RHOADS FAMILY.


The ancestor of this family was Peter Rhoads, the son of Daniel Roth, a native of Switzerland, who arrived in America on Aug. 28, 1733. He settled in Whitehall township, where he died in April, 1737. His widow, Anna Margaret, died Feb. 25, 1757.


Peter Rhoads was born in April, 1737, in the same hour in which his father died. He was educated among the Quakers and changed the spelling of his name to Rhoads. He returned to Whitehall in 1761 and in 1762 located in Al- lentown, where he kept a general store at 107 North Seventh street from 1768 to 1814. He was a member of the Constitutional Conventions of 1776 and 1790, of the Committee of Safety in 1776 and 1777, of the Assembly from 1778 to 1781, president judge of Northampton county from 1784 to 1791, associate judge from 1791 to 1812 and associate judge in Lehigh county from 1812 to 1814. He was the first burgess of Allen- town in 1811. A full account of his life appears on page 161 of the first volume. He died Dec. 18, 1814. Judge Rhoads married, Nov. 23, 1762, Sa- bina Kohler, daughter of Jacob Kohler, of Egypt, Whitehall township. She was born Jan. 14, 1744, and died Aug. 8, 1785. He married (sec- ond) April 12, 1789, Eve Catharine, widow of John Miller, a sister of his first wife. She was born in 1747 and died Aug. 26, 1825. He had eight children, all by the first wife. Four of these children died young, namely : a son in 1764; Elizabeth, born 1767, died 1768; Adam, born and died in 1775; and Daniel, born and died in 1783. The four children who survived were: George, Peter, John, and Catharine.

I. George Rhoads was born Jan. 24, 1769. He assisted his father in the store and became a carpenter and cabinet-maker. He was town clerk of the borough in 1811 and in 1812 a member of the first grand jury. In 1810, he opened a hotel at Seventh and Linden streets and was at this time also lieutenant-colonel in the militia. He was clerk of the county com- missioners from 1813 to 1818, and from 1827 to 1832, and county treasurer in 1841. He was a justice of the peace from 1835 to 1840 and had his office at 532 Hamilton street. He died at Allentown, Sept. 12, 1851. He married, in 1789, Christianna Ealer, who was born March 9, 1769, and died March 24, 1862. They had six children: Sarah; Catharine; Elizabeth ; Jos- eph E., died young; Henrietta; and Josiah.


Catharine Rhoads was born Sept. 28, 1793, and died April 3, 1883. She married, March 27, 1814, John Wilson, born July 9, 1789, died March 2, 1864. He kept a store in Allentown for many years, located on Centre Square, and in later years removed to Bethlehem. They had ten children :


I. Emily M., born 1814, died 1886, married Tilghman Rupp, born 1812, died 1859, and had five children : Henry W. Rupp, of Bailey, Banks & Biddle Co., Philadelphia, who married Ellen M. Schropp and had children : Henry G. G., born 1868, died 1896, and Mrs. Herbert Leonard; Mary E., born 1842, died 1867, married William T. Carver ; Fanny, mar- ried Theodore Speir; Theodore T., born 1855, died 1856; and William.


2. James M. Wilson, born Aug. 17, 1816, died Oct. 7, 1875, married Susan Meeker and had two children: Mary M., wife of Thomas K. Crader; and Margaret, wife of Henry Mertz.


3. Maria Henrietta, born 1819, died 1895, married William W. Selfridge and had children : Major Alex. W. Selfridge, Mrs. Catharine Mac- Farlane and Theodore. Major Selfridge had two children: William W., died Jan. 2, 1895; and Jessie, died in London, England, July 16, 1896, aged 22 years.


4. John Josiah Wilson, born Jan. 29, 1821, died April 2, 1879.


5. William R. Wilson, born Jan. 29, 1821, died May 26, 1866. He married, in 1852, in Salisbury, N. C., Sarah A. F. Slater, and had two sons: John and William.


6. Catharine S., born July 25, 1823, died Aug. 21, 1893.


7. Anne E., born Dec. 16, 1825, died June 15, 1905.


8. Frances C., born 1828, died 1837.


9. Thomas, who resided in Philadelphia.


10. Henry A., born April 1, 1833, died Sept. 29, 1880.


Elizabeth Rhoads, third daughter of George, was born Nov. 26, 1796, and died March 27, 1829. She married, June 12, 1817, George Haberacker, who was born May 12, 1792, and died Jan. 2, 1866. He kept the Court House Hotel, now the Hamilton, from 1825 to 1855, and also the hotel where the Allen now stands. He was a soldier in the War of 1812, county treasurer, 1838 to 1841; a member of town council in 1833, and of the first school board in 1834. He was a member of Jordan Lodge, No. 151, F. & A. M. They had six children : William and George, died in infancy; Henry J., born Sept. 13, 1817, died April 17, 1890, who married Hannah Mohr and had children: Alice E., born 1851, died 1889, wife of Owen

He was educated in the schools at Allentown and at Franklin College, Lancaster, where he gradu- ated as a member of the first class in 1789. He became a surveyor and in 1821 was appointed deputy surveyor of the county. Upon the organ- ization of the Northampton Bank in 1814, he was elected president and continued as such until his death in 1836. In 1822, he was a candidate for Congress on the Whig ticket. He was many years the representative of Mrs. Mary Livings- ton, owner of one-third of Allentown, in her real estate transactions, and was trustee of the Allen- town Academy. He died at his residence, 109 North Seventh street, July 8, 1836, and was buried in the old Allentown cemetery. He mar- ried Barbara, daughter of George Graff. She

He died at the latter place on Aug. 28, 1876. He married, April 3, 1831, Keren H., daughter of Peter Newhard. She was born July 25, 1810, and died Oct. 7, 1880. They had ten children :

They were members of Zion Re- formed church, and had seven children: Maria Anne, born May 22, 1802, died young; Edward, born March 11, 1804, died May 18, 1833; Caro- line C., born Aug. 7, 1808, died Jan. 13, 1867; Juliana, born Feb. 7, 1806, died Aug. 10, 1887; Stephen ; Maria B., born Nov. 19, 1812, died March 3, 1884; and Augustus P., born March 6, 1816, died July 31, 1841.


Stephen Rhoads, son of Peter, Jr., was born in Allentown, May 27, 1810. He was educated in John Ryan's English school and the Allen- town Academy, and after assisting his father in his business for some years devoted his time to the cultivation of the family farm of 130 acres, em- bracing what is now Clifford Park, and the Le-


1857 and at the outbreak of the Civil War be- came first lieutenant of Co. I, First Penna., which was mustered into the United States serv- ice on April 20, 1861. On Aug. 30, 1861, he was elected captain of Co. B, 47th Penna., and served until mustered out at Berryville, Va., Sept. 18, 1864. He participated in the battles of Pocotaligo, St. John's Bluff, Munsura Plains, Yellow Bayou, Berryville, and Bunker's Hill, in engagements in the Shenandoah Valley and was long stationed at Key West, Fla. He removed to Ohio after the war, living first at West Lodi, Seneca county, where he was storekeeper and. postmaster, and later at Defiance, Ohio, where he died, Aug. 19, 1914, aged 80 years. He was a member of the G. A. R., and the Union Vet- eran Legion. He married, Dec. 23, 1856,

Brittain, of Toledo, Ohio, and had children: Hazen G., Paul, and Nellie M .; Nellie M., born 1865, died 1893, married Thomas E. Karr and had one son, Alvin P. Karr, and Cora L., who married Edwin J. Finn and had children : Layton, Lloyd, Walter, and Roy.


3. Mary A. B., born April 20, 1836, died April 22, 1870, married, Oct. 9, 1866, Jonas Mest, and had one son, George S. Mest, born Feb. 19, 1869, died May 30, 1905, who married Sadie Stull and had children : Earle G. J., Gerard S., and Grace.


4. Sarah C., married Wilson Lightcap and had children: George W., born 1859, died 1861; Jennie R .; Lizzie A., born 1862, died 1907; and Robert L., married Cora Clewell, and had children : Albert W., and Harriet.


5. Ellen L., born Aug. 8, 1839, died July 13, 1893, married Wm. F. Hendricks, born March 21, 1835, died Oct. 7, 1875, and had two chil- dren : Carrie A., married Edward N. Kroninger and had children : Miriam H., Paul H., Luther H., and Edward; and Edwin W. Hendricks, born Jan. 21, 1874, died April 20, 1895, a grad- uate of the Allentown high school, class of 1891.


6. Augustus G. Rhoads, born Nov. 14, 1842, died Sept. 28, 1862.


7. Lavinia J., born Feb. 24, 1845, died Nov. 26, 1883, married, Aug. 11, 1863, Tobias Kessler and had one son, Paul, born 1871, died 1875.


8. Senia S., born July 22, 1848, died July 28, 1903, married Charles Richter and had one son, Emery A., of Bellevue, Ohio, who married Ver- tie M. Noel, and has two children.


9. Edwin A. Rhoads, of North Whitehall, who married Alice J. Rabert and had five chil- dren : Carrie K., born 1890, died 1903 ; Frank S., Charles Alfred, born 1895, died 1904; Harry P., born 1901, died 1913; and Mary H.


IO. Alice S. Rhoads, youngest daughter of Stephen Rhoads, married Moses Roberts and had one son, Charles Rhoads Roberts.


CHARLES R. ROBERTS, only child of Moses and Alice S. (Rhoads) Roberts, was born in Allentown, but in childhood lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., Providence, R. I., and Massachusetts. His father, the son of Moses Roberts, Sr., was a na- tive of Essex county, New York, where he was born May 30, 1848, and from 1864 to 1910 was engaged in the manufacture of cut and wire nails. He also at one time manufactured rail- road spikes at the Allentown Iron Works. He died suddenly at his home at Allentown, Sept.


18, 1911. His paternal grandfather was Charles Noel Roberts, born 1793, died 1881, who mar- ried Emelie Menard, born Sept. 6, 1796, died Sept. 3, 1887, and who was a descendant of Louis Robert, who came to America in 1670. The Robert family is descended from Timard Robert, the son of Robert de Mure, who became cele- brated through his exploits in France about 980. Jean Robert was in 1289, one of the twelve coun- sellors of the Parliament of Philip the Fair, King of France. His sons were: Gui Robert, first bishop of Montauban, and Adhemar Robert, bishop of Lisieux, archbishop of Sens and car- dinal in 1342, whose nephew, Peter Robert, was treasurer of the finances of Charles VI, 1380 to 1422. His son, Peter Robert, Baron of Lignerac and de Noaielles, married Marguerite de Cosnac, and their son, Charles Robert, who married Philippe de Pelegrue, Lady of Puy-Gensac, had a son, Francois Robert, Baron de Lignerac, Sieg- neur de Fleaux, and Chevalier of the Order of the King in 1571, Captain of the Guard of Queen Isabeau D'Autriche, wife of Charles IX, Lieu- tenant of Upper Auvergne, Governor of Auril- lac, who died in 1613 and who married Catharine d'Hautefort: On the maternal side, Mr. Rob- erts is descended from Swiss and German Lehigh county families, including the Rhoads, Graff, Kohler, Diefenderfer, Mattern, Eckert, and Shankweiler families.


Mr. Roberts received the first five years of his education in the excellent schools of East Wey- mouth, Mass., where he ranked first in scholar- ship among all the school children in the town of 10,000 inhabitants. In September, 1887, he entered grammar school and graduated from the Allentown high school in 1892. Keenly interest- ed in history, literature and languages, he con- tinued these studies privately and while engaged in business life for the next few years in clerical positions with the Penna. Paint and Ochre Co. Consolidated Steel & Wire Co., and Phoenix Silk Manufacturing Company. In September, 1895, he was on the staff of the Providence Telegram, and in 1896 was in the wholesale house of Callender, McAuslan & Troup Co., of Providence, R. I. In 1896, he returned to Al- lentown, became interested in politics, was clerk of common council from 1902 to 1904, secretary of the Republican city committee and successfully conducted the literary end of the mayoralty cam- paign in 1902, and of the judicial campaign in 1903. On Aug. 15, 1904, he was appointed clerk in the Allentown postoffice. He was. one of the founders and the first secretary of the John Hay Republican Club. At the age of six- teen he became interested in local history and continued along this line until he had accumu-

lated a vast store of information and data on this section of the state. In 1903, he organized the Lehigh County Historical Society, which now has a membership of nearly 200, and has been its secretary continuously. He has written a number of papers on historical subjects, among them: "The Allen Family," "Lynford Lardner and Grouse Hall," "Pennsylvania Germans in Public Life in the Colonial Period," "Allentown in the Revolution," "Revolutionary Patriots of Allentown and Vicinity," etc., etc .; is the author of "History of Egypt Reformed Church," and of "Historic Homes in Lehigh County," which latter series of papers appeared in the Pennsyl- vania German Magazine; translator of the re- cords of Egypt Reformed church, 1734 to 1834, published in the Penna. Archives, Sixth Series, and editor-in-chief of the History of Lehigh County, published in 1914.


Mr. Roberts is a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution; Pennsylvania German Society, and a member of its executive commit- tee ; Bucks County Historical Society; third vice- president of the Pennsylvania Federation of His- torical Societies; historian of the Newhard fam- ily ; member and past master of Greenleaf Lodge, No. 561, F. & A. M .; P. H. P. of Allen R. A. Chapter, No. 203, and at present D. D. G. H. P. of the Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania for the counties of Lehigh, Northampton, Monroe, and Pike ; member of Allen Council, No. 23, R. & S. M .; Allen Commandery, No. 20, K. T .; Rajah Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S .; Constantine Lodge, No. 1189, I. O. O. F .; and the Lehigh Coun- try Club.


He is a member of St. John's Reformed church and a member of its choir for a number of years. In business life he was treasurer of the North Allentown Improvement Company, and is treas- urer of the Lehigh Valley Publishing Company. He resides at 520 North Sixth street, Allentown.


III. John Rhoads, third son of Peter, Sr., was born April 10, 1773, and died July 3, 1851, near Egypt. He lived in Allentown until 1812, when he moved to a 210-acre farm bought from his father, at Sherersville, which he sold in 1837 and removed to near Egypt, where he purchased a fine farm, on which cement has since been found in large quantities. He married, Jan. 7, 1794, Magdalena, daughter of George Graff. She was born March 5, 1775, and died Dec. 4, 1847. They had twelve children :


I. George, a school teacher in Whitehall town- ship before the adoption of the school system, who was born in 1794 and died Nov. 3, 1849, unmarried.


2. Maria, born July 2, 1796, died March 2, 1874, married, Oct. 6, 1816, Henry Roth, and had children: Lydia, Daniel H., Reuben, Solo- man, and Owen T. Roth.


3. Lydia, born Aug. 27, 1798, died May 21, 1875, married, Dec. 3, 1815, Conrad Leisenring, and had children: Mrs. Caroline Steckel, Mrs. Maria Fenstermacher, Catharine, Sarah A., Reu- ben, Mrs. Francesca Cole, Walter, Mrs. Ce- linda Daniels, Edward, Mrs. Abigail Laury, Mrs. Amelia Steckel, and Lydia B.


4. Louisa, born July 20, 1800, died March 22, 1872.


5. Sabina, born July 7, 1803, died Aug. 2, 1843.


6. Daniel J. Rhoads, born April 10, 1806,' died Dec. 3, 1889. He was many years a justice of the peace at Coplay. He married, Feb. 14, 1829, Hannah Kelchner, born Feb. 13, 1802, died April 15, 1860. He married (second) March 25, 1862, Mrs. Sarah ( Haas) Romig, born June 10, 1820, died Jan. 7, 1900.


Daniel and Hannah Rhoads had five children :


I. Erastus D. Rhoads, born Jan. 18, 1830, for many years organist and school teacher at Unionville, still lives there, aged 84 years. He married Esther Leh and had three children: Alice E., born 1849, died 1876, married Lewis F. Kuntz and had a daughter, Bertha; Sabina A., married Frances P. Semmel, and had chil- dren : Alverta, married Charles Peter ; Katie L., married Laurence F. Nadig; Annie, Eva and Herman, and Cora M. L. Rhoads, deceased.


2. Herman K. Rhoads, born 1831, died 1857, married Lydia Swartz. and had one son, Herman S., born and died in 1857.


3. Walter P. Rhoads, born Nov. 9, 1832, died March 25, 1899, married (first) Louisa Haaf, born 1838, died 1861, and (second), Aug. 31, 1862, Sarah A. Troxell, born Feb. 7, 1843, died Aug. 7, 1886. They had twelve children : Mag- dalena L., married (first) Edward Brown and had children: Elmer, Irvin, Clara, Minnie, and Lillie, and (second) Jacob Knoll and had chil- dren : Amy, Earle, Beatrice, Walter, and Bessie.

P., former chief of police of Allentown, who married Margaret Appel and has children: Lil- lian A., and Arthur J .; John H. Rhoads, fore- man at the Allentown Spinning Co., who mar- ried Minnie C. Sterner and had children: Wal- ter D., Alma M., Florence I., and Ida G .; Sarah R., born and died in 1869; George O., of Allen- town ; Milton P., of Oakland, Cal .; Eugene W., married Mary C. Bartels, and had children : Milton M., Sarah, and John; Richard S., mar- ried Mary A. Brian; Norman S., born and died

Owen Rhoads, youngest son of John, was born May 25, 1811, in Allentown. He located as a young man in Lower Milford, near Dillingers- ville, where he was one of the early school teach- ers, and became a prominent member of the Men- nonite Church. He died April 25, 1900, aged 88 years. He married, Jan. 26, 1837, Catharine Schantz, who was born Sept. 19, 1812, and died Feb. 19, 1864. They had six children: Lydia, born 1837, died 1901, married Isaac Oberholtzer ; Sarah, married George Schultz, formerly of Palm, now of East Greenville, and had two children: Henry and Mrs. Mary Laudenslager ; Maria M., born 1841, died 1864; Catharine, married Daniel B. Mohr and had children : Harry T., of Zionsville, who married Agnes Nonne- macher, and Rosa R., wife of William M. Schaeffer, of Allentown; Susanna, born 1849, died 1863; and John Rhoads, who married Sarah Schoenly and had five children: Emma, married Harvey Brunner; Alfred O., born 1882, died 1885 ; Cora S .; Ella M .; and Ida L., born 1891, died 1896. Mr. Rhoads now lives retired near Zionsville, and leases his fine farm near Dil- linger station.


IV. Catharine Rhoads, only daughter of Judge Rhoads, was born April 26, 1780, and died Dec. 25, 1817. She married, June 20, 1802, Jacob Blumer, son of Rev. Abraham Blumer. They had six children: Lucy A .; Camilla, married John Mohr; Alexander A .; Matilda, married Edmund D. Leisenring; Victor T .; and William H.


CHARLES RIBER.


Charles Riber, who for many years was a well- known silk manufacturer of Allentown, was a native of France, born at Sulz, Alsace-Lorraine, now part of the German Empire, Nov. 1, 1857.


Michael Riber, father of Charles, was a native of the same state, and there was engaged in the manufacturing of silk. Being a subject of the French Empire, he participated in the Franco- Prussian War, as a soldier of France, and at the fall of the Empire, he with his wife and five chil- dren, came to America, locating first at New York, where he followed the silk business, later


moving to Paterson, N. J., where he made his home and followed the same business, continuing there until his death. He is buried in the Holy Sepulchre cemetery at Paterson, N. J., having been a member of the Catholic Church, as are also his wife and children.


He married in his native country, Louisa Kus- ter, who bore him five children, viz: Charles, the subject of the sketch; Louisa, who married a Mr. John Gruter; Christina, who married Philip Yunker, of Paterson, a butcher; Catharine, who married John Bradley, of Paterson ; Rosina, who married Nicholas Sauer, a manufacturer of New York.
