Constituting " the city of Albany, that part of the town of Bethlehem adjoining said city and lying northerly of the Normans kill, the town of Watervliet, in the county of Albany, including therein the villages of West Troy, Green Island and Cohoes; and in the county of Rensselaer, the village of Lansingburgh, the city of Troy, and the towns of North Greenbush and Greenbush; and in the county of Schenectady, all that territory covered by and included within the lines of the property of the New York Central Railroad, between the cities of Albany and Schenectady, and the city of Schenectady, are hereby constituted and territorially united for the purposes of police government and discipline therein, into one district, which shall be known and called ' The Capital Police District of the State of New York.' "

THE NEW YORK CENTRAL RAILROAD, running the entire length and through the most populous part of the State, forms one of the great, oldest and best managed links of communication between the East and the West.


It has two Eastern termini, one at Albany and the other at Troy, connecting at Schenectady and running thence West through Utica, Rome, &c., to Syracuse, from which point there are two roads running to Roches- ter known as the "Direct Road," via Port Byron, Lyons, &c., and the "Old Road," via Auburn, Cayuga, Geneva, Canandaigua, &c. From Rochester there are also two roads running West, one through Lockport, &c., to Niagara Falls, and the other through Batavia, &c., to Buffalo. Also, a branch commencing at Buffalo and running along the banks of the Niagara river, through Tonawanda and the village of Niagara Falls to Lewiston ; and likewise a branch from Tona wanda to Lockport.


At either Albany or Troy passengers for New York and intermediate places connect with the Hudson River Railroad, Harlem Railroad, or (during the season of navigation) with North River steamers. Passengers for Pittsfield, Springfield, Worcester, Boston, Hartford, New Haven, Providence, and intermediate places, connect with Western R. R and its connections. Passengers for Saratoga Springs, Rutland, Burlington, Montreal and all places North, also connect by railroad, from either Albany, Troy or Schenectady.


Passengers for Sharon Springs leave the Central Railroad at Palatine Bridge and go from there by stage. Those for Cherry Valley, Cooperstown and places South, Icave at Fort Plain. Those for Trenton Falls leave at Utica and go by railroad. Those for Watertown. and places North connect with the Rome & Watertown Railroad at Rome.


At Syracuse the Central R. R. connects with the S. & B. R. R., running to the Erie R. R. at Binghamton, and with the O. & S. R. R., running North to Oswego.


At Canandaigua with the Northern Central Railway for Elmira, Baltimore and Philadelphia.


At Rochester with the Erie R. R., and with steamers for all ports on Lake Ontario.


At Buffalo with steamers on Lake Erie (during the season of navigation), and with the Lake Shore R. R. to Erie, Cleveland, Sandusky, Toledo, and thence to Chicago by Michigan Southern R. R
