PROVO.
Nestling close to the beautiful Wasatch mountains, on an alluvial plain made by Provo river, is situated the City of Provo, the county seat of Utah county.
Provo has long been distinguished as the Garden City of the State, and well is it deserving of the distinction, because of the rich soil which it possesses.
Provo is eminently a residence town, situated as it is, only 48 miles from the capital of the State, and blessed with splendid railroad facilities, being a central point for the Denver & Rio Grande, Los

It has a splendid electric light system, good water system and first-class police regulations. Its population is 11,000, and it is today one of the great commercial centers of our commonwealth.
Many important manufacturing institu- tions are now in operation within the city and the work of the early builders is plain- ly marked in the development of today. Manufacturing in a small way began when the, pioneers first settled at this place.
The Brigham Young University, a promi- ment educational institution of the Mor- Inon church, is Provo's educational pride, and is an honor to the State. Its average yearly attendance is 1,500 students. The courses given are the high school, com- mercial and collegiate.
The State Mental Hospital is also located at Provo. Provo may justly boast of her great advantages in water power, and in- deed, were the waters of Provo river har- nessed and placed in operation, it would furnish sufficient power to turn all the wheels of machinery in the State. The Utah Power & Light Co. has erected a plant at the mouth of Provo canyon of 10,000 horse power; fully utilized.
Aside from these more important in- dustries in Provo City, are numerous busi- ness houses that are in a flourishing con- dition.
The revenues of the postoffice of Provo have reached a point to justify the govern- ment in establishing a free delivery, to- gether with four rural postal routes, so that the best mail service that is found in any city is in force in Provo.
Aside from the Brigham Young Univer- sity, there is a public school system that is second to none in the State, there being five modern school buildings within the city. The Procter Academy is also a flourishing school of the Congregational church.
A splendid sewer system has within the last few years been laid in the city, and many modern residence places which use this system has recently been built.
The streets are kept clean and are beau- tified by elegant shade trees on either side and there now exists twenty miles of paved sidewalks. Two of the most attractive boulevards to be found within the inter- mountain region have been built in Provo, one extends for distance of nine miles, having a river front of three miles and a lake front of two and a half miles, the other running to Olmstead in Provo canyon. Utah Lake within a few miles is a beau- tiful body of fresh water extending from Lehi on the north to Spanish Fork on the south, in Utah county, a distance of thirty miles, having an average width of twelve miles. Quite an extensive fishing industry is conducted on this lake.
Only a short run of ten miles over the Rio Grande carries the tourist from the Garden City to the beautiful Provo Canyon,
where the scenery cannot be excelled and trout fishing is unequalled.
