Report of Board of Health,
For the town of Canaan for 1898-9.
With the exception of Influenza or the (French) La Grippe, which is and has been prevalent over all the country, a few cases ot Variella or Chicken Pox, and a very few cases of Sporadic Typhoid Fever, the health of our people has been unusually good during the past year ; but this fact should not allow us to feel that we can rest in perfect security, and relax cur efforts in putting and keeping our premises in the best condition possible
The Board request all who have dead animals, to take the carcass away from roads and residences, and bury them, not throw them into water, standing or running, unless we want our Lebanon neighbors after us with a heavy fine, as the water of our streams flows into Mascoma Lake, the source of their water supply, and which they are guarding very carefully, occasionally sending an agent this way to see that the law is complied with.
For privies use dry earth freely.
For sink drains use dry earth and chloride of lime where the water cannot be run into the garden or on the land, which should be done if possible as valuable for a fertilizer.
Brush, sawdust, boxes, barrels and all perishable articles, should be burned in the garden, as too valuable for the ashes, to be dumped beside the road, besides being unsightly, and which is at the same time unlawful.
Old cans, tinware of all kinds, broken glass, crockery, and all
42
articles not perishable,, which have been dumped beside the road, should be taken up, and can be disposed of on the land of Ira B. Norris, and back of O. L. Rand's block, and it is hoped that this timely warning and request, will be sufficient without further action of the Board, which it is their duty to see carried out
Crystal Lake Water Co. having extended their main pipe into the Lake, thereby removing the cause of complaint in the past as to the quality of the water, we believe we are supplied with as pure water, as is furnished any city or village in the state.
We therefore call upon all our citizens to assist us in protect- ing it from contamination, for those who use it throughout all the year ; and here we would call attention to the very severe penal- ties for placing anything on the ice, or in the water of any source of supply of water for domestic use.
One thousand dollars fine, and a year's imprisonment ; and for throwing anything into any brook or river, the penalties are the same, very severe ; so it becomes the duty of every person, young or old, to aid in carrying out the provisions of the law.
E. M. TUCKER, Secretary for the Board.
