senger, which wrought a revolution in the Navy Department and led to the establishment of the Naval Academy, the Memphis Navy-Yard, and the general warehousing system. He had also the special thanks of the State of Illinois for his papers on the enlargement of the Illinois and Michigan Canal. In 1842 he was made Superintendent of the Depot of Charts and Instruments in Washington, which, under his inspiration, became the National Observatory. Here he made his re- nowned current charts and sailing directions, and wrote his "Physical Geography of the Sea," pronounced by Humboldt a new science. Here he suggested the conference of maritime nations at Brussels, to secure co-operation in observation and researches at sea. In recognition of his eminent services in the cause of science the leading Powers of Europe showered honors and decorations on him. Presi- dent Tyler wished to put him at the head of the Navy Department. and though but a young Lieutenant the position of Chief Hydrographer of the Southern Exploring Expedition was offered him He was the first to advocate the little ship and big gun theory, so verified by experience in the late war, and also the substitution of open batteries and earth- works for casemated forts. The French Emperor, upon his advice, determined that it was inexpedient to undertake the Nicaraugua Ship Canal. The Academies of Science of Paris, Berlin, Brussels and St. Petersburg conferred membership on him, as did Cambridge (England) the degree of LL.D. When Virginia seceded from the Union he offered her his services, and was made a Captain and a member of the Advisory Council, the first act of which body was the recommendation of R. E. Lee as Commander of the Army of Virginia.
When it was known in Europe that Captain Maury had left the United States Navy, France and Russia invited him to become their guest, with every provision for his comfort and studies. He replied that his first duty was to Virginia. He gave much attention to elec- trical torpedoes in the beginning of the war, and had the Confederary have had the means to carry out his plans it is probable that no South- ern port might have been entered by the enemy. When in London, after the war, he instructed committees of the armies and navies of Continental Governments in this formidable mode of defence. In 1862 he was sent on a special mission to England, where he remained until 1865. He was then persuaded by Napoleon and Maximilian to make his home in Mexico, and was appointed Honorary Counsellor of State, a member of the Cabinet, and Imperial Commissioner of Emigration. Before the death of Maximilian he was sent on a special mission to

Europe, where he remained until 1868, preparing his School Geogra- phies. Being elected Professor of Physics at the Virginia Military Institute, he declined the charge of the Imperial Observatory at Paris, and returned to Virginia, where he devoted himself chiefly to the study of the resources of Virginia and to perfecting a combined system of crop reports and weather forecasts, for the benefit of the farmer, as his combined observations at sea had been for the benefit of the sailor. These weather forecasts, now so famous, were urged by Maury upon public consideration in 1854. He died at Lexington, Va., February I, 1873, his last words being " All is well."
j The sister of a singularly meritorious brotherhood. Captain Wm. Lewis Herndon, the explorer of the Amazon river, heroically went down with the ill-fated steamer "Central America," of which he was the commander, September 12, 1857, in the Gulf Stream, after having seen every passenger transferred from the decks of the sinking ship and saved; Dr. Dabney Herndon died a martyr to duty in the yellow- fever visitation of Mobile, Ala .; Dr. John Minor Herndon, Judge of the Hustings Court of Fredericksburg and Secretary of the Common- wealth, 1865-'67-died September 19, 1871, in the 64th year of his age ; Charles Herndon, a lawyer of ability and member of the Virginia Senate, died at Fredericksburg, Va., December 17, 1883, aged 61 years; Dr. Brodie Strachan Herndon, a learned and beloved physician of Savannah, Ga., survives. A nephew of these brothers, Dr. James Carmichael Herndon, died at the post of duty at Fernandina, Fla., of yellow-fever, October 18, 1877.
William Herndon, the ancestor (probably) of this family, patented large tracts of land in St. Stephen's parish, New Kent county, Va., in February, 1673 [1674].

acres, and five shillings quit-rent. A great number of Palatines and fifteen hundred Swiss followed the Baron and settled at the confluence of the Trent and the Neuse. The town was called New Berne, after Berne, in Switzerland, the birth-place of the Baron. But the settlers were so disheartened by the Indian ravages in September, 1711, in which more than sixty of them were massacred, that De Graffenreidt sold his landed interests to Thomas Pollock for {Soo and removed to Virginia. Many of his followers were employed by Governor Spots wood in his iron-works, inaugurated at Germanna in 1714. The follow- ing grants of land are of record in the Virginia Land Registry Office : Christopher De Graffenreidt, "Gent.," of Prince George county, 1,845 acres in Brunswick county, February 27, 1734, Book No. 5, p. 462; Tscharner De Graffenreidt, 414 acres in Brunswick county, November 25, 1743, Book No. 20, p. 596. In the Virginia Gazette of October 31, 1739, a Mrs. De Graffenreidt announces an entertainment to be given at 'her house in Williamsburg, Va.
