THE ORIGIN OF THE NAMES SNELL AND TIMMERMAN

· By Ralph V. Ehle,

enteenth century. in those days when scholarship was held in higher fame than at present, scholars often sought to mark themselves off from other men by adding a 'Latin ending . tou their names.

According to Klug's "Etymological Dictionary of the German Lang- uage," page 503 the basic meaning of the noun "Zimmer" was "wooden material for building," a meaning which it has to this day in English, but in other Germanic languages there has been a change in signifi- cation. In German and Dutch it now means "room" and in German with the word for "woman". prefixed, namely,"Frauenzimmery it came to mean first a "room for women" d then "women" themselves. This word now seems to have' at present in German a somewhat quaint" or hu- horous significance. According to |Jamieson's , Distionary of the Sct- tish Language to "timmer" in Scotch dialect means do something vigor- ously-thus, to "timmer up the floor,", means to scrub it energetical- ly. At any rate, in the word timner- man," or "zimmerman," the ancient meaning of the word "timmer"

8 Dale Place, Little Falls, N. Y. Both words "snell" and "timmer- man" have origins which reach back beyond the time of the written lan- guage. Both are purely German in origin. "Snell" seems to be ultimate- ly related to the German / word "schneiden," to cut, and hence to "schmeidig," keen, , smart, spruce. When.written records first appeared, however, "snell" meant "brave." Thus in one of the earliest written. ballads, the so-called "Ludwigslied," or "Song in Praise of Louis," composed pre- sumably by a Frankish churchman or monk to commemorate the victory of Selincourt gained by the Christian king Louis III, ruler of the West Franks, over the heathen Norsemen, who were devastating the valleys of the " Seine and Loire, the first line reads, "Ludwig ther snello," that is, "Louis the brave." While Icelandic still preserves this ancient meaning in the word "snjallr," in most other languages there has been a change in signification. In English the word "snell" means early to have gone out seems to be well preserved and thus a "Timmerman" or a "Zimmerman" is a man , who , handles . wooden ma- terial for the purpose of constructing something out of it, a carpenter. "Zimmer" "'is. the High German form of the word, "timmer," the Low Ger- man or Dutch. This is-a result of a phenomenon of language .develop- ment known as the Second German Sound Shift. This movement "is thought to have started in Bavaria or Tyrol during the seventh century and it spread - with diminishing force and " thoroughness until it struck a line which passes near the cities of Cologne and Berlin. One of the marks of this change was that in High German an initial, "t". was' changed into a ."ts" sound, represent- ed at first by a "z" .willf.,Wik at- of use, but it lingers on in Scotch' di- alect in the sense of , "keen, sharp," apparently usually referring to the weather. Thus, in the fourth verse of Robert Burn's poem, "To a Mouse on Turning Her up in Her Nest with the Plow" there occur the two lines, "On! bleak' December's winds en- suin, Baith snell in keen!" Here, perhaps the word would be best translated into modern English as "bitter." In German, the word came" to take on the meaning of "quick,' "swift" as it also . has in Holland Dutch. "Schnell" is the High Ger- man and literary form, while "snell" is' Low German and also .Holland Dutch. Thus the most famous of the Snells was Willebrord Snell, usually known as Snellius, a noted Holland' Dutch mathematician and astrono tached, then by a plain con- men of the first quarter of the sev-

nection 3with the names ?

man" and "Zimmerman," however, it Is well to remember that, as has been noted in' Mencken's "American. Lan- guage," the inhabitants of America were very intoler, ishal

eign names, Thus the Enghsh .. rd ev en the Dutch officials, '' of" Colonial New York, whenever they encoun,sr. ed a "Zimmerman" were more than apt to transform him into a "Tim- merman" or even a "Timberman." Thus a man might sign .. himself "Zimmerman" "and still he officially a "Timmerman." Hence it is that the name "Zimmerman" is quite certain' to be of High German origin, but, on , the contrary, "Timmerman," may be the modern representative of a noun originally Holland Dutch, Low Ger- man or High German.
