A PARTIAL LIST OF THE DESCENDANTS
OF
BARTHOLOMEW DUPUY,
PRESENTING DATA OF THE DUPUY, TRABUE, AND OTHER FAMILY NAMES.
"Dupuy, or Du Puy, is a very ancient French name. It is composed of two words-' Du,' meaning 'of the,' and 'Puy' (old French), meaning 'mountain.'
"In the first crusade Hugues Du Puy, a French Knight, and his sons, Adolph, Romain and Raymond, accompanied Gode- froy de Bouillon to Palestine.
"About the year 1113, Raymond Du Puy founded and was the first Grand Master of the military order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, afterwards styled the Knights of Malta. This and a kindred order, the Knights Templar, organized a few years later, acquired great wealth and wielded great mili- tary power for several centuries.
"According to the custom of the age of chivalry, Raymond
a Two pictorial "trees" of the "Dupuy Family," "prepared with great care," severally, in 1852, by Mrs. Eliza M. Ratcliffe, Louisville, Ky., and in 1861 by Mrs. Martha J. Stovall, Memphis, Tenn., form the basis of this deduction. Although every effort has been made by the Editor towards accuracy. in data gathered during many years past and by every reference at his command, he is fearful that this compilation contains many errors ; but as the whole matter is clearly presented, it is to be hoped that those immediately interested will endeavor due correction. He gratefully acknowledges essential aid rendered him in his somewhat difficult and embarrassing task by C. L. C. Dupuy, Esq., New Orleans, La .; W. M. Bridges, Esq., and Colonel W. C. Knight, Rich- mond, Va., and Dr. J. J. Dupuy, Davidson College, North Carolina.

Du Puy quartered his own arms-a red lion, with blue tongue and claws, rampant on a field of gold-with the arms of the Knights of St. John-a broad white cross of eight points on a field of red.
"In later years, the Dupuy family were among those who were identified with the reformed religion of France, and who were called Huguenots, a term of reproach, meaning confederates or leaguers.
"Bartholomew Dupuy, the immediate progenitor of the Vir- ginia family, entered the army at the age of eighteen and served fourteen years.
"Becoming an officer of the guards of the King, Louis IV, he was frequently charged with the performance of duties of such importance that his orders bore the signature and seal of the King himself. The possession of one of these orders aided him subsequently in effecting his escape from France.
"Shortly before the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which was immediately followed by the memorable persecutions which drove from France all Huguenots who were so fortunate as to escape the galleys or death, he had married the Countess Susanne Lavillon, also a Huguenot, and had retired to his coun- try seat. Here he was soon waited upon by a priest, who announced that the Edict would soon be revoked, and that the King, from motives of esteem, desired him to abjure his creed and avoid the fate which awaited all heretics ; and he was also informed that compliance would be rewarded by preferment at the hands of the King. Soon afterwards he was visited by a detachment of soldiery and the parish priest, who demanded his abjuration upon penalty of arrest and its well-known conse- quences. He was allowed a few hours in which to make known his decision.
"The Huguenots were powerless to defend themselves, and submission to persecution could accomplish no practical good. He, therefore, wisely availed himself of the short respite to make hurried arrangements for flight into Protestant Germany.
"In the dead of night, and mounted upon picked horses, he and his young wife commenced their perilous ride of eighteen days to the frontier; he attired in his best uniform and wearing the sword which had done him and his ancestors good service on many fields of battle, and she disguised as his attendant, or

page, and clad in a suit which had been hastily made by the village tailor. They were provided with such money and valu- ables only as could be concealed upon their persons.
"Their flight was soon discovered, and dragoons were sent to capture them ; but the troopers were not as well mounted, and were compelled to abandon the pursuit, not, however, until one or two of the best mounted had come so near as to oblige Dupuy to turn and make good use of his sword.
"As they approached the frontier they were frequently halted and interrogated by troops who had been stationed on the various roads to intercept fugitives. His uniform, however, was deemed sufficient passport, and, with occasional comments upon the beauty and feminine appearance of his page, per- mission was accorded to pass on. At the outposts, however, a very vigilant officer demanded his warrant for passing. Hold- ing out with one hand a document so opened as to display the signature and seal of the King, and quickly drawing his sword with the other, he dernanded of the astonished officer an apology for the interruption, and coolly required him to furnish him an escort to the boundary.
"The frontier was soon reached and the escort dismissed.
"His sword was long treasured as an heirloom by his de- scendants; but, during a raid of Federal troops near Peters- burg, was lost in the burning of the residence of Mrs. Julian Ruffin, in whose charge it had been left by its last owner, Dr. John J. Dupuy, now of Davidson College, North Carolina.
"Dr. Dupuy served the 'Lost Cause' in the cavalry, and was therefore obliged to wear a sword of modern pattern. It was worn, however, in the Revolutionary War by Captain James Dupuy, of Nottoway county, a grandson of the old Huguenot, who, with his brothers, Captain John Dupuy and Lieutenant Peter Dupuy, served in the same regiment of Virginia infantry. It was of a pattern now obsolete; the blade was straight and three-sided throughout its length, like the modern bayonet ; at the guard it was very stout, but it rapidly diminished in thick - ness for about eight inches, when it became comparatively slender. This construction combined perfect poise with light- ness and great strength, and made the weapon very effective in the hands of a skilled swordsman.
"Bartholomew Dupuy and his wife resided about fourteen

years in Germany and about two years in England, whence, in the year 1700, they came to Virginia, and settled in King Wil- liam parish, on James river, above Richmond, upon lands granted to Huguenot refugees, and which were once occupied by the Monacan Indians, a warlike tribe, which had withstood the power of Powhatan, but which disappeared before the whites.
"The old Huguenot and his faithful wife lived many years in their new home, and their memory is cherished with just pride by a posterity whose name is 'legion,' and who are found to-day not only in Virginia, but also in Kentucky, Ten- nessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Missouri, and other States of the Republic."
