HUGUENOT EMIGRATION TO VIRGINIA.

INHABITANTS OF KING WILLIAM PARISH, IN MANACAN TOWN, VIRGINIA, TO MR. NEARNE.107

[Extract.]

4TH JULY, 1728.

Rev'd Sir :

Your near departure out of this country obliges us, the Church Wardens and Vestries of King William's Parish, with humble submission, to beg your Assistance when, please God, you are arrived in London. We are very sorry that we can no longer enjoy the pleasure of your good presence and Education.

We thought ourselves happy in our late settlement with your Reverence.

We had above 110 or 120 tithables, but at present our num- ber is 130. You see, therefore, the impossibility for us to raise a sum sufficient to keep our own Minister, and since we are con- formed to the Laws and Disciplines of the Church of England, and that our Parish is a Royal Gift to us French Refugees, we think we ought not to consent to be dissolved and incorporated into another Parish.

Many of our Parishioners understand no English; but for the sake of our Children and the English Families settled amongst us, we should be heartily Glad to have the Common Prayers and Sermons in English as well as French.

APPENDIX OF GENEALOGIES.

A PARTIAL LIST OF THE DESCENDANTS

OF

JOHN DE LA FONTAINE,"

PRESENTING DATA OF THE FONTAINE, MAURY, AND OTHER FAMILY NAMES.

John de la Fontaine, of noble origin,' was born in the Province of Maine, near its borders, about the year 1500. He received at an early age a commission in the house- hold of Francis I, in what was then called " Les Ordon- nances du Roi," a command which he retained with honor through the succeeding reigns of Henry II, Francis II, and until the second year of that of Charles IX, when he voluntarily resigned. He had desired to retire to private life at an earlier period, but had remained in the royal service as a safeguard against religious persecution, having with his father embraced Protestantism about the year 1535. He had married and had had born to him four or more sons. Under the Edict of Pacification of January 17th, 1561 [1562], he was deluded into retiring to his paternal estates in Maine. He, his wife and eldest son were martyred there, in 1563. º
