tion. These persons were considered "eligible" if it seemed clear they had been year-round residents for five or more years since 1900.
A list of "eligibles" was ready for use in the spring of 1948 and a special form was printed for the gathering of data. Present residents of New London had an opportunity to check this list at the town library.
In an effort to compile complete and accurate informa- tion wherever possible, the biographee or his close relative was approached by mail. Extensive correspondence was re- quired to find some former New Londoners and get their biographies. Postmaster James E. Shepard II and his staff at the New London Post Office helpfully forwarded many letters. This made it possible for the author to continue her work on the Family Records when she could not be in New London. Many town clerks-particularly those in the towns surrounding New London-and tax collectors were most co- operative in the searching out of data from their town rec- ords. Mr. Stanley A. Spiller's previous efforts to collect bio- graphical data also gave assistance in a number of cases.
A public listing (in the town library and in the Elkins Post Office) of the names of people difficult to trace brought some clues to their whereabouts. Miss Dorris Smith, Mrs. Frederick Whittemore, Mrs. Benjamin Sargent, Mr. Percy Thurston, and Mrs. Nathaniel W. Colby of New London and Mrs. Libbie Cass of Springfield were especially helpful. Many other people recalled pertinent details about some of the biographees which will help the reader glimpse person- alities, interests, and achievements. The author appreciated the use of bound volumes of the Town Records from the town library.
With the cooperation of the library staff, "office hours" were held several afternoons in the summers of 1948 and 1949. Many residents of Elkins and New London were inter- viewed personally and some calls were made on biographees outside New London.

A HISTORY OF NEW LONDON
Thus, an honest attempt was made to get information about each and every biographee. The symbols (nfda) and (nfdr) are used at the end of some biographies as an expla- nation of incompleteness.
"No further data available" (nfda) means that the author was not able to obtain any more information about that bi- ographee. In many such cases the biographee or a close rela- tive could not be located, or perhaps there was no one who could give very much information. On the other hand, "no further data received" (nfdr) means that the biographee or a close relative could be located (First Class Mail was not returned by the United States Postal Service). Whenever only limited data were available or no data were received about a biographee, the author drew up a brief biography from data at hand to provide as much information as possible for the reader.
Assembling the cumulative mass of information into individual biographies clearly showed that some interesting and worthwhile parts would have to be omitted. For ex- ample, only the most limited mention has been made of the houses occupied by the biographees while they were resident in New London. Detailed vital statistics-dates of marriage, dates of birth of children, etc .- had to be deleted from the shorter biographies of children within a parent's biography. The niceties of expression have been sacrificed to the need for brevity.
Typing of the biographies in a form suitable for the printer with a carbon copy for the families to check began in the summer of 1951. The author has attempted to write biographies satisfactory to the families on the one hand, but consistent with the other biographies and accurate. The im- portance of detail and completeness was recognized, but it was felt that the happiness and peace of mind of people were transcendent.
These biographies include information revised to the time of submission to the printer in August, 1951, and the
345

months following. The reader will find briefer listings in- cluded for those families and individuals not mentioned in other biographies but resident in New London on April 1, 1950.
Corresponding with and talking to people with New London ties proved to be a most pleasant experience for the author. Throughout all the work on the Family Records Dr. J. Duane Squires offered helpful guidance and encourage- ment. Lastly, the author is grateful for the patience and thoughtful cooperation of her family.
USING AND UNDERSTANDING THE FAMILY RECORDS:
A Key to Symbols
The biographies are arranged alphabetically and each has been assigned a number from 1 to 1557. All references to a biography within the Family Records will be by that biography's number and NOT by the number of the page on which it appears. While it should be fairly simple to locate the biographies of those individuals who have separate listings, the Index at the end of the Family Records lists the following groups: all persons entitled to separate listings, their spouses, and their children. A person listed in the previ- ous volume but just mentioned and not given a biography in these Family Records has his date of death recorded at the end of the biography in which his name appears. This last group of persons and a few other individuals are also indexed. Every woman is listed under her maiden name and each of her married names. Arrolyn (Hayes) Vernon helped with the compilation of the Index.
A few general statements on the organization of the biographies should be of help to the reader:
1. Addenda and Errata are to be found at the end of the Family Records, but immediately preceding the Index. In order that the reader may not overlook Ad-
346
A HISTORY OF NEW LONDON
denda and Errata, reference is made to them in the Index as follows: Beals, Lynn S., Jr., 58, A & E.
2. The author has given a clue to the age of some biographees by making use of "declared age" at the time of that person's marriage-when recorded in New London's Vital Statistics. In such cases the Latin circa (about)-abbreviated "c."-indicates that the date of birth is approximate.
3. "Tax-payer NL -" means that that bi- ographee's name appeared on the resident tax list in the years mentioned-some indication of the years he ac- tually was living in New London between 1900 and 1950. If no other information was available, the author used the previous town history as a source of reference for dates of residence in New London before 1899.
4. When referring to a town in New Hampshire, the author did not include "N. H." All other towns and cities are located by state.
5. If a person has a full biography or a limited bi- ography as the spouse or child of a biographee, all refer- ences to that person in other biographies are by number alone-the number of the biography in which he is listed. This avoids repetition, but in some cases the reader may have to consult several biographies to get all the information he wishes about an individual or family. For example, in biography 71 there is reference to Flor- ence May Bickford (524) and to Faye Eaton French (cf. 438). The reader will find a full biography-no. 524- for Florence May Bickford, but the cf. 438 refers to a limited listing within biography 438 for Faye Eaton French.
6. Persons interested in genealogy will be aided by the following symbols:
An asterisk follows the names of all persons who also are listed in the previous town history covering the Town's development to 1899.

(m), (d), (m & d) These three symbols often will be found after the names of grandchildren of a bi- ographee and they are intended to suggest to the reader those grandchildren who might be carrying on the family line (see biography 691). A grandchild who has been married and is still living has (m) fol- lowing his name; one who died without marrying, (d); one who was married but is deceased (m & d). However, the reader is warned that these symbols could not be used when definite data on the grandchildren were not available.
