Officers and Enlisted Men in the United States Navy and Marine Corps from New Jersey. War With Great Britain, 1812-1815.
The War with Great Britain was not only a combat between the land forces, but was bitterly contested by the naval forces as well, and some of the most sanguinary battles of this war period were fought on the high seas.
At the commencement of this war, the naval branch of the United States Government had but little strength in either ships or men, but there were in commission and enlistment officers and men who had had a naval training and personal experience during previous haval contests with France, in 1795- 1801. and Tripoli. Africa, 1801-1905.
The active service performed by the naval forces during this war period was not confined to the shores of this country, but covered the North Atlantic. South Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, where, in mauy hard-fought engagements. the discipline and ability of both officers and enlisted men proved their superiority, and made an impression everywhere as to the daring and seamanship of the forces composing the navy of the New Republic, which had for a long time been subjected to disrespect and looked upon with derision by older natious. who were now forced to an acknowledgment of their mistaken judgment.
Among the brave and able officers and enlisted men who so gallantly and meritorionsly served in our nation's navy, many were from New Jersey. That they were both faithful and efficient, is shown by the following records of their service. gathered and compiled from the fragmentary records on file at the Navy Department, Headquarters of the United States Marine Corps, and other Depart- ments at Washington, D. C.
