RIX.


The Rix family is of English origin. Robert Rix commanded a body of reserves at the battle of Flodden Field, Sept. 9, 1513. Sir John Rix lost his head on account of his adherence to Queen Anne Boleyn. The ancestral home of the family was Brancaster Castle, Kenninghall, Norfolk Co., Eng.

Joseph East- man's Co., in an expedition to Crown Point. He was one of the first settlers of Boscawen, but afterwards moved to Concord, and then back to Boscawen. He was educated in the schools of L., Newbury, Vt., Seminary, and Wesleyan Univer- sity, Middletown, Conn., from which he grad. in 1868. He attended lectures in Union Theological Seminary, N. Y. City, one winter, and in 1863 was given an exhorter's license by Rev. S. E. Quimby, and a local preacher's license in Aug. 1864, from the L. Quarterly Confer- ence. He taught school the following four years, and in 1868 entered the N. H. Conference Seminary at Tilton as Prof. of Latin and Greek, supplying the pulpit on Sundays at Moultonboro' from April to June. In 1869 he was elected Prof. of Mathematics and Science, in the Daniel Drew Ladies' Coll., Carmell, N. Y., where he remained three years, preaching occasionally. He supplied the pulpit in Landaff from Sept., 1872, to April, 1873. He was ordained Deacon by Bishop Clark, April 11, 1869, and Elder in the Methodist church by Bishop Simpson, April 20, 1873. His first wife, the mother of his son Valen- tine, was in England, sick, in 1649. IIe m. second, about 1651, Mar- garet (Fowler) Osgood, b. 1615, dau. of Philip Fowler of Ipswich, Mass., and widow of Christopher Osgood. She m. third, Thomas Coleman, and fourth, Thomas Osborn.


2. VALENTINE ROWELL, son of Thomas1, m. Nov. 14, 1643, Joanna Pindor. He settled in Amesbury, Mass. He d. in Salisbury, May 17, 1662. She m. second, William Sargent, and third, Richard Currier.


3. PHILIP ROWELL, son of Valentine2, b. March 8, 1647/8. m. Jan. 5, 1670, Sarah Morrill, b. Oct. 14, 1650, dau. of Abraham and Sarah (Clement) Morrill, of Salisbury. He was a shipwright and inn- keeper. He was killed by the Indians, July 7, 1690. She m. second, July 31, 1695, Onesiphorus Page ; m. third, Daniel Merrill.


4. JONIN ROWELL, son of Philip 3, m. March 2, 1714/5, Elizabeth Colby, b. Dec. 7, 1694, dau. of Samuel Colby. He was a " joiner " in Salisbury and Amesbury, Mass., and soon after 1720 he removed to Chester, where he d. previous to 1744.


5. JOIN ROWELL, son of John 4, b. in Amesbury or Chester, lived in Chester. He was in Capt. Goffe's Co., Col. Blanchard's regi- ment, Crown Point service, 1755, and in Capt. IIazen's Co., Col. Goffe's regiment, Canadian service, 1760. He d. in service, Oct. 23, 1760.


6. SAMUEL ROWELL, son of John 5, b. in Chester, 1754. m. Nov. 27, 1777, Sarah Duston, b. April 15, 1758, dan. of Paul Duston, of Weare. During the Revolution he served in the siege of Boston, and was in Arnold's expedition, also in Stark's brigade at Bennington, and later in the Continental line. He lived in Chester, in Weare. and again in Chester, where he d., June 11, 1830. She d. Aug. 27, 1842.


7. SAMUEL ROWELL, son of Samuel 6, b. in Weare, Oct. 8, 1778. m. in Dorchester, Mass., Oct. 29, 1805, Mary Atwood, of Milton, Mass. He lived a few years in Chester, and subsequently in Waterford, Lyn- don, and Kirby, Vt. He d. in Lancaster, Dec. 28, 1871. She d. May 6, 1879.
