(Carter) Knight, a direct descendant in the third generation of George Walton, signer of the Declaration of Independence; graduated in law from William and Mary College; member of Virginia Senate 1857-'60 ; has been prominently connected with the agricultural and manufacturing inter- ests of Virginia (having been successively Secretary and President of the State Agricultural Society), and is now the editor of the Southern Planter and Farmer. The name Knight is of early seating in Virginia. Peter Knight patented land in New Norfolk county, March 18, 1638. Peter Knight, probably the same, was the Burgess from Northumberland county in March, 1658. There are grants of land of record in the State Registry, aggregating more than 25,000 acres in Norfolk, Isle of Wight, James City, and Gloucester counties, to Peter, Joseph, Edward, John, William, and Guy Knight, during the period 1638, 1675.
