Joseph Weiss, son of Heinrich, Jr., was born March 16, 1843. He was a tanner on the home- stead of his father up to 1904, at which time he rented the farm to his son, Owen H. M., who bought the homestead several years later and con- tinues to cultivate it. Mr. Weiss had followed the tanning business from 1856 until his retire- ment in 1904. In 1912 he located at Schnecks- ville, where his widowed daughter, Mrs. Harvey Werley also resides. He was married to Caro- line Werley and they are members of the Re- formed Church which Mr. Weiss served both as a deacon and elder.
ALVIN WEISS.
Charles Weiss, a native of Montgomery coun- ty, went to Northampton county and settled in the extreme upper end of the county on the "Mountain Road" and there three of his younger children were born. He was a stone-mason and lived to an advanced age. His wife was Eve Seider, and they had ten children: William, Jonas (lived at Ashland, Pa.), John (lived in Northampton county), Amos (was drowned), David, Daniel, Sallie and Rebecca. The last two were married to Nicholas Strohl, having married the second wife after the first had died ; after the second died, he married Lena Andreas. By the three wives he had 31 children. The ninth child of Mr. Weiss was Mrs. John An- drew, and tenth Mrs. Henry Beidelman.
William Weiss was born in Montgomery county, Pa., June 15, 1817. At an early age he went to Slatedale. He became a trustee of the original Methodist Church there, but later he united with the Evangelical Church, in which he

was a most active and useful member, serving as class-leader and exhorter. He also was active in the Sunday school work. He was a stone- mason by trade. His last years were spent at Walnutport with his daughter, Mrs. Martha Yehl, and there he died about 1900, aged 83 years. He was married to Salome Schleicher (born in Hei- delberg township, Oct. 19, 1818, and died Feb. 4, 1883). They had ten children: Jonas, Eve (married F. Sowders), Amos (was drowned when young), William ( died in the Civil War), Daniel, Henry, David, John, Lucy, and Martha (wife of Morris Davis).
Jonas Weiss, oldest son of William, was born in Washington township June 24, 1838, but he lived at Slatedale where he was a laborer. He married Sarah Dorward, a daughter of Phaon and Polly (Sensinger) Dorward, and they be- gan housekeeping in the house where the Weisses had lived and where he died May 15, 1905, aged 67 years. His widow continues to occupy the homestead, being regarded as a sacred place to her and their children, who were born there. He and family were members of the Evangelical Church at Slatedale, which he served as trustee many years; also as class-leader and exhorter. He was a trustee in 1881 when the present church was built. They had seven children: Mary (married W. P. Yoxtheimer), Alvin, Ida (married Francis Paules), Aaron (of Slatedale), Wesley (of Slatedale), Ella E. (married David Hughes), and Clara M. (married George F. Sechler, of Catasauqua).
Alvin Weiss, slate operator, and printer at Slatedale, was born there Jan. 25, 1868. At the age of 18 years he learned the printing trade with the Slatington News under the proprietor- ship of L. E. Schlauch, and later with Mohr & Schoenly. Then he filled a clerkship in the store of F. E. Shenton, at Slatedale for eleven years. After he learned the printing trade he established the first job office at Slatedale and he has carried on the printing business there to this time. While employed in the store he did his printing in the evening or during the night.
In April, 1902, Mr. Weiss and Henry H. Kern engaged in the slate business at Slatedale and they continued until Sept. of the same year when they admitted O. F. Kern into the partner- ship, and then they traded under the name of the Royal Blue Slate Co., which is a successful enterprise. Mr. Weiss is also a one-fourth owner of the Highland Slate Co. He was one of the organizers of the Royal Store Company in Oc- tober, 1909. In 1909 he assisted in organizing the Slatedale Rural Telephone Co. and he has since served the company as its president. He
resides on Grant street in Slatedale, in a modern residence which he erected in 1910.
He was married on Thanksgiving Day, 1909, to Emma C. Walp, a daughter of Reuben and Louisa (Stem) Walp. They are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Slatedale and he serves the church in various offices. He has been superintendent of its Sunday school since 1890. Mr. Weiss is a moral force in Slatedale and its vicinity where he is respected and es- teemed. His material success is considered of great consequence by those who know him best and honor him for his uprightness of character and for his liberality in the cause of Christianity.
WENNER FAMILY.
Jacob Wenner, the progenitor of the Wenner family in Lehigh county, emigrated from Alsace at the age of forty-three years, with his wife, Magdalena, two sons, Jacob and George, and two daughters, Eva and Magdalena, arriving at Philadelphia, Sept. 18, 1773, and on the 28th of that month left for Northampton county, with his wife and two daughters. He settled in White- hall township on property owned by Judge Rhoads, near what is now known as Kratzer's schoolhouse. His second wife, Elizabeth, widow of Nicholas Wolf, survived him at his death on Nov. 27, 1802.
Jacob, his elder son, and his wife, Anna Maria, were indentured to John Hall, of Maryland. After serving this indenture, they settled in Long- swamp township, Berks county, where he died about 1792. His descendants moved to the west- ern part of the state.
Eva, the elder daughter, was married to Andrew Hotz ( Hoats), of Heidelberg township, and Magdalena to David Meyer, of the same township.
George Wenner, the younger son of Jacob, was born Dec. 21, 1756. He also was inden- tured, to Joshua Dudley, of Evesham township, Burlington county, West Jersey. He served until of age, when he left for his parental home in Northampton, where he enlisted in Captain Reitz's company of associators. After the revo- lution he purchased 126 acres of land in White- hall township, now South Whitehall, at what is now Wennersville, where he died Sept. 12, 1833. His wife, Eva Kummel, was born Aug. 13, 1763, and died Feb. 28, 1833. They are buried in the Allentown cemetery. They had seven children: George, Catharine, William, John, Jacob, Salome and Jonathan.
George, the eldest son, was born April 23, 1787, and died Oct. 27, 1837. He removed from South Whitehall to Salisbury, where he carried on farming until his death. He. married Anna

Shiffert, who was born Dec. 27, 1788, and died March 24, 1860. They had nine children : Mrs. Esther Butz; Mrs. Lucy A. Wickert; Saphan ; George; Peter; Marietta, died young; Mrs. Clarissa Schmoyer; Lydia, married, first, Joseph Keiper, and second, William Thompson, and Sophia, married Richard Rickert.
Saphan Wenner had a son, George, who had a daughter, Bertha, now residing at Phillips- burg, N. J.
George Wenner was born April 1, 1817, and died Sept. 10, 1878. He married Mary Unangst and had four children: Rev. George, Lutheran minister in New York City, and now president of the New York Synod, who married a daughter of Peter Cooper; Uriah, a lawyer in Salt Lake City; William, and Ida.
Peter Wenner was born March 2, 1821, and educated in the schools of Salisbury town- ship. He was reared on the farm, and remained there until after his father's decease, when he located at Allentown and entered the dry goods store of Joshua Schnurman. Afterward he en- gaged in the general store business for himself at Eighth and Hamilton streets, and later followed butchering with the Kramer family. He was one of the first members of the Allentown Cornet Band, and at the time of the great fire was an active fireman. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church, and of Allen Lodge, No. 71, I. O. O. F. He married Maria, daughter of Charles and Julianna (Miller) Kramer. She was born Aug. 16, 1827, and died Oct. 19, 1910. They had seven children: Sarah, married Frank W. Weil and had children: George P., Carrie H., Lizzie, William, Robert and Mabel; Chas. K., who had children: Thomas C. and Florence ; Parke B .; Robert T., who has one son, Robert ; Edgar F., has children; Harry P., Marie E. and Ruth; Thomas P., and Harry C.
THOMAS P. WENNER, son of Peter, was born in Allentown, July 30, 1861. He was educated in the schools of the city and graduated from the high school in 1878. He followed the mercantile business for some years ; was connected with the school board since 1892, and officiated as secre- tary from 1900. He is a member of Lehigh Lodge of Odd Fellows, No. 83; Sons of the American Revolution, and Lehigh County His- torical Society. He married Alice H., daughter of Capt. Abraham Shaffer and Sarah Hausman, his wife, of Reading. They have two children : Ralph S. and Margery S. They are members of St. John's Lutheran church.
William Wenner, second son of George, Sr., was born Feb. 19, 1792, and died Jan. 22, 1865. He settled on the old homestead and farmed a portion of the land. He married Elizabeth
Strauss, born June 26, 1796, died May 25, 1853, and they had ten children: Reuben; Judith, married John Huffort; Lydia, married Levi Guth; Sarah, married Gideon Guth; William ; Edward; Solomon; Mrs. Owen Bortz; Eliza, married Manasses Butz, and Henry S. He married a second wife, Catharine Nonnemaker, born Dec. 9, 1791, died Oct. 24, 1884, by whom he had no children.
Reuben Wenner, the eldest son of William, was born June 11, 1815, and died Dec. 25, 1862. He was a farmer in South Whitehall, and mar- ried Rebecca, a daughter of George and Salome (Newhard) Yundt. She was born Feb. 1, 1815, and died Jan. 12, 1863. They had six children : Tilghman, Francis, Levi, Thomas, George and Eliza.
Tilghman Wenner, eldest son of Reuben, was born Jan. 24, 1838. He settled at Frankfort, Ind., married Eliza Bare, and had ten children: George A., Zenobia E., Sylvester F., Ida, Wil- liam H., Annie M., Maggie B., Rebecca M., Paul E. and Pearl J. Frances and Levi, Tilgh- man's brothers, removed to Marshall county, Ind. George had two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Henninger and Mrs. Ellen Romig.
Thomas Wenner, son of Reuben, was born at Wennersville, July 3, 1840. He engaged in the farming implement business at Wennersville in 1870, where he had a large and lucrative trade for thirty years. He died Oct. 22, 1900, and the business was continued by his estate for three years. He was a member of the German Baptist Church, at Wennersville, where he is buried. He married Cecilia Guth, and had fifteen chil- dren : Elmer, of Wilkes-Barre; Clinton, Willis and Thomas, of Catasauqua; Allen, of Emaus; Mervin, of Allentown; Chester P .; Lizzie, married Wm. Newhard; Meda, married Llewel- lyn Newhard; Lena, married Geo. Keck; Re- becca, married Wm. Masters; Elda, married John L. Yeager; Sadie, married Herbert Schmoyer; Jerome and another, who both died young ..
CHESTER P. WENNER, son of Thomas, a dealer in farming implements and a builder and repairer of machinery at Wennersville, was born in the village Aug. 7, 1880. He worked on the farm and assisted his father in the implement business from 1893 to 1900, and carried it on for three years for the benefit of his father's estate, when he purchased it and conducted it for himself. His trade extends throughout Lehigh and adjacent counties. In 1903 he sold a Foss gasoline engine, which was the first sold in Le- high county, and he has since sold about 500. In 1904 he purchased Tilghman Sherer's prop- erty, containing two acres, and there in 1905 he

built a two-story machine shop, thirty by fifty feet, and in 1907 he purchased the old Baptist church property, which he converted into a ware- house, and in 1912 he purchased the property, where his father had conducted business for many years. He occupies a floor space covering altogether 8,000 square feet. He is connected with the South Whitehall Beneficial Society, and the Cedarville Lutheran congregation. He mar- ried Feb. 2, 1902, Katie A., daughter of John and Catharine (Miller) Miller, of Germany, and they have three children: John Thomas, Mary Ellen and Dorothy Pauline.
William Wenner, second son of William, was born Sept. 5, 1824, and died May 28, 1894, at Tiffin, O. He married Mary Stopp and had five children: Oscar, Edward, William, Ella and Aggie.
Edward Wenner, the third son of William, was born Feb. 6, 1826, and afterward moved to Tiffin, O. He married Susan Thompson, who was born Aug. 31, 1836, and died Jan. 20, 1902. They had three children: William E., born 1859, died 1867; Henry L., married Emma Huss, and Ralph J., born 1870, died 1900, mar- ried Della Hollinger.
Solomon Wenner, a twin brother of Edward, was born Feb. 6, 1826, and died Jan. 21, 1899. He lived in Lower Macungie. He had six chil- dren : Mrs. David Kocher, Mrs. Amanda Hinkel, Lewis F., Allen, Oscar and Victor W.
Henry S. Wenner, youngest son of William, was born June 10, 1832, and died April 10, 1889, at Tiffin, O. He married Sarah Kaull, and had six children: Lydia S., Ida M., Francis W., Alpheus, Fred L., and Charles L.
John Wenner, third son of George, Sr., was born Sept. 23, 1794, and died May 14, 1852. He resided on a farm he purchased from John Henninger near the homestead. He married Magdalena Marcks. She was born Feb. 3, 1797, and died Dec. 20, 1858. They had three sons: Charles, Peter and Ephraim.
Charles Wenner, son of John, was born Feb. 20, 1820, and died Dec. 27, 1879. He was mar- ried to Judith Gammer, and had seven children: Maria J., married Alfred J. Koch ;. Polly A., married Henry Kuhns; Arabella C., married Matthias Bortz; Melissa, married Wm. H. Reichard; Elemina, married Tilghman Stettler ; John, born 1847, died 1871, and Charles E.
Charles E. Wenner, son of Charles, of South Whitehall, was born April 5, 1850. He was a miller for five years at the Bortz mill, owned by his father and in 1875 began farming a sev- enty-seven-acre tract. In 1873, he married Emma E., daughter of Wm. K. and Helena (Schmoyer) Levan, of Lower Macungie, and
had seven children: Charles, Jr., of Crackers- port, a section foreman on the C. & F. R. R., and married to Ida Haas; John F., of Allentown; Anna, died at age of nineteen years; Howard, of Mechanicsville, who conducts a milk busi- ness, married Helen Albright and has children: Verna and Ida; Edna, married Harry Weidner; Lloyd, married Florence Baer, and Emma.
Ephraim Wenner, son of John, was born in 1822, and died in 1887. He married Levina, daughter of Isaac Haines, who was born in 1827, and died in 1908. They had eight children : Isabella V., married Silas S. Dubbs; John F .; Dr. Geo. V .; Rosa M., married Dr. Tilghman D. Koons; Dr. Alfred J .; Hiram S., of Chicago; Caroline E., married Geo. W. Carson, and A. H. Ellena. John F., son of Ephraim, was born Sept. 5, 1853. Since 1909 he has been cashier of the Allentown National Bank. Dr. George V. died at Milford, in New Jersey, July 19, 1904, aged thirty-six years.
Peter Wenner, the third son of John, was a carpenter and farmer in South Whitehall, where he owned two farms on one of which he lived, near Wennersville. He was a school director and township supervisor, and in the early fifties was one of the organizers of the South Whitehall Sons and Daughters of Temperance, No. 391, of Crackersport. He was a deacon, elder and trus- tee, of the Jordan Lutheran church, and died Aug. 22, 1885. He married Ellemina, daughter of Jeremiah Trexler, and had seven children : Amanda M., married Phaon Hammel; John Phaon, born 1847, died 1911, married Emma M. Stettler, and had four children : Edgar J .; Mamie R .; John J. and Elmer S .; George A., of Cetronia; Emmelina E., married Frank Faust ; Rebecca C., married Chester Newhard ; Peter J. F., and Clara M. married Levi Haas.
PETER J. F. WENNER, son of Peter, was born May 11, 1860, in South Whitehall. He was educated in the public school and Muhlenberg College, and at the age of twenty years began to teach school and taught in the South White- hall and Knappenberger buildings. He began farming in 1890 on an eighteen-acre tract, formerly the Jonas Rauch homestead. He was county auditor for two terms from 1905 to 1911; also township assessor for eighteen continuous years, a larger period than any other of this town- ship. He was prominently identified with Sun- day school work, served as a teacher many years and officiated as superintendent of the Crackers- port Union Sunday school from 1885 to 1900. He is a member of Guthsville Camp, No. 378, P. O. S. of A, and in politics is a Democrat.

man. They have four children: Edna H., mar- ried Raymond Wright, and has a daughter, Hilda W .; Hattie H .; ; Lottie H., and Naomi H.
Jacob Wenner, fourth son of George, Sr., was born Dec. 4, 1797, and died April 20, 1880. His wife, Lydia Hiskey, was born Feb. 12, 1799, and died April 11, 1861. They had eight chil- dren: James, born 1819; Henrietta, born 1820, married Mr. Hunsberger; Edwin, born 1822; Margaret, born 1823, married Jonas Bastian; Jacob, born 1824; Lydia H., born 1831; Maria A., born 1832, and Angelina, born 1837, married John Reinhard.
Edwin was born Feb. 16, 1822, and died Jan. 19, 1881. He married Leah Weber and had four children: William, of Emaus, whose sons are V. C. and Howard; Ellen, Laura and Ellemina. Jacob was born Sept. 16, 1825, and died Jan. 12, 1863. He married Judith Danner, and had three children: Wilson, Lesher and Elizabeth, married J. S. Iobst, of Emaus. James was born July 20, 1819, and died Jan. 12, 1874. His wife, Marietta, was born June 15, 1824, and died Nov. 19, 1873, and they had eight children: Milton, Mrs. Maria Klotz, Allen, Mrs. Lydia Rabenold, Lesher, Mrs. Jeretta Hartman, Mrs. Kate Shankweiler and L. Theodore.
Jonathan Wenner, the fifth and youngest son of George, Sr., was born Aug. 21, 1807, and died Feb. 6, 1884. He married Judith Kuhns, who was born Sept. 2, 1810, and died Dec. 28, 1891. They had six children: Stephen, Jonas, William, Mrs. Angeline Jarrett, Mrs. Philip Reinhard and Mary.
Catharine Wenner, the second child and eldest daughter of George, Sr., was born April 12, 1790, and died Oct. 4, 1864. She married Henry Gackenbach, and had children: Charles and Reuben. She married a second husband, Jona- than Butz, and had children: Daniel and Levi.
Salome Wenner, the second daughter of George, Sr., was born Dec. 17, 1799, and died Aug. 4, 1847. She married Peter Romig, of North Whitehall.
WENTZ FAMILY.
William H. Wentz, proprietor of the Majes- tic Theatre, of Catasauqua, represents one of the old and honored families of eastern Pennsylvania. He traces his line of descent to Johann Jost Wentz, who was born in the town of Beerfelden, Hessen Darmstadt, German, on Dec. 13, 1749, and died at Berlinsville, Northampton county, Pa., on May 22, 1812, aged 62 years, 5 months and 9 days. His wife, Ann Elizabeth Horn Wentz, died at Berlinsville on Nov. 11, 1845, aged 96 years, 11 months and 18 days. They
had the following children: John Peter, born at Beerfelden on March 9, 1770; Barbara, born at Beerfelden in the year 1772, died during the sum- mer of 1773; Jacob, born in Upper Milford township, Northampton county (now Lehigh county ) Pa., on Aug. 2, 1777 ; John George, born in Upper Milford township on April 11, 1778; Magdeline, born in Upper Milford township on Nov. 21, 1781, was married to Peter Masters, in Lehigh township, Northampton county, Pa., in 1803, and died at Berlinsville, Northampton county, Pa., on April 30, 1873; John, born in Upper Milford township on July 19, 1784; Eliza- beth, born in Upper Milford township on Dec. 25, 1788, was married to Ira Rood in the town of Chenango (now Kirkwood), Broome county, New York, on Jan. 22, 1805, died at Bingham- ton, N. Y., on Aug. 31, 1874; William, born in Upper Milford township on Sept. 5, 1789.
Jacob Wentz, second son of Johann Jost Wentz, was born in Upper Milford township, Northampton county (now Lehigh county), Pa., on Aug. 21, 1777, married Catherine Leibenguth in Lehigh township, Northampton county, Pa., May 6, 1800. One male child was the result of this marriage, which died with its mother at its birth in December, 1800.
Jacob Wentz married his second wife, Magda- line Kieffer, in Lehigh township, on April 12, 1801. Following are their children: Catherine, married Jonas Leibenguth on Oct. 6, 1822; Jacob; John; Sarah, married to Joseph Lessly in 1827; Elizabeth, married to John Young in 1825; Joseph; Polly, married to Jacob Easterday in 1831 ; Rebecca, married to Joseph Young in 1834; Joel; Lydia, married to Reuben Leibenguth in 1839; Levi; Monroe. Magdeline Kieffer Wentz, the mother of this family, died in Lehigh town- ship on March 2, 1852.
Jacob Wentz married his third wife, Susan Heil, near Cherryville, Northampton county, Pa., on Nov. 29, 1857, he being then eighty years of age. His occupation was by trade a cooper, which he followed during his younger years, but the most of his time was given to farming. In 1834 he moved to Kuntz Ford, and took charge of three locks on the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Com- pany's canal, and opened a grocery, feed and pro- vision store for the accommodation of boatmen. His death occurred near Cherryville, Northamp- ton county, on Jan. 15, 1868. His age was 90 years, 4 months and 24 days. Susan Heil Wentz died near Cherryville on Aug. 9, 1881.
Jacob Wentz, oldest son of Jacob Wentz, first, was born in Lehigh township, Northampton county, on Dec. 29, 1803. Married Catherine Berlin at Berlinsville, Northampton county, on Nov. 14, 1824. Following are their children:

Bryfogle in 1872; David. Cather- ine Berlin Wentz, the mother of this family, died in Lehigh township on May 2, 1853. Jacob Wentz married his second wife, Lucy Ann Easter- day, in Lehigh township, on May 9, 1857. Fol- lowing are their children: Robert; John; Levi; Rebecca; Henry; George; Anna. Jacob Wentz, head of this family, died at his father's old home- stead, about one mile from Cherryville, toward Berlinville, on April 1, 1881. His principal oc- cupation was farming. Lucy Ann Wentz, widow of Jacob, 2d, lies buried at Cherryville, Pa.
Joel, fourth son of Jacob 2d, was born in Le- high township, Northampton county, Pa., on March 28, 1832, and died March 19, 1895. Married Rebecca Snyder at Weissport, Carbon county, Pa., on Dec. 8, 1860. He was a wheel- wright by trade. Following are their children: Catherine Elizabeth, born at Weissport on Nov. II, 1861 ; William Henry, born at Weissport, on August 8, 1863; Wesley Albright, born at Weissport on Mar. 4, 1865 ; George Albert, born at Weissport on April 13, 1867; Edward Lewis, born at Weissport on Jan. 14, 1869, died 1892; Ellen, born at Weissport on Dec. 14, 1870; Sam- uel Amandus, born at Weissport on April 22, 1873, died Feb. 27, 1889; John, born at Weiss- port on Oct. 15, 1876; Allart, born at Weissport on April 13, 1878 ; Emma Jane, born at Weissport on August 7, 1880; Mary Ann, born at Weiss- port on Dec. 15, 1884.
WILLIAM WENTZ, son of Joel, was born at Weissport, Pa., Aug. 8, 1863. He was educated in the public schools. At the age of fifteen he began to support himself ; at the age of seventeen he learned the art of painting, which he followed for a period of seventeen years. In 1897 he was engaged as teamster in the baking business at Par- ryville and three years later became the proprie- tor of the bakery. In 1908 he came to Catasau- qua and built the Majestic Theatre, which soon became the most popular form of amusement in that thriving borough. So large became the pat- ronage that he was compelled to enlarge it three times within this short period. He also conducts the Bijou theatre. Both of these theatres are well patronized and are famed for their fine line of pictures. He takes a special interest in public improvements and has fitted out a place for the children and young folks to play baseball and basketball and during winter keeps a skating pond. Mr. Wentz takes an interest in matters pertain- ing to the welfare of the borough and county and
at the recent election was a candidate for council- man on the Washington party ticket. The flatter- ing vote which he received attests to his popular- ity. He had undertaken to raise one thousand dollars for the Old Home Week at Catasauqua in 1914, and he was successful in his efforts. He was married in 1886 to Annie L. Young, a daugh- ter of George W. Young, to them are born the following children : Charles W .; Arthur L .; Melvin E .; Noel Y .; and Adrin. Mr. and Mrs. Wentz and family are faithful and devoted mem- bers of the Evangelical church of Catasauqua.
