Captain John R. Scull's Company of Infantry. First Regiment, Gloucester Brigade.

Tala company was organized April 14, 1814, the officers commissioned May 6, 1514, aud was called a Volunteer Company, First Buttahon, First Regiment, Gloucester Brigade, New Jersey Militia. Paring the month of May it volunteered " for the protection of the maritime frontier " in accordance with section 8 of the Militia law of February 12, 1814, and was ordered into service during the War of 1-12-15 he Governor Pennington. In the call for troops made by the Governor Angost 12, 1814, this company was exempted from the detail. " having volantecred to pe. form certain services." The company was enrolled for duty at Somers Point Gloucester (now Atlantic) county, and was stationed at Somers Point and along the seacoast to Cape May. They appear to have had but one continuous tour of duty, which was from May 25, 1814, to June 11 1814, and for which they were paid by the State, by act of the Legislature, February 9, 1515; but during all the rest of the year they were always " prepared for actual service on any sudden emergency " and were called out several times by alarms along the coast for the immediate defence of the State. They were finally discharged at the close of the war at Somers Point, February 12, 1815.

NO.

Officers and Enlisted Men in the United States Army from New Jersey.

War With Great Britain, 1812-1815.

War between the United States and Great Britain was declared by an act of Congress approved June 18, 1812, and by a proclamation of the President the following day.

When the war was declared the strength of the regular army was but two regiments of dragoons and seven regimente of infantry.

Under the provisions of the acts of Congress approved January 11, and June 26, 1812, and other subsequent acts, the regular army establishment was increased to a war footing by the organization of a large number of new regiments. When war was declared there were many officers in commission and serving in the regular army who were appointed from New Jersey and who continued in the service With the increase of the number of regiments many others were appointed from this State, and were commissioned as officers of these new regimeuts.

At the close of the war, and as provided by an act of Congress approved March 3, 1815, the strength of the army was reduced from a war to a peace footing by the disbandment of regiments or by their consolidation with those regiments designated to be retained in the regular establishment. Under orders thus directing the reduction and reorganization of the army, many of the officers appointed from New Jersey were continued in commission and service and were assigned to the retained regiments; while those whose services were no longer required were honorably discharged.

Under the provisions of the several acts of Congress directing the increase of the regular army establishment to a war footing, recruiting was ordered in the several States In various sections of New Jersey recruiting stations were opened for the enlistment of men for this eervice. A large number enlisted in and from the State to its credit and were assigned to the several regiments either organized or being organized. The terms of enlistment were one year, eighteen months, for the war, and for five years.

The declaration of peace was ratified by Congress February 17, 1815, and by the President's proclamation dated February 18, 1815, declaring peace re-established. Under an act of Congress approved March 3, 1815, those who were enlisted for the war were honorably die- charged Those who were enlisted for five years were permitted to be discharged or transferred to regiments which were to he retained in the service, to eerve the onexpired term of their enlistment.
