TUTTLE.


The name has been spelled in numerous ways, some of the more common being : Tuthill, Tuttil, Tutall, Tuttell, Tutle, Tottle, Tothill, etc., but the last named seems to be the correct one, meaning "The Hill of God." There are many eminences in Eng. bearing the name of Tothill, and the present way of spelling is a corruption of it. (The Tuttle Family, by George F. Tuttle, New Haven, Conn.)


1. JOHN TUTTLE, bro. of Richard, of Boston, b. in England. m. Joanna - Hle emigrated to America and settled in Ipswich, Mass., as early as 1635. Representative, 1644 ; made freeman, March 13, 1639. He went to Ireland about the time the disheartened colonists of New Haven, Conn .. were negotiating for the city of Galloway for a future home ; established himself advantageously there, and was joined by his wife in 1654. He d. in Carrickfergus, Ireland, Dec. 30, 1656.


2. SIMON TUTTLE, son of John 1, b. in 1637. m. first, in 1659, Joan, dau. of Thomas Burnham. m. second, in 1662-3, Sarah, dau, of John Cogswell, d. Jan. 24, 1732. In 1678, he had a right of commonage in Ipswich, Mass. d. Jan. 1692.

1. JOSEPH UNDERWOOD, an emigrant from England, was of Hingham, Mass., 1837, and later of Watertown, Mass., where he was admitted freeman, 1645. He d. in Watertown, Feb. 16, 1676, aged about 62. ' " Goodwife Underwood wife of Joseph Underwood dyed Jan. 28 1667." The probate records name the children : Joseph, Thomas, Sarah, Han- nah, Elizabeth, and Martha.

2. JOSEPH UNDERWOOD, son of Joseph 1, b. in Watertown, Mass., 1650, d. in Reading, Mass., 1691. His will names wife Elizabeth and children : John, Joseph, Jonathan, Joshua, Mary, Hannah, and Eliza- beth.


3. JOSEPH UNDERWOOD, son of Joseph 2, b. in Watertown, Mass., May 28, 1681. m. in Reading, Mass., 1707, Susannah Parker, b. 1687, dau. of Nathaniel and Bethiah (Polley) Parker of Reading. He lived a few years in Reading, and removed, about 1715, to Westford, Mass. " He was active in all public affairs and was evidently a man of char- acter and influence." He was a farmer and innholder. He d. in Westford, Jan. 29, 1761. John Underwood of Bradford, Vt., and Jeremy Underwood of Jaffrey were sons of his son, John Underwood.


4. TIMOTHY UNDERWOOD, son of Joseph 3, b. in Westford, Mass., 1724. m. Rachel Russell. He was captain of a company from West- ford, engaged in the Concord and Lexington fight, April 19, 1775. He removed from Westford to Putney, Vt.


5. JAMES UNDERWOOD, son of Timothy 4, b. in Westford, Mass., 1771. In his childhood his father removed to Vermont. He m. Han- nah -, and lived in Springfield, Vt., until about 1815, when he removed to Swanzey. He was an innholder, and the Underwood Tavern is an inspiration in the annals of Swanzey. The record of the death of his first wife is not secured. He m. second, Dec. 6, 1809, Mrs. Eunice Sebastian, widow of Samuel Sebastian. He d. in Swan- zey, Feb. 4, 1832.


6. TIMOTHY UNDERWOOD, son of James 5, b. in Springfield, Vt., April, 1803. m. Ruth Burgess. For many years he was one of the well-known drivers of the mail coaches from Keene to Boston via Fitchburg. After the building of the Fitchburg R. R., he was proprietor of a livery stable in Fitchburg, Mass., where he d., Sept. 30, 1863. Of his eleven chil- dren only one has resided in this town.

He was page in 42d Congress ; railroad accounting in St. Louis, 1874-80 ; manager at New York of St. Louis "Journal of Commerce," 1880-81; Chief Clerk, Agricultural Division, tenth census ; clerk to U. S. Railroad Commissioners, March, 1883, to December, 1886. In January, 1887, he removed to New Hamp- shire and established " The Record " at Plymouth. World's Fair Com- missioner, 1891-93. He was one of the originators of the New England Summer Resort Association and active in the publications of the organ- ization. In 1895 he was appointed Bank Commissioner for term of three years and removed to Concord, where he resided through his term of office. WALLACE. WALLIS.


1. JAMES WALLIS, by occupation a weaver and a farmer, was one of the colony of Scotch-Irish emigrants who gathered at Worcester, Mass., 1718, and a few years following. His homestead of forty acres was in the adjoining town of Leicester, and in an ancient deed " it bounds on Worcester." In 1758, while in the possession of a son, the little farm was annexed to Worcester. James Wallis had a brother, Oliver, a wheelwright, who probably died about 1735, and an unmarried sister, Sarah. He d. in Leicester in 1746, or early in 1747. The widow, Mary, declined administration on the estate, and alleged that he had then no relatives in this country. She requested the appointment of Hugh Thompson. She subsequently had a home with her son James, and d. in Colrain, Mass., in Feb. 1769, aged 70 years.

2. JAMES WALLIS, son of James 1, b. in Worcester or Leicester in 1733. In 1750, Nathan Moore was appointed guardian of James Wallis, aged 17, son of James Wallis, late of Leicester, deceased. In 1756, Agnes Wallis, of Rutland, single woman. conveys to " James Wallis, eldest son of our father," her interest in the homestead "of the late James Wallis of Leicester, he agreeing to support our mother Mary Wallis, now of Rutland." He m. April 8, 1756, Mary McClellan, b. 1734, dan. of Michael and Jane (Henry) Mcclellan, of Pelham. At this date he removed to the paternal homestead, which on his petition, dated 1757, was annexed to Worcester, 1758. In 1760 he removed to Colrain, Mass. He was a deacon, a prominent man in town affairs, and a soldier in the Revolution, serving several enlistments. In a de- scriptive roll dated 1780, he is described : " Age, 46 years ; stature, 5 ft. 5 in. ; complexion, light." A record of his death is not acces- sible. His wife d. in Colrain, June 12, 1800, aged 66. So far as known his children were, -
