John, son of Emanuel Wooley, 1659-1714 Mary Potter, his wife, 1664-1735 John Woolley, Jr., 1690-1772 Patience Lippitt, his wife, 1698-1775 Benjamin, son of John Woolley, Jr., 1718-1798 Catharine Cook, his wife, 1720-1784 Jacob, son of Benjamin Woolley, 1760-1826 Elizabeth Tucker, his wife, 1767-1854

There was not the slightest scrap of evidence existing to indicate that any one of the first six persons mentioned above had been buried in the yard. He has given erroneous dates in some instances. He calls John's wife Mary, when she was generally known as Mercy. And he was absolutely wrong in asserting that Catharine Cook was the wife of Benjamin Woolley, 53, the son of John, Jr., 23. The dates of birth and death of that Catharine, who married this Benjamin, are given correctly, but it was not Catharine Cook, rather was it Catharine Husbands. Catharine Cook became the third wife of Benjamin Woolley, 25, in 1744, and probably had no issue by him, while it was Catharine Husbands, "spinster," who had marriage license dated Apr. 2, 1750, with Benjamin Woolley, Jr., 53, and called "junior" for the very purpose of distinguishing him from his uncle, the husband at that time of Catharine Cook. As proof of the cor- rectness of this position there are the positive facts, first, that the oldest child of this

marriage was born in 1752, or not until eight years after the marriage of Catharine Cook took place; and secondly, that in the Parker family descended from Benjamin Woolley, 53, there is a small book with the dates of death of the parents, and of birth and death of their children, and this reads:

Benjamin Woolley, died 5mo., 23, 1798. Catharine Husbands, died IImo., 18, 1784.

1791, May 3. Will of Benjamin Woolley, of Shrewsbury; proved July 25, 1798, mentioned:

56 BENJAMIN WOOLLEY, t son of Benjamin Woolley, 25, married, by license dated Jan. 13, 1759, Elizabeth Ribbet; Daniel Woolley being surety on the bond.

*The date of their marriage does not agree with the other records of the Shrewsbury Meeting, for those records show that the first intentions were published in 4th month, the second in 5th month, and that the Committee reported them to have been married in orderly way, 6th month.

tThere was a Benjamin Woolley, at present unplaced, among those who had their property confiscated and advertised for sale, Feb. 17, 1779.

WOOLLEY OF MONMOUTH COUNTY, N. J.

The three separate signatures of Benjamin Woolley to be seen attached (a) as surety on the bond of Daniel Woolley, Aug. 8, 1758; (b) as surety on the bond of Stephen Woolley, June 18, 1760, and (c) on the bond for his own license to marry Elizabeth Ribbet, Jan. 13, 1759, show that they were made by the same individual.

Witnesses: George Remsen, James Cooper, John Brinley.

The above is to be found in Volume IX, page 17, of the publications of the New York Historical Society.

57 DANIEL WOOLLEY, son of Benjamin Woolley, 25, born Feb. 1, 1717; married, first, ..... ;* second, by license dated Aug. 8, 1758, Patience Throckmorton; Benjamin Woolley being surety on the bond; third, by license dated Feb. 23, 1763, Sarah Allen; Daniel Jeffrey being surety.

The signatures of Daniel Woolley on the license bonds for his own marriages are identical with the one as surety on the bond that his half-brother, Benjamin Woolley, obtained to marry Elizabeth Ribbet, Jan. 13, 1759.

1767, June 1. Daniel Woolley and wife, Sarah, deed land that was bounded on the East by Benjamin Woolley, to Joseph and Daniel West, single men.

They also give a mortgage to Montilion Woolley, 103, on ten acres of land that had been conveyed to him by Daniel Woolley and Sarah, his wife, Mch. 26, 1776.

1781, Nov. 25. Will of Daniel Woolley, of Shrewsbury, yeoman; proved June 4, 1799, mentioned:

son, Daniel, to have one-third of the east part of what my father gave me; sons, Jedediah and Mon- tilion, to have all the lands I bought of "my brother Woolley;" sons, Joseph and James Woolley, to have the remainder; three youngest sons, Daniel, Joseph, James; three daughters, Sarah Tallman, Margaret Thompson, Lydia Cobett.

Executors: Friend, William Green, son, Daniel Woolley.

Witnesses: Noah Taber, Peter Wolcott, Benj. Jackson, minor.

*The calling of one of his sons, perhaps the oldest, Jedediah, suggests that the first wife of Daniel Woolley may have been a daughter of Jedediah, son of Ephraim Allen, born Apr. 6, 1695.

Ellis, in his History of Monmouth Co., says that "Thomas Borden kept a tavern during the Revolution at Farmingdale. After his death his widow married James Parker. Thomas Borden had issue by her, a daughter who married Hugh Boud, and their son was Charles G. Boud." In this the use of the name of Thomas for Amos is a mistake.
