MOFFETT.


1. WILLIAM MOFFETT was one of the earliest settlers of Winchendon, Mass. John. Joseph, and William Moffett were in that town as early as 1753, residing in the western part of the town. William Moffett was a soldier in the Revolution. He m. in Lunenburg, Mass., Sept. 22, 1766. Mary Price (?) of Shirley. The record of the marriage is found in the County records, and the name of the bride is not plainly re- corded. The birth of four children is on record in Winehendon.


2. JAMES MOFFETT, son of William 1, b. in Winchendon, Mass., May 7, 1773, by town records, May 9, 1774, by family record lived a few years in Langdon and vicinity, coming to this town 1815. He m. Betsey Sartwell, b. 1779, dau. of John and Elizabeth (Gleason) Sartwell, and grand-dan. of Simon Sartwell 5 (See). He was a farmer. d. April 1, 1885. His widow d. Sept. 10, 1863.

2. WILLIAM MOOR, son of John 1, b. in 1718. m. Molly Jack. He moved to Bedford in 1745, where he became a prominent and useful citizen ; was one of the petitioners for incorporation ; a member of the first board of Elders of the Presbyterian Church, and for many years received frequent and honorable mention in the town records. He d. in Bedford, Feb. 17, 1789. He was a brother of Col. Daniel Moor of the Revolution.


3. WILLIAM MOOR, son of William 2, b. in Bedford, Feb. 29, 1760. m. March 25, 1788, Isabella McClary. He was a Rev. soldier, and for many years prominent in town affairs. He d. in Bedford, May 5, 1844.

He was educated in the Haverhill, Mass., schools, and commenced the study of theology in 1875, in the Mead- ville Theological School, from which he grad. in 1877, and was ordained in Haverhill, Mass., the same year. He was located as a Unitarian minister in Nantucket, Mass., from 1877 to 1880; Lancaster, 1880 to 1890, supplying the Unitarian church of L. from 1881 to 1888; Laconia, 1890, until he d., Sept. 22, 1896. Under his administration in L. the Unitarian church was erected, in 1884, and the society organized and placed upon a substantial basis for effective denominational work. A. F. and A. M. K. T.


MORSE.


The name was originally De Mors, which was changed to Mors. Morce is an ancient name of Norman origin, and was changed to Moss. Godefridus de la Morse of Normandy held a fief from Philip Augustus of the honour of Malherbe. (Norman People, p. 338.) The coat-of- arms of Hugo de Mors, 1358, was 500 years old at the time of Edward. The motto is, "In God, not arms, Trust." (Memorial of the family of Morse, for Hon. 4. STEPIEN MORSE, son of Anthony 3, b. in Newbury, Mass., Dec. 28, 1695. m. in 1725, Elizabeth Worth. Six ch. He was a deacon.


5. STEPHEN MORSE, son of Stephen 4, b. in Newbury, Mass., in 1727-8. m. May 26, 1749, Judith Carr. He res. in Newbury, Mass., where he d., June 1, 1753.


6. STEPHEN MORSE, son of Stephen 5, b. in Newbury, Mass., May 1, 1751. m. in 1777, Sarah Bayley. He bore the title of Capt., and is said to have moved to Haverhill. Eight ch. He d. April 29, 1825.


7. JOSEPHI MORSE, son of Stephen 6, h. in Newbury, Mass., Aug. 29, 1786. m. Lucretia, dau. of Capt. Samuel Wetherbee 3 (See). She d. in West Concord, Vt., Jan. 21, 1822, aged 34 years. He moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1816. After the death of his w. Lucretia he m. again.


8. MOSES NOYES MORSE, son of Stephen 6, b. in Haverhill. m. May 15, 1806, Hannah G. Sanborn. He d. in Haverhill.


9. JOHN F. MORSE, son of Moses Noyes 8, b. in Haverhill, June 8, 1828. m. June 15, 1854, Susan, dau. of Carleton Johnson of Bath. Hle res. in Batlı.


10. HARRY M. MORSE, sou of John F.9, b. in Haverhill, March 22, 1857. m. Dec. 31, 1889, Helen, dau. of John Norris Oakes (See), b. in Franconia, Jan. 31, 1863. He was educated in the Haverhill and Lisbon High Schools, and commenced the study of law with John L. Foster (See), where he remained one year. He then studied with Ed- ward D. Rand (See) two years, and was admitted to the Bar in Concord, Aug. 31, 1880. He located in Lisbon, and was, until the death of Ed- ward D. Rand, a partner in the firm of Rand & Morse. He was after- ward a member of the firm of Morse & Morris for a time. For several years he has res. in L., in active practice. Special Justice Police Court. I. O.O. F. No ch.
