The Syracuse Northern Rail Road, completeda little more than a year ago, shortens ta distance for western bound travelers by bore than forty miles. By it passengers maarrive in Syracuse in season to transfer torestern hound trains on the New York Celral, that would have been missed by going hrough to Rome, as they were formerly obred to do. There are fourteen stations on his short cut of 45 miles, which makes it ;ry convenient and accommodating to the cal trade.

The road is under t, able superinten- dency of C. B. Morse, lg., whose pride it is to run trains on schule time, It is a noted fact that for nearl a year the trains on this road have not issed connection, except on occasions of sere snow storms. Advertisement on page 3.

The Rising Sun ad New York Recorder. published &Gouverneur by Miss M. M. Smith, is we worth the sub- scription price and we lieve enjoys a liberal patronage. Miss nith has been successful in establishing d maintaining a lively paper, and we h her success may be permanent. See dvertisement, page 378.

Otis Earle, General merchant at Her- mon, N. Y., advertises on page 382 that he has a general assortment of goods usually kept in a country store. His stock of Dry Goods is complete and prices low. In the line of Groceries, Hardware, Hats, Caps, Boots, Shoes &c., he is well supplied with best quality goods. Mr. Earle is a business man, and believes "a nimble sixpence is better than a slow shil- ling," hence his customers get their wants supplied at the lowest living prices.

W. B. Allen & Co., Hardware dealers, Brass and Copper Founders, at Ogdensburg, advertise on page 208. The business was established many years ago by Chaney & Allen, when a large trade was built up. The successors to the old firm have increased facilities, and can accommodate their customers as well as they can be served anywhere. Card on page 208.

Charles Marceau, Carriage maker and Boiler and Machinery repairer, at Ogdensburg, prints a card on page 246. Mr. Marceau is an ingenious workman, who will give good satisfaction to his custom- ers.

Ogdensburg Advance, as at pres- ent managed by Chas. J. Hynes, is a suc- cessful Newspaper. Its circulation is largely increased and it is worthy the liberal support it receives at the hands of the Democracy. Mr. Hynes has added so much to the office in the way of new type, presses and other material, that for fine printing the office cannot be excelled. Mr. Hynes seems to have the good will of the people, and is the only successful publisher of a Democratic paper in St. Lawrence Co. for many years. This is no doubt owing to his excellent business management. See advertisement on page 366.

John Moclennan, Stockholm Depot, N. Y., prints a card on page 378, in which he informs the public that he will execute jobs and contracts of Carpenters' and Builders' work in a workmanlike man- ner. We fully endorse his statement and believe those who employ him will get satisfaction. He is also a Cabinet Maker, and in this branch of the business he can please his customers by doing nice work reasonably.

Higbee & Baker, Tin and Stove dealer at Ogdensburg, advertises on page 214. Mr. Higbee of this firm has been located here many years, and is well known as a successful tradesman. Mr. Clark Baker, though a new man at the helm in this business, is well known in the county as a popular School Commissioner. We wish the new firm abundant success, and from our knowledge of the men, can guarantee their customers entire satisfac- tion. Remember to call and see their large assortment of goods when you are in town, so that when you want to purchase you will know where to go. [Since the above was written, Mr. Baker has retired, leaving S. H. Higbee as sole head of the business he has so successfully managed in the past.]

C. H. Butrick & Co., Grocers, at Ogdensburg, have made many friends during the few years they have been in business here. They keep on hand at all times an excellent stock of fresh Groceries which they are prepared to sell at fair living prices, such as anybody will be willing to pay. Card on page 208. 1

PUBLISHER'S NOTICES.

John H. Austin, Dry Goods and Carpet Dealer, at Ogdensburg, is a " self- made man." Beginning at the bottom of the ladder more than twenty years ago, as clerk in a small country store, his only capital, good health, willing hands and an honest heart, he soon after came to Og- densburg, where he also spent several years as a clerk. Always frugal and observing, Mr. Austin saved money while he was storing his mind with a good, practical business education. Some years since he purchased an interest in the business of his former employer, C. W. Gibbs, Esq., when the business was conducted under the firm name of Gibbs & Austin. After a while this copartnership was dissolved and Mr. Austin moved up town and opened a store in his own name, since which time his bus- iness has steadily increased. He is a good judge of goods and a close buyer, and is thereby enabled to give his customers the benefit of good bargains at low prices. Mr. Austin has this spring enlarged his business by the addition of a stock of Carpets and Oil Cloths, and as everything he has in this line is " bran new," we expect his store will be filled to overflowing with the eager crowds who will gather there to secure something newer than their neighbors have. Mr. Austin's stock in all depart- ments is large, and his clerks are courte- ous and obliging to customers. Enter Mr. Austin's name on your memorandum book as one of the places to stop at when you visit Ogdensburg. See card, page 433.

State Normal and Training School .- We take pleasure in directing the attention of our patrons and others, especially the young and those who have children to educate, to the State Normal and Training School at Potsdam. Those residing in St. Lawrence County and vicin- ity will find no institution of learning in their locality better qualified to impart those sterling qualities of head and heart with which all parents wish to endow their children than this, and none more worthy of their patronage and fostering protection ; while those at a distance will find it fully abreast with its seven competitors in this State, and equally meritorious. Its cur- riculum embraces a thorough academic course, for which tuition is charged, and when the student has acquired proficiency in this department he may avail himself of the gratuitous advantages of the Normal course, in which didactics is the promi- nent feature. No one who contemplates making teaching his vocation can afford to ignore the immense advantages, derived from the thoroughness and completeness of intellectual, moral and physical culture aimed at in institutions of this character. They are, as their name implies, model schools, and their object is to perfect as nearly as is possible those who come under their influence, and constitute them model teachers. For further information we refer the reader to the finely illustrated adver- tisement on page 314, and to the historical | fashionable garments ; and, on application, portion of this work on pages 180-xx and 180-xxi.

The Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad, with its branches, forms one of the grandest in- ternal improvements in the State, and has proved a source of immense wealth and benefit to the counties through which it passes. It has given a ready market to our surplus productions, and added greatly to the comfort of traveling. In constructing the road, the projectors employed the best engineers to be found, and spared no expense to render the work substantial, and the road to-day will compare favorably with any in the country. The Company's machine shops at Rome are very extensive, giving employment to a large force of men. Much of the rolling stock of the road is built there. Since the completion of this road, passenger trains have in the aggre- gate traveled more than 3,000,000 miles, and, as yet, so perfect are the arrangements, only one accident has occurred to trains, resulting in the death of a single passenger. What other road of equal length, and tran- sacting so much business, has proved as safe ? In conclusion, we would say, that the Conductors are invariably courteous, and polite to passengers. The officers always arrange the running time so as to connect with routes at either end of the road. Travelers going East or West will find this route both pleasant and expedi- tious. See Company's advertisement, page 431.

The Courier and Freeman, under the management of Elliott Fay, has grown in favor. wonderfully. Its circulation has been largely increased, owing in a great measure to the large amount of local cor- respondence supplied to the paper. Country newspaper publishers are begining to learn that it is poor policy to rely too much on clippings from city papers. Far- mers and Mechanics prefer incidents of local history, or news items, and the Cour- ier and Freeman fully meets the demand in this particular. Politically it is a staunch Republicar representative of the people of "old St. Lawrence." Mr. Sweet has recently become interested in the business, and it is to be hoped that the usefulness of the paper may be still further increased. The Job Department of this office is fully equal to any demands that may be made upon them. Long life to the paper and prosperity to its publishers and patrons is our earnest wish. Published at Potsdam. See adv. on page 326.

Butterick Co's Patterns, which have gained so much celebrity all over the country, have worked a change in the art of dress making. Formerly a pro- fessional dress maker must be called if fashionable garments were to be made ; but now all that is necessary is to send your address to MRS. ELI OVERTON, No. 205 Gen- esee Street, Utica, who is the agent for these patterns in Central New York, and she will mail a pamphlet, containing sev- eral hundred cuts of various styles of will send the patterns for a very small sum. Card on page 2.
