Amsterdam Writer Portrays Brant From the Indian Viewpoint
¡West of, the Setting Sun," afic- | mers is a leader of men, one capa- tionized blography of Joseph Brant, ble of clear thinking and as patrio- by Harvey Chalmers, 2nd. Published tic in his own Indian. viewpoint ras by the Macmillan Company of . Can- ada $4.00
Reviewed by Hugh P. Donlon (Amsterdam Recorder)
Addison In his Spectator papers expressed It, "Much may be said on both sides." Among the many dis- putations for which this has held true through the years is the Am- erican Revolution, in writing of which some authors have taken the viewpoint of the Patriots while oth- ers have presented the side of the LoyalIsts. It now develops that there were three sides to the War for Independence, the Indian view- point having been presented by Har- vey Chalmers, 2nd, Amsterdam au- thor, In his first fletlonzed blography of Joseph Brant, "West of the Set- ting Sun."
· The candid portrayal of the lead- Ing characters and presentation . of the facts uncovered while studying the' life of the Mohawk Indian chieftain adds no soothing harmon- les to relieve the dissonances that haye come down through the gen- erations. Some very disagreeable conclusions have been arrived at and most striking parallels between those bitter' years and our own troubled era are to be seen.
Extensive research that went into "West to the Setting Sun," a title derived from an expression used to describe the westerly boundaries of the white man's invasion, is evident on every page. Not only were the ordinary sources used, but Mr. Chalmers went to the archives of the Canadian Government for addition- al material. He secured the assis- tance of Ethel Brant Monture, great- great, granddaughter of Brant, to verify the Indian atmosphere. His re- search concluded, he had a vast his- toricai framework upon which might be hung a half-dozen novels written in the conventional pattern.
Thayendenaga, the Indian boy of thirteen years, Is pictured In the op- ening chapter, and from the locale of the Indian castle at Canajoharie 'his career is traced to maturity when his unusual qualities had made hlm a recognized leader of his peo- ple. Important events in his life are reviewed to the close of the Re- volution, a war in which the Six Na- tions were doomed to defeat regard- less of whether the rebels or the Crown was victorlous.
Joseph Brant has long been the outstanding "Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde" of valley lore. To the early settlers and to their descendants, he was a hatcheting fiend, one who had proved himself immune to the. civilization and cultural advantages of the Wheelock Indian School, to the softening experience as secre- tary to Sir William Johnson and the broadening culture of European trav- el. It. has been the purpose of Mr. Chalmers to show that there was another side to the man and to prove that his mode of warfare was
were the settiers' who saw all' in terms of freedom For the Loyalists who believed that allegiance to the king was foremost among the obli- gations of the colonies.
It is not expected that this view- point, that of the Indian, will prove popular with the old school of
valley historians who preserve a ha- tred of Brant among the heirlooms of the Revolutionary period. To these it can have no more appeal than the British version of happenings from 1774 to the close of the war. Each of the three groups involved in the bloody conflict had its own reasons for fighting and it is reasonable to concede that no one set of records can prove entirely reliable as his- torical, sources. Concessions or no concessions, Mr. Chalmers stands his ground with well authenticated facts.
There may be complaints that the author of "West to the Setting Sun" did not depict Brant, the savage, as the wealth of material that has come to" be the accepted sources of local historians has pictured him to be. That the author went to the Ca -. nadian archives for additional ma- terial might lead to a suspicion that he was seeking only that which would justify the British scalp-buy- ing program that offered a powerful incentive to savagery.
Whatever may be the arguments as to the former, the book dispels the latter challenge completely. There is little to please the Loyalist in the manner in which the' British: double-dealing wth the Long House is exposed. Sir William Johnson, too- long a local hero, is portrayed as he was, not alone as the paternal baro- net responsible for all progress in the Mohawk Valley and as Indian superintendent who took care of his red-skinned charges at the same time, but as the scheming adventurer who played both ends against the middie to his personal advantage, a man saved by sudden death at the very moment when his duplicity had been discovered and as his Scotch- Irish retainers might have put it, "the jig was up."
"West of the Setting Sun" is a well written work with a genuinely Indian atmosphere and coloring. It is a painstaking presentation of a character who will never be under- stood, but one who becomes some- what more understandable at a time when warriors of "civilized" na- tions blow to bits entire cities with thousands of women and children, In- stead of hatcheting and scalping the comparatively few victims of a fron- tler hamlet. If the book does no more than to undo some of the old= time prejudices and brings home the realization that there were three sides, not two, to the American Re- volution, it will have earned Its place among the Important books of valley history.
Other ¡featupres of Interest in
"West to the Setting Sun" are the jacket and inner-cover maps of the quite humans as judged by modern early valley, done by Robert G. Tur- standards. The Brant of Mr. Chal- ner, Amsterdam artist.
