JAMES P. and M. M. (CHASTAIN) COCKE.


It is held by tradition in the well-known Cocke family of the southern and western parts of the United States that its propositus in Virginia was Richard 1 Cocke, who emigrated from Leeds, Yorkshire, England, some time prior to 1636, and settled in Hen- rico county, of which he was the representative in the House of Burgesses, 1644-1654. and some time County-Lieutenant. In virtue of the latter position he was designated Lieutenant-Colo- nel. His seat, " Malvern Hills," obtained celebrity during the late war between the States as the scene of a sanguinary contest. He m. - and left issue :
