1688, Nov. 9. Thomas Whitlock, Sr., of Middletown, sold for £3-12-0, to John Ruckman, Jr., of the same place, eight acres, lying at Mohorus brook, and bounded by lands of John Ruckman, Sr., James Grover and the late Edward Tart, which the said Whitlock had received from the Proprietors by patent. Daniel Seabrook, a witness.
1689, Mch. 26. Thomas Whitlock bought of John Bowne, of Middletown, planter, six acres of meadow and salt marsh lying at "Shoale Harbour," in Middletown.
1691, Feb. 12. Thomas Whitlock, Sr., of Middletown, for £II, sold to his son, John Whitlock, ninety acres of land lying on the west side of Mohorus brook, the boundaries of which were Garret's bridge, Garret's brook, "which is the small brook coming from the hill and running south thirty four chains to the line of William Whitlock's land," Garret Wall's land, John Whitlock's land and William Whitlock's land. This was the land Thomas Whitlock received from the Proprietors March 10, 1676.
1692. Thomas Whitlock was a Grand Juryman in Monmouth Co.
1693, June 10. Thomas Whitiock, of Middletown, sold land, in Westchester, to John Bugbee.
1693, Sep. 4. Thomas Whitlock bought of John Pearce, of Middletown, cord- wainer, for £5, six acres of land at Shoal Harbor.
1695, Mch. 26. Thomas Whitlock, yeoman, of Middletown, for fio, sold to John Whitlock, yeoman, of same place, nine acres of meadow or pasture land.
Thomas Whitlock's residences in the villages of Gravesend, Middletown and Westchester were overlapping. Before he abandoned one he apparently ventured upon
393

another, and, holding lands in each, was confusingly spoken of as a resident of each, and as undivided lands were apportioned to non-resident holders he frequently was granted lands though absent. He also apparently bought and sold property in these settlements as a speculation.
A study of the records gives his residences as follows:
1655, and earlier, at Gravesend.
1664, at Middletown.
1666, at Gravesend, where he probably remained until 1672.
1673 to 1678, at Middletown.
1678 to 1686, at Westchester.
1686 to 1703, at Middletown.
The parentage of his children is unascertained, but it seems that the boys may have been, by reason of their age, by his first wife, as well as his daughter, Susanna, while the other children were probably the issue by one of his later wives. So far as the deduc- tion concerning Susanna goes, I realize it is faulty, for to have been the daughter of a Susanna, she must have been born prior to 1655, when Thomas Whitlock had a wife, Mary, and we know that Susanna Pew, his daughter, was living in 1760, which would have made her one hundred and five years and upwards. It is also worthy of note that Thomas Whitlock left no daughter, Mary, though he had two wives by that name. It may be, of course, that he had such a child, and that she died young.
Thomas Whitlock was an energetic and aggressive man, of restricted education, but endowed with a strong, clear mind, which, coupled with integrity, placed him high in the esteem of his fellow townsmen, who selected him to fill the positions of constable, grand juror, foreman of jury, town surveyor, etc.
"Carelessness, physical bravery and unlimited hospitality are Whitlock traits."
The walking stick of the first Thomas Whitlock, marked "Thomas Whitlock, 1692," is owned by Joseph Whitlock, of New York City.
His widow, Mary, was a communicant of the Middletown Baptist Church, in 1712, as also another of like name, Mary Whitlock, who was likely the wife of John Whitlock, The latter is again mentioned in the Church list of 1731.
4. Mary, wife of Thomas Whitlock, the first, is further alluded to under the Seabrook family.
The original will of Thomas Whitlock is on file as well as of record at Trenton, N. J. A copy of it is as follows:
In the name of God, Amen. I Thomass Whitelock of Shole harber in midletowne in east newjersy yeoman being weake of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory, do make and ordaine this my present Last will and testament in manner and forme following, first I will that that all my debts and funerall Charges be paid and discharged. William H. Stillwell, Esq., in a written pedigree of his ancestry, gave to John, son of George Griggs, the Immigrant, a son John Griggs, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Whitlock, the First. Whence he obtained this information I know not and it is unsupported by any evidence that I know of.
2 THOMAS WHITLOCK, JR., son of Thomas Whitlock, I, came, with his father and brothers, from Gravesend to the Monmouth tract in 1664, but was of Gravesend in 1671.
In 1673, he took the Oath of Allegiance to the Dutch.
He was included in his father's application for lands, in 1675, but as no patent was issued to him, and no further allusion is made to him, it is conjectured that he died be- tween 1675 and 1676, without issue.
3 WILLIAM WHITLOCK, son of Thomas Whitlock, I, was a settler on the Monmouth tract as early as 1664, to which he had come with his father and brothers from Gravesend.
In 1669, he married, in the village of Gravesend, Kattrine Dorcet.
In 1673, he took the Oath of Allegiance to the Dutch.
1676, Jan. 10. He received from the Proprietors a grant of one hundred and thirty- two acres of land, at Strawberry Hill, adjacent to his brother John.
1677, Mch. 21. William Whitlock and John Whitlock were owners of a pair of oxen which ate Benjamin Devall's wheat. Devall took up the oxen and John Whitlock took them away privately, etc., Freehold, N. y., Records.
1683. William Whitlock agreed with his father to use the latter's cattle-mark in Middletown.
1684. William Whitlock was bondsman for Mordecai Gibbons, administrator of the estate of Richard Gibbons.
1685. William Whitlock was a Juror.
1689. William Whitlock, of Middletown, planter, was bondsman for Mary Masters, widow, and administratrix of Francis Masters, of Shrewsbury.
1690, Mch. 30. William Whitlock, of Middletown, bought fifty acres of land, lying at Shoal Harbor, from Daniel Estell.
1693, Sep. 23. William Whitlock, of Middletown, bought of John Gibbonson and Danill Hendrickson, of Flatbush, Kings Co., Long Island, for £1oo, a tract of land of one hundred and four acres, at Strawberry Field, twenty-four acres of marsh and upland lying at the "bogg meadow," and fifty acres of land lying at the bogg meadow joining to it, all of which said land said John and Daniell have leased of said William Whitlock

by deed, bearing date Sep. 22, 1682, but if they pay to said Whitlock within four years after the 10th of March next £20, a year till March 1697, then the deed is to be void. Freehold Records.
1698, May 16. John and William Whitlock sold adjoining farms, at Middletown, to Daniel Hendrickson. In the deed they are mentioned as "late of Middletown, now of Freehold," and John was joined in the conveyance by his wife, Mary, who made her mark. What had become of Kattrine Dorcet, wife of William, is unexplained, but he signed alone.
He removed to Cape May, where, Sep. 30, 1707, his lands were sold by his brother, John Whitlock, of Freehold, to Jonathan Swain and his wife, Ruth Swain, of Cape May. While resident there, he recorded his cattle-mark, Feb. 27, 1693/4; was a Juryman the same year, and an appraiser of an estate in 1696, and debtor to the estate of John Stubbs in 1704.
4 JOHN WHITLOCK, son of Thomas Whitlock, I, came, with his father and brothers, from Gravesend to the Monmouth tract in 1664.
In 1673, he took the Oath of Allegiance to the Dutch.
1676, Jan. 10. He had granted to him by the Proprietors one hundred and four acres at Mahmoras Brook, and twenty-six acres of meadow and wood at Strawberry Hill, in Middletown. This land he sold, May 16, 1698, to Daniel Hendrickson, and moved thence to Freehold, where he settled on lands purchased this same year, Apr. 2, 1698, of Thomas Boels, of Budshill, in Freehold, and which remained in the possession of his descendants till 1895. This tract is located at Mount Pleasant, near Morganville, and originally contained one hundred and ten acres.
He signed his name to documents; his wife made her mark.
1683, Nov. 30. He recorded his cattle-mark.
1692/3. He was a Grand Juryman.
1693, Aug. 22. John Whitlock, carpenter, of Middletown, bought of John Crafford, of the same place, thirteen acres of meadow lying at Shoal Harbor, bounded by the meadows of William Whitlock, Thomas Cox and Sarah Reape.
The Proprietors records show that at one time he was apparently interested in the Whale Fisheries.
1715, Oct. 14. John Whitlock and John Whitlock, Jr., were debtors to the estate of Peter Watson, merchant, of Freehold.
1716, June 12. John Whitlock, of Freehold, yeoman, conveyed to Peter Watson, in exchange by his deed of even date, a small tract of land lying between their properties, on Baker's bog, for a piece of the land of said John Whitlock.
1721, Aug. 23. John Whitlock, of Freehold, yeoman, sold, for £40, land which he had from Humphrey and John Wall, to Joseph Morgan. The land was near Thomas Warne's and Peter Watson's. Baker's brook, and Baker's bog, and the lands of Dr. Johnston and Company, and Thomas Warne are on the boundaries. Witnesses to the deed were Gideon Crawford, Richard Saltar, Jr., Charles Morgan.
1725/6, Jan. 10. John Whitlock, yeoman, of Freehold, conveyed to his son, Thomas Whitlock, of Freehold, one-half of all his lands upon his decease, reserving one third thereof to his mother, if she outlives the donor. The deed includes the Boels purchase of 1698.
1726, May 1. John Whitlock, Junior, and John Whitlock, Senior, both of Freehold, carpenters, sold to Walter Wall, of Middletown, for £150, part of the land on which the

ABIGAIL WHITLOCK, daughter of Thomas Whitlock, I. 7
Some years ago Miss Harriet Bray, a most conscientious, painstaking genealogist, wrote me: "I am quite disappointed that you have not yet located Abigail . . , wife of Samuel Ogborne, Second. Abigail Whitlock, daughter of the original Thomas, lacks an husband and I have been tempted to marry her to Samuel Ogborne and defy the interested to prove that she was not. She is the only Abigail at large I can find whose dates are suitable." This conjecture is entitled to consideration but it is well to recollect that Samuel Ogborne, the Second, came from West Jersey, and may have brought his wife with him.
9 JOHN WHITLOCK, son of John Whitlock, 2, removed to Middlesex County about 1726, and was living in Perth Amboy, in 1738. He was a carpenter by trade, and married, prior to 1738, Elizabeth
