Mr. Cumming has lately re- tired from the firm and Mr. Fell contin- ues the business at the old stand. Judging from the appearance of his store and fine assortment of goods he keeps on hand, he thoroughly understands the wants of the community and is . deter- mined that no person shall be compelled to go out of town for goods. BUCKEYE
We would respectfully call the attention of our readers to the card of Mr. W. A. Short, published on colored page 229. Mr. Short is an extensive dealer in Watch- es, Jewelry, Silver Ware, Fancy Goods &c., a large assortment of which goods may al- ways be seen at his store at Gouverneur. If you want a good, reliable time-keeper, either gold or silver, at a fair price, Short's is the place to get it. His assortment of Jewelry, Solid Silver and Silver Plated Ware is very fine. Call and see him and you will be well repaid.
F. B. Baldwin, at Ogdensburg, im- ports pure Liquors, Wines, Brandies, Ales &c. He guarantees all goods pure as im- ported. He ships to customers directly from bonded warehouse. at the Custom House, and sends duty paid or in Bond, as the customers prefer. "Frank" is well known throughout Northern New York, as a thorough going business man. We wish him success. Card on page 200.
Wm. I. Goodale, of Colton, is the patentee of a new and justly celebrated Spring Bed Bottom, which has several ad- vantages not possessed by others, the details of which would require more space to narrate than we can spare. As we all have to spend about one-third of our lives in bed, it is worth our while to use the best ; on application to Mr. Goodale he will send a descriptive circular to any address. He will also do this for his new Patent Far- mers' Gate, which has many advantages over others. The use of this gate may prevent the destruction of a valuable garden or field of grain by stray cattle. See card on page 220.
L. H. Dunton, proprietor of Dun- ton's Hotel, at Stockholm Depot, (Brasher Falls Station,) publishes his card on color- ed page 345. Under Mr. D's management this House justly merits the patronage it receives. It is fitted up with a view to the comfort and convenience of guests. The Landlord and all employes about the House are attentive and polite, and the charges moderate. No Hotel in Northern New York has enjoyed a better reputation among travelers. It is the nearest station to Massena Springs, to and from which daily stages run during the pleasure travel. A good Livery is connected with the Hotel.

Beebee Island Agricultural Works .- G. LORD, Proprietor, Water- town, N. Y .- This establishment, one of the oldest in Northern New York, deserves more than a passing notice. The business was commenced about thirty years ago as a plow manufactory, under the control and management of Edmund Davis, who afterwards disposed of his works to J. Lord, his · competitor in the business. It has since passed through the hands of four · different firms, each doing a successful
business and very materially adding to the list of articles manufactured, the reputa- tion of which, throughout Jefferson and adjoining counties, is too well known to need comment. The present works, erect- ed sixteen years since, and situated on the southerly portion of Beebee's Island, and near the Woodruff House and Depot of the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Rail- road, consist of two extensive brick build- ings, covered with slate, and so arranged internally that water power derived from the mammoth flume, (the best in the State,) is made to do all the work and handling of materials and implements with astonish- ing ease, and is in all other respects a model agricultural works. It is at these works the celebrated State Premium Steel Plow, the Young America Mower, the Lord's Corrugated Wood-burner Furnaces, that have been so extensively used, are made.
We are informed by the present proprie- tor, who is a son of the builder of the first bull plow ever used in the county, that he is in receipt of more orders for his manufac- tures than the present capacity of the works will admit of furning out, and he contem- plates soon making additions sufficient to meet the increasing demand for his produc- tions. The great success of this establish- ment is owing in no inconsiderable degree to the fact that none but the best of work- men are employed, each one of whom is master of his particular branch. The ma- terials nsed in the manufacture of machines are all carefully selected, and, finally, Mr. Lord, who is himself a thorough mechanic of long experience gives his personal atten- tion to the supervision of his business, and under his excellent management the " Beebe Island Agricultural Works " must continue as they have ever be-n, the lead- ing establishment of the kind in Northern New York. See advertisements on colored pages 230, 327, 346, inside first cover and facing last cover.
.
Dr. Kingsley, of Rome, justly cele- brated for the many cures he has effected of that most distressing disease, Cancer, publishes a notice on page 1. He is pre- par d to treat all scrofulous diseases, and others of long standing, and assures his patients that they will not be charged a heavy bill and disinissed without receiving any benefit. Persons who cannot conve- niently call upon him in person, can address him by letter, and will receive prompt at- tention. Dr. K. is a graduate, with an ex- perience of over fourteen years in the prac- tice of medicine. Let the afflicted give him a call.
The "Elias Howe " Sewing Machine .- This " Old Reliable " Ma- chine has been so long before the public that it would seem to be almost superfluous for us to add new praise of its many ex- cellent qualities. While it has been fought by many a valiant competitor, its march nas been steadily forward, and to-day, there is no other machine before the public that has more friends and admirers. It re- ceived the Cross of the Legion of Honor and Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition, and has received the First Premium at many of the State and County Fairs throughout the country. Eli Overton, manager of the branch office at No. 205 Genesee Street, Utica, N. Y., will be happy to supply those in want of machines. To all such, we invite attention to the adver- tisement on page 2, opposite the Map.
The Buckeye Mowing and Reaping Machines .- When the great U. S. Trial of Mowers and Reapers was held atSyracuse, in 1857, this admirable machine, which had just been brought out, surprised everybody by its Novelty and many excel- lencies, and won the highest awards. At that time the valuable patents under which it was built were secured for several States by the enterprising firm which now con- tinues its manufacture, Adriance, Platt & Co. At the second great trial of Mowers and Reapers, made by the N. Y. State Agri- cultural Society, in 1866, the Buckeye again carried off the highest honors, showing that in the years' intervening it had not gone backward in the race for superiority. Every new suggestion is thoroughly weighed, improvements only are adopted. The verdict of the people is nearly as unani- mous as that of the learned and practical committees who made these awards, for its sales far exceed those of any other ma- chine in the sections supplied by Adriance, Platt & Co. In fact they increase so fast, that the demand is almost always in ex- cess of the supply. The Self. Raking At- tachment on the Buckeye Machine has met with a success corresponding to that of the Mower, and has surpassed all others in the perfection of its operation. One great secret of the success of Adriance, Platt & Co., as manufacturers, has been in the con- scientious manner in which they have built their machines, and the great dura- bility of the Buckeye machine has been largely due to the excellence of the mate- rial used and the mechanical perfection of the workmanship. See advertisement on Map.
P. M. Crowley, manufacturer of single and double Carriages, Wagons, Sleighs, Cutters &c., Somerville, N. Y., publishes a card on colored page 328. Mr. C. is prepared to do all kinds of work in his line. He gives his personal supervision to every department, and with good mate- rial and good workmen he is able to give the public Wagons, Carriages &c., unsur- passed in workmanship and durability by any in this region. We have no hesitation in recommending Mr. C. and his work to all who require the services of a first-class Carriage Maker.
