little pains in cleaning out each year, there will be no more trouble from it.
Some have been very lawless to leave dead cats and other animals above ground, but that has been abated, also, as far as our knowledge extends.
The water that supplies our village is very good for part of the year, and other times it tastes very much of the swamp, and for the better health of the people we would recommend the Crystal Lake Water Company to extend their main pipe out into the lake a suitable distance, to get good, pure water, and thus avoid drinking so much surface water.
Secretary for Board of Health,
F. A. BOGARDUS.
