Fort Johnson 200 Years Ago
By ARCH ANDERSON
In Its early days Fort Johnson was the home of and was visited by many notable people.
We hear very little of Peter War- ren Johnson, oldest child of Sir Wil- llam Johnson and his second Indlan
the stone mansion at Fort Johnson, and was apparently a very intelligent young man and a dutiful son, for let- ters written to his father could be used as an example for any young man to follow. He was sent to Mon- treal for schooling and later to Phil- adelphia where he attended school and was learning business at the time of his father's death. ..
Peter Warren Johnson was very proficient in French and as a violin- Ist. During the Revolution he was commissioned an officer in the Brit- Ish Army and perhaps the most nota- ble act of his career was whn he chased Ethan Allen into a barn near Montreal and captured him single- handed. Allen, after hih spectacular capture of Ticonderoga, led his Green Mountain boys on rather an indepen- dent campaign against Quebec. And It was at this time, when apparently the "Great Jehovah and the Conti- nental Congress" deserted him and he was captured' by young Johnson and sent to England . as a prisoner. Peter was killed on Long Island ear- ly in the war.
graduated from Union College,
Schenectady,'in the class of 1811, and another son, Robert, 'who was attending the same college when the War of 1812 started and he discon- tlnued his studies there.
All three children Sir William had with his first Indian wife, Caroline, wife, Molly Brant. He was born in| were born at Fort Johnson. The son known as William ,of Canajoharie, attended Eleazer Wheelock's School, now Dartmouth College. Both daugh- ters married white men, one a young Irishman and the other a soldier named Randle, who later became a captain In the American Army and ls Incidentally the only connection of Sir William Johnson who espoused the patriots'. cause.
A man who spent considerable time at Fort Johnson was Dr. Rich- ard Shuckburg, author of "Yankee Doodle," who In addition to belng a personall friend of Sir Willlam, was also Secretary of Indian Affairs un- der the baronet for several years. Some of his recorded correspondence was dated from Fort Johnson.
In 1750 Sir Willlam entertained at Fort Johnson, . Professor Peter Kahn, Swedish naturallst, considered one of the greatest scientists of his time. Of course, the most notable Indians in America at that time were frequest visitors to Fort Johnson, in- cluding King Hendrick, Little Abra- ham and Joseph Brant. Thousands attended the many councils held there.
Another child bor nof Sir William and Molly Brant at Fort Johnson was Catherine, who after the Revo- lution, when the famlly had located in Canada, married a Scotch surgeon on the British Army, named Kedd. This two hundredth anniversary of the settlement of Fort Johnson (orig- Inally Mount Johnson) should make people reallze that west 'of Albany there was no community on this con- tinent where so much of our early She wrote articles on Indian cus- history was created, ' and decisions toms and traditions which were used and plans mare that affected the hls- in English and Canadian schools. She tory of North America .- Amsterdam had one son, Walter Kerr, who was
