The name "Salt Lake City", suggests to- day to any cosmopolite visions of a beau- tiful fairyland with a sort of mysterious charm attached to its history and its peo- ple. For there is no other place in all the world that has proved so fascinating, so magnetic to the traveler as has this city, nestling on the shores of the Dead Sea of America.
People from the four corners of the earth come here only to be overwhelmed with the kaleidoscopic view of the sur- roundings, the freshness and the freedom which the very atmosphere inspires.
With the towering Wasatch Mountains to the east, shielding the valley from the invasion of destructive prairie winds, and with the placid waters of the briny Great Salt Lake shimmering in the west, this city is stretching its arms into the fertile broad valley about it-a picture of rare loveliness.
And the people! They represent the fin- est type of the West, with its character- istic virility. The hand clasp is signifi- cant. It bespeaks the rugged honesty of pioneer life, the battle with rude elemen- tary conditions, unknown to the effete cen- ters, teeming with congested humanity. And how substantially these clear-eyed,
brave sons of toil have built is evidenced on every side. Initiative and resourceful- ness enter into the very structure of the native citizens of this inland empire. The great international irrigation system had its beginning in this city. When a tiny stream diverted from its time honored course was made to trickle down a furrow of parched vegetation it heralded the be- ginning of one of the greatest reclamation projects in the world. Scarcely had the hardy pioneers of 1847, under the leader- ship of that masterful Brigham Young, de- cided upon this barren waste as their fu- ture abode when they began to build for permanency and beauty.
A tour of the city impresses one with the success that has attended their efforts. It is not commonly known that the first department store in the world, Zion's Co- operative Mercantile Institution, was es- tablished in Salt Lake City, and has since grown to be one of the biggest institutions of its kind in western America.
Who has not heard of the famous Mor- mon Temple and Tabernacle, both situated in Salt Lake City ?
Forty years in building, the Temple rep- resents the struggle and toil of that little band of early settlers whose religious thought impelled them to the erection of this remarkable edifice. The cumbersome methods of transportation and construction work did not deter them in their ambitious project. And when, it was crowned with the gilded statue, trumpet in hand, tens of thousands of devotees of the dominant church raised their voices in a glorious "Hallelujah."
The stranger within our gates marvels at the Tabernacle with its umbrella roof and its perfect acoustics. And he asks if this wonder is the result of accident or design. This building too, stands, as an- other monument of the daring of the early builders. The streets of Salt Lake, broad and straight, flooded with sunshine, chal- lenge the admiration of the easterner who has dwelt among the cavernous walls of city sky-scrapers. Running water and shaded sidewalks are unique features pecu- liar to Salt Lake City. Stand if you will,

at the base of the imposing Wasatch Moun- tains, some early morning and look at the city below. There, almost hidden in dense foliage of well selected trees, tops of busi- ness blocks, spires of substantial cathe- drals and church edifices, or the gables of pretty residences, protrude, only to inten- sify the beauty of the placid scene.
Uncle Sam, himself, appreciated, the beauty of the location when he established Fort Douglas, just to the east of the city. The latest acquisition of Salt Lake's list of pretentious buildings is the State Capi- tol, in part almost a replica of the Wash- ington structure. Enter if you will from the north, south, east, or west, and this imposing building bursts upon your view. It is the embodiment of the beautiful and substantial in architecture.
Salt Lake City is today known as a con- vention Mecca. Probably no other factor has contributed more to bring vast organi- zations here than has the Hotel Utah. This pile of white masonry towers in the very shadows of the Mormon Temple. The Hotel Newhouse, and the Wall Street of Salt Lake, made up of two inspiring structures give a metropolitan touch to lower Main Street.
But Salt Lake City is not merely artisic: It is aggressively commercial. The busi- ness men of this section are carving an enviable name for Salt Lake City. Manu- facturing industries are adding vast wealth to its citizens; the copper mines and smelt- ers, immediately to the west, rank among the greatest in the world. Agriculture has reached a highly intensive stage, so the vast amount of products demanded by the mills and factories are garnered from the fields and farms stretching out from this city. Dairying and poultry raising are proving lucrative lines of industry on ac- count of the ready markets afforded.
In bank circles, Salt Lake is rated as A 1. So great has the commercial value of this city become that the establishment of a Federal Reserve Bank is now contemplated and practically assured.
Commercial and industrial organizations have their centers in Salt Lake. The Salt Lake Commercial Club is a veritable hive of industry in the interests of its citizens, and the Manufacturers' Association of Utah is untiring in its efforts to stimulate and encourage industrial growth in the State.
As to education, Salt Lake is not out- ranked. The State University of Utah, and the City schools are among the highest accredited educational institutions in Amer- ica. And in Salt Lake City, people of all religious persuasions worship freely, and in business they know no distinction.
Salt Lake City has entered upon an era of unprecedented growth and prosperity. The wealth of the world is being attracted here by the unlimited opportunities which this commonwealth affords. "One Million inhabitants", occupying the entire Salt Lake Valley which now radiates from this city is the new slogan and the ambition of the "City of the Saints."
