CHARLES O. WENTZ.


Charles O. Wentz, chief engineer of the Emaus Silk Company, was born at Berlinsville, Lehigh township, Northampton county, Oct. 8, 1878. His grandfather was Jacob Wentz, who resided at Cherryville, Northampton county, where he followed farming all his life. Isaac Wentz was born in Northampton county in 1841. Having been educated in the public schools of his native place he became a teacher in the public schools at an early age and followed this profes- sion all his life in various places throughout his native county. He was a devoted member of the Evangelical Church. He died at Walnutport in 1895 and is buried at Berlinsville. He was married to Sarah, a daughter of John and Sarah (Rice) Heffelfinger. She died in 1907, aged 64 years and is buried at Berlinsville. They were the parents of the following children: William, a baker by trade, killed on the L. V. R. R., near Slatington; Ellen, married to Robert Roth, of Walnutport; Benjamin, wood carver, residing at Walnutport; Emma, died aged 17 years; John, of Slatington ; and Charles O.


Charles O. Wentz was educated in the public schools of his native place and at the age of eleven years he started to work in the School Slate factory at Slatington. Later, for a period of three years he shaved slate for Samuel Caskin and also was his foreman for several years. He was foreman of the American Slate Works for two years, also rigger and repairer of machinery for a number of years, and at various times engi- neer, being employed by this company for twelve years. Moving to Allentown he was employed as steam-fitter by W. H. Taylor & Co., and as machinist on the Eighth street bridge. On April 18, 1893 he became the chief engineer for the Emaus Silk Company, which position he now fills. He resides in his own home at 219 North Fifth street, Allentown. He is a member of the Mennonite Brethren in Christ church, in which he holds the office of trustee and class leader. In July, 1895, Mr. Wentz was married to Lizzie Yeahl, a daughter of Lewis and Martha (Weiss)

WERLEY FAMILY.


The Werley family is of French Huguenot descent and originally the name was spelled Werle. Sebastian Werley and his wife, Rosina Derr, accompanied by her brother, John Derr, emigrated to Pennsylvania before 1750 and set- tled on a farm in Allemangel, now Weisenberg township, where he built a house some distance from an Indian path which led to an Indian village, where the Holben mill dam is now sit- uated in Lynn township, and when the Indians passed, his wife would favor them occasionally with a loaf of bread, a kindness which was reci- procated by them. He took up large tracts of land in that vicinity. He had six children : John Nicholas, generally called "Hannickle," who was the eldest, born on the ocean; Michael ; Catharine, married to a Billman; Dewald, mar- ried to Miss Mumma; Valentine, generally call- ed "Feldi," who married a Miss George; Maria, who married a Snyder; and Rosina, who mar- ried Bernhard Kressly.


Nicholas, the eldest son of Sebastian, owned the land which afterward came to be owned by John Werly, Levi Weida, and Henry German. He had nine children: Michael; Andreas; Se- bastian, who married Lydia Bittner; Dewald, who married Molly Bittner ; Catharine, who mar- ried Jacob Hans; Maria, who married John Nich- olas Derr; Sarah, who married Jacob Bittner ; Rosina, who married Peter George; and Leah, who married Andreas Kline, an emigrant from Germany.


Michael, the eldest son of Nicholas, was mar- ried to a Miss Hans and settled on a farm which afterward came to be property of William D. Bear. He was enlisted in the English War of 1812-15, and upon his return he contracted an illness from which he died. He had five chil- dren: Joseph, who married first Catharine Bitt- ner and then Leah Grimm; Catharine, who mar- ried Peter Gildner; Jonathan, who married Maria or Polly Billman; Maria, married a Mr. Schaller and afterward a Mr. Kressly; and Daniel, who went to Wisconsin. Of these Jos- eph lived near the Lowhill Church, served as constable of Lowhill township and raised a large family of sons and daughters and Jonathan was a tailor, owned a farm near Claussville, and had eight children: John, Elias, Owen, Levi, Caro-


lina, the wife of William Bear; Kitty; Lydia, married Jefferson Haas; and Benjamin.


John Werley, the eldest son of Jonathan, the tailor, was a farmer of Lowhill, born in 1833, and died in 1907, and buried at Ziegel Church. He was married to Lucy Werley, a daughter of Henry, a son of Dewalt, of Sebastian; and they had five children: Edwin, married Sybilla Moy- er; Calvin; Mary, married (first time) John Fries; (second) David Herman; Rosa, married Morris Xander; and she died in 1910; Marga- ret, married William Botz.


CALVIN P. WERLEY, the second son of John, is a farmer of Weisenberg. He was born in Lowhill, July 28, 1854, and was there educated and brought up on a farm till twelve years old when his father moved to a farm of 150 acres in Weisenberg, which he had bought and there the son continued until 1883 and moved to Lowhill on the 100-acre farm of Joseph Slough which he cultivated for twenty-two years. In 1905 he re- turned to the homestead in Weisenberg and has carried on the farm till now. He has affiliated with the Castle No. 486, K. G. E., and has served as an election officer. In 1878 he was married to Louisa Moyer, daughter of William, of Weisenberg, and they had eleven children : Richard, died, 7 years old; Emma, married Ed- win Diehl; Stella, married William Kistler ; George, married Angelina Reitz; Flossie, mar- ried Albert Smith; Frederick; Morris; Lloyd ; Joyce; Hilda, and one died in infancy. Wil- liam Moyer, the father of Mrs. Werley, was married to Sarah Rabenold, daughter of Isaac, a farmer of Weisenberg. He died, in 1896, aged 71 years. They had sixteen children: Eureline, married L. Leiby ; Rufinas, married Emma Bitt- ner ; Levi, married Emma Kroninger, died when 25 years old; Sybilla, married Edwin Werley, second time, Peter A. Romig; Alfred, married Catharine Gehris; Frank, who went to Ohio; Louisa; Agnes, married Lloyd Huff; Benjamin, who went to Michigan; Albert, married Ma- tilda Faust ; Peter, married (1) to Alice Schmoy- er; (2) to a Miss Knappenberger; Ambrose, married Racy Ramer; Anna, married Wilson Dietrich ; Calvin, accidentally killed when fifteen years old ; Morris; and one died young.


Daniel Moyer, the grand-father of Mrs. Werley, was a farmer of Weisenberg, who on Aug. 9, 1807, married Magdalena Acker. They had seven children: Charles and James, who went to New York; William; Aaron, married (1) Julia Gehringer, (2) Helena Fritz; Mary, married Daniel Semmel; Judith, married a Saeg- er; and Amos, married a Baer.

to Julia Walbert, and they had twelve chil- dren: Sarah; Kitty Ann, married Jonas Shoe- maker; Amelia, married William Krause; Su- sanna, married Louis Adam; Levi; Moses ; Sam- uel; Frank; Hettie, married Jonas Buchman ; Clarissa, married (1) Samuel Oswald, (2) Jonas Ettinger ; Eliza, married Solomon Seip ; and Seniah.


Andreas, the second son of Nicholas, who was married to a Miss Haas, became possessed of the homestead, and he had eight children: Jacob, married Leah Weiss; Gideon, married Hettie Bachman; Elias; John, married Amelia Gordon ; Jonas, married Lucy Clauss; Maria, married John George; Sarah, married John Peter; and Lydia, married Jonas Bachman. The eldest son Jacob's children, were: Levi; Penrose; Edwin ; Mrs. Benneville Smith; and Mrs. Fritz; Gid- deon's were: Owen; Moses; Solomon, who went West; Annie, married John Hollenbach, and William ; Elias' were: Francis; and others; John had one son, James; Jonas had Alvin; Wilson and Lucy among others.


Sebastian, the third son of Nicholas, was mar- ried to Lydia Bittner, and had seven children: Stephen ; John, married a Miss Wagner; Elias ; Phaon ; Rebecca, married Daniel German ; Polly, married Daniel Kistler; and Fianna, also mar- ried Daniel German, after the decease of Re- becca. He lived in Weisenberg township and carried on farming and distilling.


Dewald, the fourth son of Nicholas, was a farmer and hotel-keeper, and had nine children: John; Daniel, of Allentown; and Jacob, of Schuylkill-Haven; Mrs. Crouse; Lucy Rabe- nold; Maria Heilman; Sallie Rebecca Grimm; and Catharine, married Henry German.


Michael, the second son of Sebastian, settled near the Weisenberg church and he had six children: Maria, married Henry Weiss; Ca- tharine, married Mr. John Harkman ; Michael, married Miss Kerschner; Magdalena, married Mr. Kistler; Abraham, married Barbara Hun- sicker, and Elizabeth, married Jacob Snyder.


Michael, the elder son of Michael, received a part of his father's farm and had two sons, Mi- chael and Daniel, and lived to a great age but nearly blind toward the end. Michael, the elder son, married Catharine Mosser, died in the prime of life and had ten children: Levi; Joseph; Wil- liam; Carolina, married Joseph Weiss; Mary, married Levi Weida; Sarah; Emeline; Kitty, married R. Hollenbach; Annie and Wilson, and Daniel, the younger son, married a widow named Hunsicker, but had no children.


Abraham, the younger son of Michael, lived to be very old on a part of the homestead, and


had nine children: Jacob, married Elizabeth Smith; Michael; Nathan; Jonas; Lydia, mar- ried Peter Weiss; Catharine, married Philip Kerschner ; Hettie, married Abraham Frey; Molly, died single; and Lucy.


Dewald, the third son of Sebastian, owned the farm on which the Sieberling church was erect- ed and he had eight children: Jacob; Abraham; Daniel; Henry; Nicholas; Magdalena, married a Muse; Sophia, married Thomas Grimm; and a son, who died in infancy. Abraham, married a Miss Boger, and had eight children: David, married Maria Everitt; Henry; William; Jack- son; Aaron; Fannie; Jane, and Mary. Henry also married a Miss Boger, and had the follow- ing children, among others: John; Henry; Stephen ; James; Lucy, married John Werley, son of Jonas; and Mrs. Kerschner. Nicholas married a Miss Buch and had eight children : Harrison ; Joshua; Daniel; Melinda; Sarah ; Eleanora, Carolina, and Clara.


Valentine "Feldi" the fourth son of Sebastian, had ten children: Christiana, married Andrew Bittner; Susanna, married John Shifferstein ; Elizabeth, married Jacob Zimmerman; Maria; Polly Schleicher ; Leah, married Jacob Walbert ; Sarah, single; Rebecca, died single; Samuel; Daniel, and Charles.


Samuel Werley, son of Valentine, the fourth son of Sebastian, was a farmer in Weisenberg township, married to Miss Smith, and had three children ; Jonas; Caroline, married Charles Gehringer ; and Racey, married Jeremiah Derr.


Jonas Werley, son of Samuel, was born Feb. 15, 1829. He died Dec. 11, 1906, and was buried at Allentown. He was a contractor and builder by occupation, employed a large number of men and erected many dwellings at a time at Allentown. He served as a school director from the Eighth ward for one term. Before moving to Allentown in 1869 he was a member of Sieber- lingsville Church and served on the vestry. He was married to Maria Brobst, born Aug. 10, 1830, and died Nov. 6, 1907. They had six chil- dren: Phaon, born Feb. 20, 1852; Jonas, born Aug. 19, 1853; Ellamanda, born Sept. 9, 1855; Hiram A., born March 10, 1858; Josiah M., born March 26, 1862; Elizabeth, born Aug. 26, 1865, died May 15, 1866.


Josiah M. Werley, son of Jonas, cigar manu- facturer at Allentown, was born in Weisenberg township, March 26, 1862. When seven years old his parents moved to Allentown and he re- ceived his education in the public schools. At the age of fifteen years he became an apprentice to the trade of cigar maker and after finishing

his apprenticeship he followed the trade as a journeyman for a time until 1883 then engaged in the manufacture of cigars and also in the busi- ness of selling cigars at retail as well as whole- sale at No. 939 Hamilton street, where he has continued until the present time. He is a mem- ber of Castle No. 55, K. G. E., at Allentown.


In 1882 Mr. Werley was married to Ida S. C. Roth, daughter of Hon. Jeremiah Roth, and Angelina, his wife, nee Mink, and they had a son, Harvey J. She died in 1886 and was buried in the West End cemetery.


In 1893 Mr. Werley married Emma R. Hill and they have two children: Arthur and Mar- guerite.


HARVEY J. WERLEY, engaged extensively in the real estate business at Allentown, was born in the city on Jan. 8, 1883. He was educated in the public schools and the Allentown Business College, and when his grandfather, the Hon. Jeremiah Roth, was serving this district as a member of the legislature, for three terms, he filled the position of page for him. He followed the business of a wholesale tobacco dealer from 1904 to 1908, then embarked in the business of buying and selling real estate which he has since carried on in a successful manner, his office being at No. 939 Hamilton street. In politics he is a Democrat. He is a member of the Lehigh County Historical Society. In 1905 Mr. Werley was married to Florence M. Leidy, daughter of Wil- liam and Mary (Frick) Leidy, and they have one child, Carleton H. They are members of the St. Michael's Lutheran church.


Dewald Werley, son of John Nicholas, was a farmer of Weisenberg township. He was mar- ried to Molly Bittner, and they were members of the Lutheran Church. They had twelve. chil- dren : Rebecca, married Nathan Krum; Polly, married David Heilman, she died in 1911, aged 92 years; Daniel; Jacob; Kate, married Philip German; John; Julia, married Henry German ; Sallie, married Reuben Krause; Lucy, married (1) Phaon Rabenold, and (2) David Hollen- bach; Levi and Mary died single and a daughter died in infancy.


John Werley, third son of Dewald, residing at Friedensville in Washington township, was born Dec. 9, 1826, in Weisenberg township. He worked for his father a number of years on the homestead, and then for a time carried on farm- ing at Claussville. He was married to Sarah Muthard, daughter of Abraham, of Lowhill. They had four children: Harrison; Rosa; Em- ma, and Alia. She died May 10, 1865. He married, as his second wife, Sallie Wehr, and they had two children: Lewis and Ida. In his


extreme age, in good health, he lives with his daughter.


Stephen Werley, eldest son of Sebastian, who was a son of John Nicholas, resided in Heidel- berg township, on the farm which is now owned by his son, Edwin W. He was born at Werley's Corner. During his early active life he fol- lowed carpentering but afterward carried on farming on the Ebert homestead. He was mar- ried to Fietta Ebert, daughter of Daniel and Rebecca (Krum) Ebert, of the same township, and they had seven children : Lewis; Sarah, mar- ried Calvin Snyder ; James ; Ella, married Oliver Handwerk: and three Osville. Edwin W. and Tilghman, died small. They were Lutheran members of the Heidelberg church, and he served the congregation as deacon, elder, and trustee. In politics Mr. Werley was a Democrat. After his marriage he moved to the Ebert homestead and the two adjoining farms of his father-in- law near Pleasant Corner, became his proper- ties.


Edwin W. Werley, son of Stephen, farmer near Pleasant Corner, in Heidelberg township, was born on the Ebert homestead, March II, 1871. He was reared to farming and he follow- ed this avocation with his father until he be- came of age. In 1894 he began farming there for himself and at his father's decease he pur- chased the farm of seventy-four acres and in 1910 he also secured the Ebert homestead adjoin- ing it, containing sixty-eight acres. The build- ings on each farm are good and substantial. In politics he is a Democrat, and besides filling township offices he has served four years as com- mitteeman of the district.


In 1896 Mr. Werley was married to Alvesta Lauchnor, daughter of Aaron and Alice (Schleicher) Lauchnor, of Lehigh Furnace, and they had six children: Warren; Earl; Goldie ; Dorothea; Stephen, and Alvesta (the last two having died young.


Abraham Werley, second son of Dewald, who was the third son of Sebastian, was a native of Weisenberg township and lived between Sei- berlingsville and New Smithville, where he fol- lowed farming. He was born Oct. 28, 1794, died Nov. 28, 1888, aged 94 years and 25 days. He was married to Lovina Boger, born June 23, 18II and died Feb. 20, 1901, in her 90th year. They had nine children: Jane, married Isaac Dietrich, of Allentown, now deceased.

members of the Lutheran congregation of Sei- berling's church, where he was buried.


AARON A. WERLEY, son of Abraham, proprie- tor of the Slatedale Hotel, was born in Weisen- berg township on the homestead, Nov. 19, 1857, and reared on the farm. When he reached the age of fourteen years, he became a clerk in the store of his brother-in-law, Isaac Dietrich, at Sweitzer, and there Dietrich continued for nearly twenty years, until 1893, when he engaged in the hotel business at Deibert's for three years and in November, 1896, Mr. Werley purchased the Slatedale Hotel, and locating there, he has since carried it on in a successful manner. It is the principal public place in the town and con- tains eighteen rooms for the accommodation of its patrons. He is a Republican, and a member of the Camp P. O. S. of A., at Saegersville.


In 1885, Mr. Werley was married to Louisa Mohr, daughter of Samuel and Agnes (Rau) Mohr, of Lowhill township, and they have a son, Elmer A., married Carrie German, who have a son, named Clark, and he is assisting his father in conducting the hotel.


Elias Werley, the third son of Sebastian and Lydia, was born April 25, 1836, in Weisenberg township, reared on a farm and lived all of his life at Werley's Corner. He received his edu- cation in the public schools and assisted his fa- ther on the farm for a time and afterward con- ducted a store and hotel. He was an active Democrat in politics and served as a school di- rector for a number of terms. In 1859 he was married by Rev. Jeremiah Schindel to Leanna, daughter of Nathan and Catharine (Krause) Peter, of Heidelberg township, and they had three children: Oscar P .; Eugene Milton, died in childhood; and Harvey E., died in 1909, aged 35 years, had married Sevilla Weiss, daughter of Jonathan and Caroline (Werley) Weiss. They were Lutheran members of the Weisen- berg church, which he served as deacon and elder. In 1909 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their son, Harvey E., who died shortly afterward.


OSCAR P. WERLEY, proprietor of Werley's Hotel, at Egypt, and former clerk of quarter sessions, son of Elias, who was the son of Se- bastian, was born at Werley's Corner June 13, 1862, and educated in the local schools and Blackman's Business College. He then assisted as a clerk in his father's store until 1882 when he purchased the business and carried it on for himself twenty-two years. In 1904 he purchased the Long Hotel, the leading public stand at Egypt, with twenty-four rooms to accommodate the trade, and he has since carried on the busi- ness in a successful manner. In politics he has


been an active Democrat. He served the office of justice of the peace for ten years, clerk of the quarter sessions for three years, and direc- tor of the Berks and Lehigh Fire Insurance Co., for five years; and as a county delegate to the Democratic state conventions. He is a member of the P. O. S. of A .; I. O. O. F .; K. G. E .; and the Red Men.


In 1883, Mr. Werley was married to Per- nima A., a daughter of Joseph and Lucy ( Mos- er) Clauss, and they had six children: Fred- erick, who died in childhood; Lillian, married John George; Mabel; Robert; Pearle; Richard.


Harvey E. Werley, was born in Weisenberg and educated in the local school and at Dor- ney's Business College. He assisted his brother, Oscar, in the store, and afterward conducted the hotel at Werley's Corner. In 1903 he purchased the hotel stand at East Greenville, in Montgom- ery county, and carried it on until he died in 1909. He served as organist at the Seiberling church, where he was a member and filled the position of superintendent of the Sunday school for many years. He was a member of the P. O. S. of A., and acted as secretary of the camp at Werley's Corner. He was married to a daughter of Joseph Weiss who now resides at Schnecksville.


Owen G. Werley, son of Gideon and grandson of Andreas, was born in Weisenberg township, April 30, 1840. He followed farming in con- nection with his trade as shoemaker in Weisen- berg, where he lived until 1874, then removed to Lowhill, near Sweitzer, P. O., and there he has lived ever since. He has served as school director and supervisor of Lowhill for a number of years. He was married to Sarah A. Seibert, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Hart- man) Seibert. She was born Sept. 1, 1843, and they had the following children: Franklin Gid- eon; and Aaron Benjamin, twins. The latter is farming his father's homestead. He married Emma Ihrie and they have: Jennis, deceased ; Clara, and Stella.


FRANK G. WERLEY, county commissioner of Lehigh county and merchant at Allentown, was born in Weisenberg township, near Lynnville, March 16, 1867, a son of Owen G. and Sarah A., (Seibert ) Werley. He moved to Lowhill in 1874, with his parents, worked on the farm and attended public school at the Water Pond schoolhouse, near Pleasant Corner. On March 26, 1885, when eighteen years of age, he entered the employ of Penrose George, at Ashfield, Car- bon county, as a clerk in a general store; a year afterward the store of John Heintzelman, at Jordan Valley, but later in Lyon Valley, in the

same line of business; and a year later the store of David A. Bittner & Co., at Pleasant Corner, where he had charge of the store and postoffice for six years. He was elected and served one term as auditor of Heidelberg township. He came to Allentown in 1891, and entered the store of H. A. Stillwagen & Co., Centre Square, as salesman, and this position he filled creditably for thirteen years.


He has served the office with marked ability and is a faithful public servant.


He is affiliated with the following organiza- tions: Jordan Lodge, No. 673, F. & A. M .; Central Lodge, No. 636, I. O. O. On Feb. 2, 1904 he bought the grocery store of Schuler Bros., corner Seventh and Gordon streets, and where he continued in business up to May 22, 1914, when he sold out to devote all his time to his office as county commissioner. In the fall of 1911 Mr. Werley was elected a county commissioner on the Republican ticket.

ler) Bittner, and they had one child, Clayton O. F., married to Edna I. Bachman, a daugh- ter of George and Maggie (Werley) Bachman. They have one daughter, Beatrice Bachman Werley. Mr. Werley is a music teacher and the organist of St. Luke's Lutheran church, Al- lentown, since 1913. Mrs. Werley died June 16, 1890, aged 20 years and 27 days, and was buried at the Weisenberg church. On Aug. 20, 1894 he married as his second wife, Minnie C. George, daughter of Alfred and Melissa (Bil- heimer) George, and they have one child, Fred- erick H., a draughtsman at Allentown.


Mr. Werley, after coming to Allentown, be- came a member of the St. Michael's Lutheran church, which he served in the consistory for three years, but in 1902 he and family became members of St. Luke's Lutheran church, on North Seventh street, and this church he has served as a deacon continually since 1905.


WILLIAM F. WERLEY, son of Michael, is a farmer of Weisenberg township, was born Aug. 19, 1853, and brought up in the township on a farm. He was educated in the local school and also in the Palatinate College and Muhlenberg College, until he became seventeen years of age. He then passed the teachers' examination and upon receiving a certificate he began teaching pub- lic school, and taught for twenty-three years, (ten terms in Weisenberg, ten in Upper Macungie, and three in Lowhill). While teaching, he helped his father in the farming operations in the summer and fall until 1881 when he married. He was engaged in the store business at Ziegel's church for eighteen years until 1911, when he purchased the farm of twenty-five acres, where he now re- sides and this he has carried on till now.
