WOODWARD OF

NEW JERSEY

ANTHONY WOODWARD was born, near Ashford-in-the-water, Derbyshire, 1 England, in 1657. He was still there, 12mo., 22, 1682, when his sister Alice was married to Edward Booth, in Ashford Friends' Meeting. He emigrated to America and was for a long time on Long Island, whence he removed to New Jersey, bringing with him a certificate of removal to Chesterfield Monthly Meeting, which described him as a young man in good standing. He married, in Chesterfield Meeting, 12mo., 14, 1686, Hannah, daughter of Thomas Foulkes, whom he appears to have previously known in England. The Friends appointed to ascertain their "clearness on account of marriage," etc., re- ported they were "not satisfied concerning her and John Hooten," and requested them to "stay one month longer, but contrary to their desire they Proseeded in their marriage, which was some trouble to Friends."

Anthony Woodward became a large land owner, and was held in high esteem by both the East and West Jersey Proprietors, who, in their travels from Burlington to Shrewsbury, made his house a stopping place. He was prominent in Chesterfield Meet- ing; held many township offices, and was a Member of the General Assembly of East Jersey, during the administration of Lord Cornbury.

He died, and was buried Mch. 16, 1730, leaving a will dated Dec. 29, 1718, and proved Mch. 26, 1730, in which he mentioned:

his wife, Hannah; sons, Thomas, John, Anthony, William, Joseph and Samuel, and daughters, Elizabeth King, Mary Maltsby, Clement Woodward and Sarah Woodward.
