181 SILVESTER TILTON, son of Silvester Tilton, 123; married, first, Mary (Hull?); second, July 11, 1818, according to the records at Freehold, N. J., Mary Falkin- burg, widow of Caleb Falkinburg, and daughter of Samuel Woodmansee. Salter, in his History of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, says she was born in 1799, and that Caleb Falkinburg died Jan. 8, 1815, and signed his will in 1817. It is evident that Salter is mistaken both in the date of Mary's birth, and also either in the date of Caleb's making his will or of his death.

HISTORICAL MISCELLANY

201 REUBEN TILTON, son of Jeremiah Tilton, 130, "born June 28, 1779; died, May 9, 1826, aged 46 years, 10 months and 12 days;" married Mary Holoway, "born Oct. 25, 1784; died, Apr. 25, 1827, aged 42 years, 5 months and 28 days." These are the exact readings of their tombstones.

Reuben Tilton was probably born in Monmouth County, and from there removed to Little Washington, near New Brunswick, N. J., but returned to Monmouth County, and made his home at Morrisville, near Holmdel. He was a cooper by occupation, and was killed by the falling of an apple tree on his farm at Morrisville. Originally he and his wife were buried at Middletown, but afterwards his daughter, Eliza Shellard, had their bodies removed to Keyport, N. J.

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Morris, of Glendola, has stated that "My great-grandfather, Jeremiah Tilton, had a daughter, Lydia Tilton, a sister to my grandfather, Reuben Tilton, who was my father's aunt; she married Richard Bowne, and lived to be nearly an hundred years old."

Mrs. Mary Ann Borden, of Red Bank, N. J., a grand-daughter of the Lydia referred to in the last paragraph, says "Aunt Polly, the wife of Reuben Tilton, was a half-sister to my grandmother, Lydia Wright."

Mrs. Sarah Bowne, wife of George Crane, another grand-daughter of the said Lydia, but by her second husband, Richard Bowne, says "We used to call Charles Tilton, son of Reuben Tilton, 'cousin,' because he was related to us on my father's side."

There seems very good reason, therefore, to suppose that Lydia was in some way related to the Tilton family, but she could not have been either sister or half-sister to Reuben, for the dates of their births are only six months apart. And, furthermore, she is called Lydia Taylor, the wife of Richard Bowne, on her tombstone; and it was as "Lydia Taylor, the daughter of the wife of Lewis Hall" that she was married, first, to Thomas Wright, Mch. 6, 1800, by John Smock, J. P. Both names are spelled errone- ously in the record at Freehold of her second marriage, which reads Richard Bound [Bowne] married Lydia Right [Wright] at Middletown, Aug. 17, 1806.

An old Bible says that Corlies Tilton was born Aug. 26, 1802. But tombstone and Bible agree in date of death and age, "Aug. 13, 1869, aged 67 years, II months and 17 days."
