CLINTON COUNTY,
FOR 1878.
1878. Wiggins & McKillop, Printers, Wellsville, O. Directory Office, Columbus, O.
Clinton County Historical.
Clinton county was organized in the year 1810. The terri- tory now within the limits of the county was originally parts of Warren and Highland, being part of the land that was re- served to reward the soldiers of the Revolutionary war, and known as the military lands. The county was named after Governor Clinton, of New York, Vice-President of the United States. The county contains about four hundred square miles of land. The soil, in most parts, is a black loam, usually several feet deep, on a stratum of clay, and in some places of sand or gravel. It is very fertile and well adapted to the pro- duction of wheat, oats, corn, grass and all kinds of vegetables. A small proportion of the land in the south-western part of the county is hilly,-the remainder level or gently undulating. The land is generally in a high state of cultivation, and the farms well improved.
Stock raising is extensively pursued in this county, and many fine droves of cattle, sheep and hogs are annually shipped to the various markets.
The principal streams of the county are Anderson's and Todd's Fork, Cowan's Creek, Cæsar's Creek, and the east fork of the Little Miami, all of which flow in a south-westerly di- rection, and are tributary to the Little Miami River.
Wilmington.
This is the seat of justice for Clinton county. The land upon which the town is located was donated to the county by David Faulkner and Joseph Doan. It was laid out by James McMannis in 1810 ; he had been appointed " Director " by the Court of Common Pleas, and his duties were to obtain titles to the land selected for the county seat and lay the same off in lots. The town had been named Clinton, then changed to Armenia, and again changed to Mt. Pleasant; and finally to Wilmington, from Wilmington, North Carolina. Wilmington of to-day has about 4,000 inhabitants, and is the centre of a large trade. It contains a number of fine business blocks and elegant private residences. The new town hall is a model of architecture and mechanical skill, and well suited to the pur- poses for which it was intended.
