ALBANY: PUBLISHED BY SAMPSON, DAVENPORT & CO., NO. 55 STATE STREET. JUNE 1, 1866.

Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1866, by SAMPSON, DAVENPORT & CO., in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Northern District of New York.

VAN BENTHUYSEN'S STEAM PRINTING HOUSE.

TO OUR PATRONS.

Notwithstanding other parties have this year undertaken to supplant us in publishing this annual, and that they secured the advertising and other patronage usually bestowed upon our work, before we were aware of the fact, leaving the impression with many of our patrons that they were in our service. We commenced the work at our usual time, in our accus- tomed systematic manner, and now present the result of our labors to the public.

The whole number of names in the edition of last year was 19,219; the number in this issue is 21,563; showing an increase over last year of 2,344 names. Of the 19,219 names in last year's edition, only 8,307 remain unchanged in this issue; and 6,704 have either changed their residence, business or business location. These figures show to some extent the com- plicacy of the business, and they give evidence of the amount of labor required, as well as the faithfulness with which our work has been performed, yet, while we are aware that our experience in compiling the book during the past ten years, together with that of publish- ing many others during the past sixteen years, has given us advantages in the business over others, and made the work to us comparatively easy, we only allow these advantages to stimulate us to renewed efforts.

In every edition since 1857, we have introduced some improvement or addition which would tend to enhance its value as a book of reference; and this year we take pleasure in presenting to our patrons a fine copperplate map of the city, engraved by Messrs. Gavit & Co., on which the counties of Albany and Rensselaer are represented.

As some of our people have been led to believe that the Directory has been printed and bound at Boston; that the labor of collecting and compiling the names has been wholly per- formed by Bostonians, and that Albanians have generally been excluded from employment upon the work, we desire to state that such is not the fact; and if these persons would but take the second thought, they would see plainly that, while Albany affords all the facilities required, such a course on our part would tend quite as much to our disadvantage as to that of the city. From the year 1857 to the year 1864, Mr. Joel Munsell has annually printed the book for us, and during that time Mr. C. Van Benthuysen has done the binding. Since the year 1864, Mr. Van Benthuysen has done both the printing and binding; he has also manufactured type during the past year expressly for this business, and furnished, of his own manufacture, a good share of the paper consumed.

The names have always been mainly collected by Albanians, many of whom we have fur- nished with permanent employment during the past six or eight years. We can also say that, instead of any part of this work being taken from the city, we have annually brought business to it amounting to many thousand dollars. The Troy Directory, published by us for the past ten years, has annually been printed and bound here; The New York State Busi- ness Directory, issued by us, which work contains about twelve hundred pages, is also printed here; and other Directories have, and we have good reason to expect they will in future be printed and issued from this office.

In regard to being considered non-residents for having a branch office at Boston, we would say that a great many of our most prominent business men, who have partners and branch houses at Chicago, New York, or other cities, could with the same propriety be called non- residents.

To the business people who have so universally encouraged us by their patronage as well as words of cheer, we return our thanks; and by strict attention, with renewed exertions on our part, we hope yet to be found much more worthy of their liberal patronage ..
