PATENT AXLES.

W. H. SAUNDERS,

Manufacturer of

PATENT, HALF PATENT and TAPER

AXLES FOR CARRIAGES

HASTINGS, (ON THE HUDSON RIVER,) NEW-YORK.

HAVING reason to believe that carriage axles greatly inferior to those made by him are frequently substituted for, and represented as, axles of his make, begs to notify the public, that all axles made by him are marked on the shaft "Saunders Best," or on the bearing, "Saunders' Patent," and that axles represented as made by him, and NOT so marked, are usually poor imitations, fabricated from inferior, low-priced iron, are of wretched workmanship, dangerous to use, and give constant trouble : there- fore, gentlemen in purchasing or ordering carriages, should, from regard to their own comfort and safety, give particular attention to the character of the axles; besides which, the cost of the carriage is affected in but a trifling degree by the difference in price between the best and common axles.

The following testimonial, with which W. H. Saunders has been favored by the gentlemen whose names are appended thereto, certifies the estimation in which Saunders' Axles are held by the most respectable carriage makers in New-York and its vicinity :-

NEW-YORK, April, 1852.

" The undersigned carriage makers, of New-York and vicinity, having for many years used axles of W. IT. Saunders' manufacture, for the best classes of carriages, recommend the same to the public. with full confi- dence, as the BEST CARRIAGE AXLES MADE IN THE UNITED STATES, and superior to any imported.

MAJOR THOMPSON, 27 Wooster-Street, WILLIAM RAFFERTY, 38 Canal Street, E. M. STRATTON, 108 Elizabeth·Street, THOMAS DURNING, Yorkville.

W. H. S. was the original introducer of the favorite Mail Axle into the United States, and its first manufacturer. He is also the author of every improvement on it, which has successfully stood the severe proof of Third Avenue practice. His patented improvements on the Mail Axle, after having been extensively tested, are superseding the older forms. His Patent Axles were preferred and used for the magnificent car- riages presented to the President of the United States and to the Hon. Daniel Webster; and have always been awarded the first premium when exhibited for com- petition, as was the case at the last State Fair at Rochester, and at the last Exhibition of the American Institute at Castle Garden.

Gentlemen can easily protect themselves against suspected fraud, by furnishing their own axles, which may be ordered to suit, or purchased from any of the above named, or any other respectabie carriage makers ; from Messrs. SMITH, VAN HORN & Co., 70 Beekman-street, Mr. J. P. JUBE, 83 Bowery; or at the Factory a. Hastings, on the Hudson River, New-York,
