SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT
TO THE PIERMONT SCHOOL BOARD:
In spite of a long drawn out epidemic of mumps, and another of chicken pox well started, our schools have been busy and have done good work this year.
There were nine schools in session in the spring term, eight in the fall term, and six are in session this winter, but the term will not end till March. The East Piermont and Rodimon districts will have had twenty-seven weeks in two terms, and all the others will have thirty-five weeks in this financial year now ending, but only thirty-three in the school year ending in June. The plan is to have a long fall term of fifteen weeks, and a. winter and spring term of nine weeks each, so that the spring term will neither begin in mud time nor end in hot weather. In order to shorten the spring term the winter term has been made longer than usual this year. From now on the plan can continue with thirty-three or thirty-four weeks in both financial and school year.
Many have asked the age at which pupils may be allowed to leave school. The law was changed in 1913 and as it now stands children must attend school until they have reached the age of sixteen, or have completed the grammar school course. That is, children are not com- pelled to attend school after completing the grammar school course whether they have attained the age of sixteen or not.
The New Hampshire Program of Studies has been fol- lowed for several years now, and the monthly reports sent by each teacher to the superintendent show that our schools are together in their studies and both in the small districts and in the village schools are following this course closely.
During the year eleven teachers have been employed. We hope the six now teaching will finish the year, and sev- eral have signed contracts to that effect; their work is above the average without exception both in discipline and and instruction.
Our State Superintendent, Mr. Morrison, is very em- phatic in his statement that each school building should be a model in its district for appearance and proper care. With this in mind I would suggest a coat of paint for both River Road 1 and 2. Of course it is the most economical
27
way in the end not to wait till the boards are completely exposed to the weather before painting.
Personally I hope the bill will pass which will undoubt- edly come before this session of the legislature, making dis- trict supervision compulsory, as I believe such a trained supervisor can do best work for the town. In case this does not become a law, I am willing, if desired, to finish out this school year. In any case I can say at the end of five years of work in the schools that I could wish my successor nothing better than the same delightful co-opera- tion which I have had with the school boards under whom I have worked, and the same kindly feeling and helpfulness of parents, teachers and pupils.
